Practicing For the Gather Att: Any

Jerzy Tobin

The Midsummer Gather was coming; it was the main topic of
conversations everywhere that Raelah went. And rightfully so, given
how much of a major event it was. For Raelah, it was her biggest
opportunity to make marks to last her for the rest of the turn. Sure,
she was in the Weyr now, and she had everything she needed provided
for her, but extra luxuries were up to her to get, and there was
always saving for a rainy day, so it was in Raelah's best interest to
practice her skills when she could, so that she didn't get rusty. Not
to mention that practicing out where she could be seen would help drum
up business later, right?

She had chosen a spot down by the lake that was, for the most part,
clear of obstruction. She didn't want to trip over anything, or
anyone. She dropped the bundle of props she'd been carrying, setting
out each of the items in little groups based on what they were.
Balls, rings, a special set of weighted knives, and the diabolo that
was her main showpiece. To warm up, Raelah started with the balls,
tossing them from hand to hand, first in a simple pattern, and then
getting into more complex sets. She'd move on to the rings next, and
then the knives. Only when she was fully warmed up would she start
practicing her actual routine with the diabolo.

In her peripheral vision she could see people gathering to watch, some
pausing for only a moment, while others stood there fully attentive.
Raelah noted them, but kept her concentration on what she was doing.
She had moved onto the knives, and that was not the sort of thing you
could give anything less than your full attention to, unless you were
looking to get hurt.

Sengroth was in a bad mood, his front claws were in the lake and his Human was mentally pushing to get the rest of him into the lake.  He turned his head intending to glare at his rider and at the cleaning supplies Kl'ryn carried, but something off to the side caught his attention.  {{YER lookin' the WRON' way.  YE'D find the POINTIES more important!}}  The brown countered digging his claws stubbornly into the sand beneath him now that he'd seen something that'd get him out of the water.

Kl'ryn huffed mentally.  [[I'm looking very much....what?]]  His comment cut off at the image his brown sent him of the girl and the knives, an image that looked too real to be another attempt for the brown to get out of being bathed.  Turning, he looked around until his gaze fell onto the Candidate, juggling the knives that Sengroth had informed him about.

One..two..three..four - twist..two..three..four... Raelah kept count
in her head as she spun and tossed the knives up and caught them
before flipping them up again, adding a few spins and twists of her
body to add variation to the routine. In the solo acts she had to be
a bit flashier with her movements to add zest to the show; when she
was doing this with her mother they could add a few more tricks to add
a greater illusion of danger to the routine. But solo shows were
where Raelah earned money for herself, and not just for the circus as
a whole, though they'd get a small cut for the use of the tents and
the musician that would play while she was working.

With a final flip of her wrists, Raelah caught the three knives, and
bowed to the people she had seen watching her. She was pleased to see
that even one of the riders and his dragon were watching her. Who
knew, maybe someone would want to hire her for entertainment here at
the Weyr for a party or something.

Kl'ryn set the bucket down and moved toward the Candidate once she finished juggling.

Feeling his Rider move, Sengroth moved, placing his feet down practically trying to tiptoe away from the water.  As stealth as you'd imagine a giant brown lump would be and Kl'ryn snapped around leveling one finger toward the brown.  "No!"  He said then moved his hand pointing toward the water before he turned back in Raelah's direction.

For a moment, Raelah had thought that the rider approaching her was
shouting 'No' at her, but apparently it was to his dragon, which had
comically been trying to sneak away. She had never heard of a dragon
that didn't like the water before; all the ones she had met had been
pretty enthusiastic about the stuff.

"Good evening, Sir," Raelah greeted the man once he was within range.
"Can I help you?"

"Not sure whether I'd call it help, more curiosity.  I don't get to see Candidates down here juggling all that often.  "  Kl'ryn explained carefully thinking about how exactly he should phrase his question.  "Even fewer that actually juggle knives.  Do you do that often?"

Oh? Oh! He was probably worried she was going to hurt someone, or
else herself. And that was fair, Raelah guessed. Seeing someone
juggling knives out of the blue would probably give thoughts like that
to anyone with a lick of brains.

"Its my livelihood, actually, Sir," Raelah said with a sincere smile.
"My family's circus folk. Been doin' stuff like this since I could
toddle. Knives're to draw in the crowd, mostly. Get 'em worked up
for the actual show."

Circus folk?  Kl'ryn figured that meant they'd been around the Gathers and Kl'ryn had taken his daughters to see shows at the Gather before.  Not at every Gather, and apparently not whichever group Raelah was from.  "If they're just to draw a crowd, what else is at the actual show?"  He asked.

Sengroth glanced over at the chatting pair, making sure his rider was definitely focused on the Candidate.  Seeing he was the brown's gaze turned toward the bucket his rider had left behind.
