Hatching - Dark Beginnings (Set up post) #HatchingForeth2020

The rain had been coming down for days. With the holes from the explosion, there were places for the rain to come in and puddles had formed in the Lower Caverns. Some significantly big, but there was nothing to do about it. Foreth and the gold eggs remained nice and dry, but the sires and eggs (the ones that remained) were not. Early that morning Foreth had asked the sires to move off the eggs just in case as she sensed that Hatching was imminent, but surprisingly it wasn’t until after the Candidates were supposed to be in bed that she let out the first hum. The sound was soft at first, then grew louder and louder as the dragons nearby took up the sound. The ACMs, also many roused from their beds, rushed to get the Candidates ready at the surprise night time Hatching. As the Candidates were roused and rushed to put on their robes, people ran around looking for glows to add. No one could get onto the Sands to add to the walls, but there were enough around the Caverns that a good deal could be seen still. Due to the lateness of the Hatching, few people outside the Weyr would be able to come. There was no room in the Upper Caverns for anyone but an ACM and AWLM to watch and the Candidates anyway. With Kassia incapacitated, Foreth could do pretty much anything she wanted and she wanted only who she considered the best of the best to be presented to her gold eggs. She put out a call for each of the girls who had been allowed to come see the gold eggs, plus Shalia and Andreya. As they came in, Foreth looked over each girl and rejected or approved them as they came onto the Sands until she was satisfied. Meanwhile the Hatching was already starting in the gloomy dark.

At least one person was grateful to that dark. R'tal was quietly hoping that the dim light and the attention on the tiny dragons would mean no-one looked too closely at the sires and notice the eyepads they were wearing. ((Keep your head up, love.)) Up and further into the dark. ((I'll look for you anyway.)) ((I want to be able to smell them at least,)) Talith grumbled, but raised his head. ((And you're terrible at watching. You're too busy watching everything else.)) It was true, he was. All his attention kept shifting to 'what did we miss, what could happen'. Still he made an effort to look back at the Sands and stop watching the crowd. ((Thank you.))

One good thing about a late night, no-visitors hatching was that the

kitchen staff weren't all needed to get a feast ready. Oh, if people told Larissa that they wanted to go watch because of someone they knew on the sands, she was pretty good about arranging time for them to go. But Insaya had only taken advantage of that once, maybe twice since she'd been in the kitchens. Most of the time she was happy enough to just listen in and report who impressed to the rest of the kitchen. This time though, she wasn't needed. So she broke into as quick a run as she could manage to get to the Sands so that she could hopefully see her "little brother" impress.

Miacca almost flew into her Hatching Robes, not even taking off all her normal outfit until she'd gotten the Hatching Robes on. She had enough experience over the last 4 Turns to know how to do that without damaging the clothing, but the Hatching took the forefront of her attention. The eggs were hatching, another chance to Impress and take her place to eventually help out the Wings. So there was no chance for her to feel proud about her skill at changing into the robes. Even the rain couldn't cut through the silent chant going through her head. There certainly wasn't any reason to say that the Hatchlings are coming, everyone around her, everyone around the Weyr knew it. She certainly didn't get any call from Foreth either, she'd never gotten the chance to see the eggs in person before Namieh went out onto the Sands without permission. Like the male Candidates and the other females that Foreth didn't approve, she made her way to the Lower Caverns. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Member Name: MyaL Discord: Neffeyn#8723
