Hair today, gone tomorrow. (Attn: D'vik/Fabio- Calyse)

Alyx

Like normal D'vik was busy with duties of his own, and his flits had been left to fend for themselves. Normally this wasn't too much of an issue, as Elon was mostly able to keep Fabio out of trouble. He was a bronze too, and Callamere. But today, well today was another story in the long tales of Fabio's misadventures. Elon had been tempted by a lovely little green thing that had been flirting, then took to the skies, and Fabio had been left untended. This was a recipe for disaster.

Fabio was also bored, which upped the likelyhood of something bad happening to, or around him. So he went to visit the stockpile of firestone, there were always other flits there. Well...almost always. This time there was not one glimmer of hide there other than himself. So he sadly poked about for a bit munching a few pebbles mostly from boredom. Then when no fun was to be had there, he decided to pop between and go back to the candidates barracks. No one knew why he went there, when his person had his own weyr, maybe his earliest memories were clearer, maybe he just liked all the pretty girls. No one would ever know for sure.

As the lovely bronze arrived he saw a pretty girl with blonde hair, sitting on her cot, brushing it. The blonde reminded something in this flit's addled brain of a gold and he plopped down next to her uninvited, Curving his neck in a move more associated with chasing a pretty green or gold than sidling up to some strange girl. But that was Fabio for you.

Calyse drew the brush through her hair, wincing when a tangle caught the bristles. It was one of her few vanities, but wearing the long locks down meant that if she wasn't careful, the day's activities saw strands winding into tunnelsnake nests. Carefully tugging the tangle apart with her fingers, she flinched to notice something land beside her. Turning, her face lit up to spy a firelizard.

"Oh, hello." Her smile was kind and interested, curious about the flits she'd seen so frequently since arriving. The behavior he began to exhibit made her brows knit gently in confusion before a laugh bubbled out of her. "You're a handsome little fellow aren't you? Sorry, bronzey, you'll have to find someone else to chase."

Calyse made a shooing motion with one absent hand in an attempt to discourage his silly courting. "Go on, find your faire now."

Fabio seemed to have no inclination to be shooed. He sat there, absolutely entranced watching the brush going through her hair. He crooned happily watching, weaving back and forth slightly. Though for now he seemed content to do no more than watch as she brushed.

Though with Fabio that could, and likely would change in an instant. Handsome as the bronze was, he was covered in tiny scars from his misadventures and came complete with a, well slightly scorched collar, reading his own name of Fabio, and the name of his owner rider, D'vik.

"Hmm, let's see who you belong to, shall we?" Calyse thought aloud when it became clear the firelizard was not about to leave, setting her comb down on the bed at her side. "They don't have many of you where I'm from," she spoke companionably to him, though not entirely sure he could understand a word of it. "You'd be quite the big deal up north, shiny boy."

She reached a now free hand toward his collar, hoping to better read the inscription. "...Fabio? Is that your name? D'vik must be your person. Should we help you find him? Are you lost, boy?"

Fabio preened at the attention, and chittered happy noises at the girl with the pretty gold hair. He half spread his wings, obviously showing off what a fine example of bronze he was. He made a noise that was half croon, half burp, and had the grace to look slightly embarrassed. Of course what he did when embarrassed would prove to be rather a nightmare any minute now. He hid his face against her back, under the curtain of shining hair, his smooth moves all gone. He'd by this point forgotten all about the pebbles he'd munched a while ago and was confused as to why his belly hurt so bad.

A moment later it came to him that he needed to burp, really really bad. Since his moves had already been ruined by one burp, he tried so so hard to hide it, face completely covered by her hair, he let out a massive belch, which due to the firestone came out as a lovely fireball. Fire of course does not mix well with hair. Seconds later the smell was overpowering, and the burning hair was wrapped all around the stupid flit, who didn't think to move, and as the hair burned, so, too did Fabio. He squealed in pain and awkwardly flopped about on the bed, singed and piteous.

Watching as the flit began to tangle himself in her hair, a nagging sense of worry began to grow in Calyse's gut. "Alright now," she tried to coax him gently, cheek twitching with the patient smile that appeared on her face. Vainly, her hands pulled at the mess of her hair and flailing firelizard, but had made no real progress by the time his belch arrived.

Fire, as hot and startling as it was brief, erupted from the bronze. Calyse let loose a scream that echoed in the Candidate Barracks, tumbling head-over-heels backwards off her cot. The stench of burning hair reached her nose before she could register what had happened, and even as she righted herself, she was slapping at the ignited strands to smother them.

"No!" She shrieked, face scrunched and furious. "You little-- what have you done?!" She picked at the torched remains of her hair, asymmetric and coiled tightly where fire hadn't outright eaten it away. Her golden locks were easily half their original length, the awful odor lingering in the air. She would need a haircut, and that would make it shorter still! "My hair!" Calyse wailed, barely aware of Fabio's distress.

Fabio cheeped and squealed with his pain, and, well attempted appologies to the girl with now much shorter hair. Her hair had tightened and wrapped around him as it burned, leaving whiplike burn marks across his wings and back. Of course his collar, while slightly more singed than before, was still readable. After another moment Fabio slinked towards the end of the girl's bed, but as he spread his wings to try to fly, he got about half way before the pain was too much.

Unable to flee, Fabio was completely at the mercy of this strange person with the newly shortened hair, his many burns beginning to leak green ichor. If Fabio had understood what numbweed was he'd have been craving it with a passion. All he really knew is he wanted his person, and he wasn't here, and Fabio couldn't fly. He never even thought to Call his pet, or his Big Brother, Trometh. Hurting and stupidity didn't mix well.

All the anger and outrage that churned in her stomach at the damage suddenly felt sour when Calyse saw the state he was in. The shriveled, asymmetric lengths of her burned hair no longer seemed that important. Instead, dragonhealer instincts urged her to *do something* rather than let him suffer. So she swallowed her pride and took a deep, calming breath, counting to five in her head until the anger had faded.

"Aw, shards..." she said in resignation and sank down to her knees before the bed. "You really got yourself bad, didn't you? Hold still, let me pick you up. You're going to need some numbweed by the looks of it, but we should clean those burns first. I don't..." Calyse paused, looking around her shared sleeping space, "... think we've got any about here. Let's go to the Infirmary, shall we?" She bent down to scoop the bronze into her arms, demeanor starkly different now that she had changed to the comfortable dragonhealer's role.

Fabio simply chittered sadly. He hurt too much to think of much more to do. But he didn't squirm when picked up. On close examination, it was obvious that this was far from the first time he'd been hurt and tended to. At least he was calm and used to it by now. Of course, he was an idiot of a flit, and that calm could change at any moment.

Calyse carried the injured flit through the Barracks without wasting time, navigating to the Infirmary with practiced ease. This part of the Weyr, at least, she always knew how to find. The stink of her burned hair followed them, curling her upper lip, but she had compartmentalized the damage to her pride and would deal with that once caring for the stupid firelizard was done. She was a dragonhealer, after all, even if she was just an apprentice. Flits were almost dragons, and she felt compelled to help even if he *had* done this to himself. "You'll be okay soon, dummy," Calyse said without a hint of malice.

Arriving on the dragon side of the Infirmary, Calyse found the cabinet in the back rooms where jars of numbweed were always kept and took one down. She set Fabio on the countertop nearby, fetching a brush to apply the cream with - useless hands would help neither of them. "Alright, you." She approached and setting the tools she had collected beside him - a pot of numbweed and brush, a jar of redwort, linen for bandages, and a cloth. "This'll sting to start, b-but then we can apply the soothing cream. We have to clean those burns first or you'll get an infection." Dousing the cloth in redwort, she set about gently wiping his burns with the astringent.

Fabio watched the preparations curiously. But hurt too much to really move much. But the GoldPet seemed to want to help, even though he make the gold smaller. He truly felt bad about that at the moment, though he'd forget soon enough. As soon as the brush hit his hide he squealed with indignant pain. But didn't try to bite, or go between. But he did hunch down on himself, making a smaller target. While making the most piteous sounds.

Calyse's lips pulled into a sympathetic frown; she never liked to hurt anything or anyone. She'd gone into her craft to help dragons, and flits were *sort of* like tiny versions of them. "D-Don't worry, it'll all feel better soon," she assured the foolhardy bronze. Satisfied his burns were clean, she spread a generous smear of numbweed over the tender hide and then set about wrapping him in bandages to protect the flesh while it began healing.

"Now don't you go pulling these off," Calyss cautioned. "You don't want more scars." She took the time to carefully put away her tools, fastidious as always, before scooping Fabio back into the cradle of her arms. "Okay, little guy. Let's find your..." SHe checked his collar. "D'vik."

As soon as the numbweed his his hide, Fabio relaxed into the girls arms with a relived sigh. He knew all about This part of the healing. This was the good part, when the hurt stopped. Though he wasn't so much a fan of being wrapped up. He didn't worry about scars, ladies liked scars. Or something like that. He wriggled slightly as she scooped him up again after putting things away, but made no complaints. One strand of non-torched hair had fallen forwards where he could reach it, he turned and rubbed his little wedge head through the soft locks as if he'd completely forgotten what had happened mere moments ago.

Calyse found herself unable to stay mad at the little 'lizard while he behaved so affectionately - even if the stench of burned hair still followed her everywhere. She'd have to do something about that. For now, she concentrated on finding this mischievous thing's owner. Tracking down a rider named D'vik wasn't difficult, and she was given directions to his weyr by one of the staffers passing in the halls.

Stomping up to the tunnel-side entrance, Calyse paused to tuck her badly asymmetrical hair behind her ears so that she didn't look entirely out of order. She approachd his weyr and knocked several times to announce her presence. "I have something of yours!" She called through the door, clear frustration in her words. "Candidate Calyse here, sir!"

D'vik right at this moment had his hands quite full. Literally, small chunks of meat were held in one of his hands as he knelt by his small fireplace. Hearing the knock, and identification, the rider's mind automatically thought of his bronze flit Fabio, and wondered what trouble the little dummy had gotten into this time. The wher egg wiggled again, he daren't move away, so he simply called out.

"The door's unlocked, come on in. I'll pay for whatever Fabio ruined." His voice was mellow, and kept to soothing tones, but was easily loud enough to be heard on the other side of the door. Fabio reacted to the soothing tones with a happy croon and began humming just a little, sensing with his scattershell little mind that a hatching was coming.

Calyse burst into the room with a rehearsed lecture ready about the irresponsibility of letting a problematic firelizard go where he pleased, only to stop abruptly in her tracks a few steps into the weyr. She gawked at the unexpected scene. D'vik was handsome,  more so than she had been anticipating, hunkered low over a wiggling egg so large it could only been a wher's. She felt strain of her anger begin to dissipate.

"O-Oh, um," she stammered, rose flushing her face a flustered hue. "He-- s-sorry, I just-- my hair, he-- shells." Calyse held up the bandaged bronze as if this might more clearly convey what she was trying to say. Blonde hair hung in a straight length down her shoulders except where it had obviously been burned away, the asymmetrical ends dramatically shorter on one side than the other and curly where heat shriveled some of the strands.

"I-I don't think you can pay for my hair, but he’s hurt himself a little. ....Is.. is that egg *hatching*?" She asked, unable to keep the curiosity from her face though her voice remained monotone.

D'vik glanced up as she entered and watched the transformation of her features, a pretty girl when not on the warpath. He smiled over at her and nodded towards a rather large reading chair near the exit to the ledge. The chair was obviously a custom made one, given the size.

"Please have a seat, looks like Fabio got you good. Are you alright? Beyond the obvious I mean? Looks like he got himself too, poor dummy." He kept one eye on the egg, that rolled this way and that, beyond him on the mantle sat a second bronze flit, humming and studying the girl. Over by the outer part of the weyr, a large blue dragon was lounging on the ledge, his head stuck curiously into his rider's area to watch.

"It sure is. If you have a seat, after I get this little one fed, we will see what we can to to redress the problem."

Calyse didn't notice the unusual size of the chair until she had mosied over and planted herself on the cushion, realizing only then with a start that the piece of furniture dwarfed her. She twisted to cast a bewildered look at the huge armchair, mildly alarmed by the way her feet barely graced the floor while she sat atop it. Suddenly aware of how childlike she seemed there, she resisted the urge to swing her legs in absent fidgeting and laid the humming Fabio across her lap. All the outrage she'd built up on the way to D'vik's weyr had vanished in the wake of such an exciting moment, a hatching!

D'vik spoke. Calyse tore her eyes away from the dancing egg, addressing him with raised eyebrows. "Hm? Um, y-yes. I'm fine, at least I think so. Only a little singed." Nothing hurt, thankfully, but she hadn't had time to view herself in a mirror yet. Perhaps it was worse than she thought. Suddenly self-conscious about her appearance, she combed awkwardly through her charred hair. "Fabio got burned a bit, b-but I cleaned and dressed him already. I can send a pot of numbweed up in case he hurts more later." The words tumbled out of her in a rush. "I'm sorry to interrupt this," she indicated the hatching with a hand. "A-Are you sure it's okay that I stay?"

D'vik couldn't help a soft chuckle at her rambling, though there was nothing of cruelty in it. The egg in front of him seemed to almost wiggle in time with the chuckle. Fabio arranged himself happily in her lap, and the second bronze more or less ignored her. The leathery egg gave another great wobble, and split as if there was a seam down the side of it. From the egg fell a small blue wher. Unfortunately for it, it had landed on it's back. It gave a squeal that was half hunger, half disgust at being stuck upside down.

D'vik with his lack of fear around draconics simply reached over and with one of his large hands righted the little fella, completely ignoring the attempt to take a chunk out of his hand. "Easy there lad, easy. Here's something much tastier than a bony hand. Here you go." With those calm words he started feeding the Hatchling bits of meat. There was one more squeal, then the bond fell into place, and the tiny fellow made a low happy croon, which was immediately echoed by the two bronze flits. The blue briefly glanced at the two, then back to the hand with food in it. He gulped the next bit, and the one after that. The bowl seemed to empty far too quickly into the belly of the little fella. With the last bite of food the little blue gave a mighty yawn and crawled into the man's lap, barely keeping his eyes open, and was quickly dozing.

Now that the bond was formed, and the chaos settled for the moment. D'vik rose from his crouch, cradling the blue against his chest. It immediately became clear why the chair was so large, as D'vik himself was a large fella. 6'5 and broad shouldered. He towered over most of the people he knew. He walked slowly towards the girl in his chair, stopping by a table to open a drawer and pull out his own bottle of numbweed.

"Sadly little Fabio there needs treatment quite often. He's a...special sort. Aren't you bud? Got yourself hurt again?" Fabio chittered happily at his person, completely oblivious to the words being spoken, responding instead to the obvious affection behind the words.
