Candidate Watching Attn Sunstreath

Laura Walker

Just because the male dragons didn't stare the Candidates down quite so obviously as Foreth did when they came in did not mean they weren't watching. Talith might appear to be curled and half-dozing on the warm sands but his half-open eyes were following every Candidate as they wandered around the Sands, quietly taking their measure.

((Some of these talk a lot,)) he commented privately to Sunstreath. ((*Mine* never did.)) Not that he could remember being a Weyrling, never mind being in the egg. Still, it felt unlikely that R'tal would have ever been as chattery as these boys.

Re: Did You Pass the Test to See the Eggs? Atten: ALL FEMALE CANDIDATES/ALL/Foreth/Kassia

Nutmeg

It had been burning under Ysolde's skin ever since she had heard the whispers flooding the Barracks that the Weyrwoman had summoned the female members of her family, most of which she knew had their own eye on gold for their own little egg-viewing. Before anyone else. The nepotism had made her blood boil because as far as she was concerned, Kassia had hung a banner that practically screamed "I know who I want to Impress MY dragon's gold eggs. Anyone else need not apply." Separate all the female Candidates known to have their eye on one thing? Sure, she could get behind that. But instead the clearly not good enough "everyone else" had been left on the sidelines waiting to be tossed a bone.

When a summons for the female candidates had come, Ysolde had viewed it with suspicion. In all honesty, she half expected it to be an announcement that none of the other females were permitted to so much as even be too close to the Hatching Caverns. Unless of course you were related. Then she was sure it would be fine. Her face was set in stony severity as she filed in, carefully placing herself close enough to be able to hear. Gancing around her, Ysolde realised that she was surrounded by a sea of happy, expectant faces and for a second, wished she could be one of them. But at the same time, she just couldn't shake the feeling that they were viewing this whole charade through rose tinted lenses. That or had had the wool well and truly pulled over their eyes. Initially a brow had cocked into an inquisitive arch as Kassia talked about having already spoken to some females and immediately her eyes had darted around the room as if she could tell by their hair, their expression, their... something! Anything! Because she didn't think she'd missed any sort of similar request herself, nor any tap on the shoulders. The knife twisted a little more and the surprise was replaced by cool neutrality.

And then, Kassia continued talking and it was all Ysolde could do not for her eyes to fall out of her head in sheer, unadulterated disbelief at what she was hearing. Was this some sort of game that the woman was getting some sort of bizarre pleasure out of? Now telling Candidates that they had to jump through some assorted hoops of whatever ludicrous whim had taken her that morning? Ysolde was finding it harder and harder to believe that this was based entirely on the requests of her dragon and was leaning more and more to it being some sort of diversionary tactic to stack the deck in her family's favour - ensuring that "one of her own" exceeded the odds and walked away with a gold at their side.

For several long seconds she was frozen in place. Everything seemed to have slowed down. Even Kassia's voice seemed distorted and unusual as she asked if they had any questions. Then something happened that anyone who knew how much Ysolde wanted to Impress gold possibly would never have expected. There was a loud and disconcerting groan as the legs of her chair grated along the floor as it was pushed back abruptly and without a word, Ysolde stood up.

As if maybe she wanted to say something, she stayed there several seconds, looking at Kassia with an expression that was devoid of joy, devoid of hopeful expectation and was instead controlled with cold anger. And suddenly, without another word, she picked up her scrolls, turned on her heel and walked out, the clatter of the door returning to its closed state behind her the only announcement that anything had happened at all.

Re: Come See the Eggs...If You're a Male Candidate atten: Ren's Male Candidates/Foreth/Kassia

Ren

OOC: Starring Adhuskren, Akron, Alesyion, Heersofali, Luicion, and Misli

Adhuskren went into the caverns with Misli with a mutual sense of reverence and respect. As they climbed the stands and reached where they would sit, they both bowed to Foreth respectfully.

"Thank you for allowing us to see your eggs, great Sun," Adhuskren intoned to the gold.

"It is an honor for us," Misli added and they sat to look at the beautiful eggs. Though they were boys and had no chance to Impress them, the gold eggs were still stunning and dazzling. "Metalsmiths would sprout wings and fly themselves to have gold wire like that."

"Yes, it's stunning," Adhuskren agreed while looking around at the other eggs. There was one which his eyes kept coming back to and he had to hum. The Winged Vengeance egg stood like a bastion against the others, seeming to protect them while still brooding on its own. "That one, the one that seems to have a black dragon wing spread across the surface. Can you imagine a black dragon?"

"That would be... unique." Misli wanted to say terrifying but didn't want to risk Foreth's ire. "I like that one." He indicated the Moonlit Shivers egg. "It reminds me of home, dead trees under a moon. It looks like there is fog hovering around the egg, but surely that's just dust Foreth kicked up tending them? It adds to the egg's beauty, though."

"That it does," Adhuskren agreed with a hand on the other's. "Foreth has laid a very unique clutch but overall they're sublime and beautiful. Even the ones some might call creepy have a surreal beauty about them."

"One would be very lucky to have a hatchling from Foreth." Misli sighed and the boys fell into silence.

~~~
Akron came in next and sat on the bottom row closest to the eggs after giving Foreth a salute. "Good day, Foreth! You really outdid yourself here. Your clutch is so colorful and vibrant. Sure some are dark, but that just sets up a contrast for the brighter ones. Ooooh look at that one!" He gestured to the Bronze Eye egg. "The base shell is dark while it looks like fire circles it. Makes me think of a smokey quartz surrounded by carnelians. I don't know if you've ever seen gemstones, but they're like dragon eyes, shiny and pretty with different colors. I bet a good steady brown will come from that egg. Do you have any guess?" He didn't know if Foreth would answer him but he'd heard of it happening.
~~
Alesyion's entrance was quiet and respectful, a bow to Foreth before taking up a place in the stands and pulling out his sketchbook immediately. He started drawing the eggs and found himself far more aware of them because of that. Tender and loving detail went into each line and shading. His hand didn't stop until he found the Music in the Water egg and he stared at it with his mouth open a bit. "Golden Foreth, that egg is the most perfect antithesis of you. You who are the blazing fiery sun, there sits an egg which is the epitome of water itself. Listen, too, for I should expect to hear music coming from it. Yes, it is a perfect Harper blue!" He fervently started sketching again, making that egg stand out among them all in his image. "Surely it contains a blue as phenomenal as itself. I should love to meet him in his musical glory. Come hatching day, his story will be grand to hear. With luck, I shall be the one to hear it..." He was lost again in his sketching that his voice trailed off.
~~
Heersofali took his seat reverently and gave the eggs a slow look. It was his second clutch to Stand for and he was excited. Of course, he was also so nervous that he was shaking a little in his hands and feet but he tried his best to hide that. Foreth would surely smell his nerves but he didn't expect her to react to it. "People should be nervous around you," he murmured to himself. "You're the greatest queen on Pern and you've laid two golds. There's no way anyone else is better than you. My mother's dragon isn't from you but... maybe mine will be. Your eggs are creepy but in the way that fall is. You know you're safe and everything is okay, but it's cold and foggy and you can't see... Like we can't see the hatchlings inside the shells! I bet... that one," he pointed at the Endless Sky egg, "Will be very friendly and sweet. Maybe a blue or a green. I'd love to meet them."
~~
Luicion entered with a bit of swagger, stance relaxed and pace easy. He gave Foreth a friendly salute. "Heya great golden Sun! I see ya outdid yerself again, better'n any queen ever did. Woah, check out these eggs!" Luicion flopped down on a bench to resist leaning over the railing. "They look so cool! Man look at that GREENEST one ever!" He gestured to the Disgustingly Oozy egg. "Ohh, Foreth that egg is amazin'! I mean they all are, sure, but that one's so green... Makes me wonder if the shell's gonna be transparent after hatchin'. That looks so cool... Other'n that one... oh who's cool... That blacky-gold egg had me thinkin' you had three golds fer a minute!" Luicion laughed and shook his head. "You would. Oh..." He grew a bit quiet that the Bloodied Mess egg. "That, uh... reminds me of Fort. Of that night when the revolution happened."
Did You Pass the Test to See the Eggs? Atten: ALL FEMALE CANDIDATES/ALL/Foreth/Kassia
When it came to the girls, Kassia wanted to handle them herself. She'd been doing that for days now, just not on a large scale. She called all the girls together and made sure messages would be sent to any that couldn't be there. Once she had their attention, she said:
"Good morning, girls. I know you're all eager to see the eggs. Particularly two very special eggs. And I want to get you that chance." She paused to look around before continuing. Come See the Eggs...If You're a Male Candidate atten: ALL/ALL MALE CANDIDATES/Foreth/Kassia
With Kassia's sleep still erratic, she had had plenty of time to discuss with Foreth what to do about people seeing the eggs. Foreth wanted people to get to see her eggs, but she was also scared, particularly of letting any girls near her eggs that might not be suitable. Boys, however, couldn't possibly Impress to the gold eggs, so she was less worried about those. Kassia sent word that the Caverns would be open all day to any male Candidate who wanted to come look at the eggs. It was ACM T'rif that got appointed to speak to the group and make sure the rules were passed all.
"Only boys are to go to the Caverns are this time," T'rifoshe said, addressing the assembled males. "You are to go in and quietly sit in the Stands. You can go in groups of no more than four. Talking among yourselves is permitted, but no horseplay. Any problems will make you risk not only getting ejected, but from not being allowed at the Egg Touching or even Standing. Do not go near the Sands themselves. Doing that and not being able to Stand will pale to the wrath of Foreth. Also, don't do anything to anger Foreth like insulting her eggs. Any questions?"
OOC: If there are no questions, feel free fore your male Candidates to go see the eggs. Foreth will be watching. Remember, IC Actions have Consequences.
Just Excited JP Kassia/Trifali
sailyn2
It was early morning. It may as well have been much later in the day given how awake Kassia was. Then again, she shouldn't have been awake at all given three days no sleep. Apparently no one had told her that as Kassia was sitting at her desk, going rapidly from one page to another, never really taking anything in even as she scribbled out things. This needed to be done. That needed to be done. Why weren't they done with the project over there? The thoughts flew rapidly through her head and she couldn't settle on just one. Maybe her helper could help run messages. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.
Trifali entered with a brisk knock and paused. She studied Kassia with her gray gaze, tucking a stand of red hair behind her ear. There was something indefinable about the Weyrwoman this morning; she almost vibrated with energy and she looked...manic. Stepping in, she straigthened her shoulders and asked, "Are you alright? Can I get you anything?"
Kassia turned a wide smile on her. Her response came rapid fire. "I'm fine. Very fine. There's two eggs...gold eggs...on the Sands. How could I not be fine? Everything is great!" Then she looked down at the paperwork. "There's just so much sharded work. Too much work. Things aren't going fast enough. Why isn't Foreth's pond done yet? They keep making excuses."
"What can I do?"
She gave a tentative smile, stomach tightening in shared excitement about the golden eggs. What must it be like to be Kassia right now? She nearly asked, but bit her tongue. The woman had shared enough at the lecture and after. And while they were family, Fali was still feeling her way around the relationship, careful not to step on the goldrider's toes figuratively speaking.
Kassia jumped up from her chair and started pacing. "Go on a walk with me. Can't sit here. Need to keep moving. Talk to me. Tell me what you're thinking. Do you like the gold eggs? Are you happy working for me? How are you doing? These rains are awful, aren't they?"
She looked at the figure of the restles Weyrwoman for a moment, a little taken aback by the flood of questions. She'd never seen her, not like this. But Trifali was game to do whatever she felt was needed. Family was like that, she was learning.
]Turning, she opened the door for Kassia in open invitation. The woman was all but shaking with energy, which seemed to add a presence to her. She seemed larger than the room containing her. It was a little fascinating, and a little scary.
"This way," Kassia said, bouncing a little as she walked. She led the way to the side entrance of the Caverns that led into the Weyr instead of outside into the rain. She giggled a little. "Tell me. Tell me."
Fali's heart beat faster as she thought back to the day she and the others had seen the eggs. She'd been captivated by the caged egg, lost in its complexities. Licking her lips, she took the questions in reverse order, giving herself more time to examine how she felt.
"The rain isn't so bad if you're inside. I'm well, thank you. Working for you is something I like very much, because I'm not only learning from you, I'm spending time with family." She flushed a little and for a moment, ducked her head so that her hair fell forward. Then she straightened, firmly telling herself to discard the old habbit.
"The eggs.... Well, they're beautiful..." she temporized, watching Kassia's swift, almost jerky movements and wondering what could possibly have the Weyrwoman givin off an almost franetic energy. It wasn't necessarally a bad thing, but she felt a little frantic herself with the Weyrwoman all but vibrating beside her.
"Good, good." From the response it wasn't clear whether Kassia had heard a word that Fali had said. She reached around to tug on her braid. "Two gold eggs, what am I going to do? Two gold Weyrlings. Two gold eggs of Foreth's. This is a good thing. It has to be a good thing. A good sign." She turned to Trifali suddenly. "What do you think of the other eggs?"
This she was prepared for. "They're all very unique," she answered honestly. "I believe Foreth did a wonderful job."
She paused for a moment, watching, Kassia's expression. It was as if the Weyrwoman couldn't decide how or what to feel. Impulsively, she reached out a hand and touched Kassia's arm in concern.
"They're all special. Anyone would be proud to lifemate to any of those eggs on the sand. Are you alright?"
The last came out quietly even as they continued to move a few steps, her own energy carrying them further. She could feel the Weyrwoman lmost shivering beneath her hand, quivering like a horse about to bolt.
Kassia jumped like she's been shot with an arrow and then settled a bit. She didn't shove away the hand. Instead she smiled widely again. "Something wrong? Of course not? Why would you think that? I feel great!" She turned back to the front. "I want to dance. We should have a dance! One that doesn't get stopped by something that I can go to...and dance."
"Because you're not acting like yourself," came the softly concerned answer. She wondered, for the first time, if she should get a Healer to check Kassia over. She looked into wild gray eyes so like her own and understood inately that something was amiss. SHe had hoped to speak to her about the egg and her almost visseral response to it and if that meant she was setting up for failure, but she thought in this moment that Kassia needed something that wasn't shiney right now on her mind.
"Maybe we should get some klah, talk about, well, you." Faranth, was she even doing this right?
"I'm telling you I'm feeling great." There was almost a bite to the words now, a flash in her eyes that was gone almost as fast as it came. "Definitely no klah, but we can go sit. If you want. We can talk about anything you want. Forget work. I don't need to do work."
"Let's sit," she agreed, thinking fast. "I just want to help, Kassia, I swear."
Kassia looked around. There were no benches or anything, just a long corridor. "If you want to sit, we can go back. But I don't want go back. I want to move, move, move."
Fali swallowed thickly. She considered her words carefully, watching Kassia's expression as she answered: "They're both unique and beautiful and whom ever Impresses them will be the luckiest girl alive at that moment."
Did she dare elaborate? Ask more of this strange, hyperactive side of Kassia? Did she dare, in fact, to bare her soul just a little and admit that she was partially in love with one of the golden eggs and shouldn't, in her mind, dare to hope, not when her lifemate might be in one of the other shells or not even at this hatching. She bit her lower lip again, a nervous gesture from her childhood.
“Lucky, you think they’d be lucky?” Kassia demanded, turning a steady gaze on the Candidate. “Lucky to have found a lifemate that might try to tear your mind apart to gain control? To have to compete with another gold Weyrling when one is hard enough? To all the duties? To all the problems that baby golds create? To a life of danger just because you’re linked to a shiny? Lucky like that?”
She looked into the older woman's clear gray eyes with her own. Her back was ram-rod straight, her shoulders back. She recognized that somehow, she'd misstepped, but she refused to wilt under that steady gaze, to back down.
                  "Lucky," she repeated, strongly. "We all understood what we were agreeing to when we                    agreed to stand as Candidates for the gold eggs. If I see it as lucky, as well as all the things you just said, then that's my opinion. You did ask what I thought, didn't you?"
Kassia gave a snort. "We'll see if they're lucky." She looked back the way they came and turned around. "I have duties to do. I can't take a walk." She started striding back the way they came.
She would not apologize. Yes, she understood that becoming a goldrider had risks and caviats. But it also meant that she, they, who ever Impressed the twin golds, was lucky. Faranth, anyone who left the grounds partnered come hatching day would be lucky, she added silently as she shadowed Kassia back to her office.
"Can I get you anything?" was what she asked, a little breathlessly, as Kassia and she returned to the office doorway. While she wouldn't apologize, she refused to hold tight to resentment. What ever bothered the Weyrwoman was a kind of thing she, alone, couldn't help her with, she thought.
Kassia made her way around her desk, but remained standing as she started to rifle quickly through the papers on her table. Without looking at Trifali, she said, "Not yet. You can watch the eggs until I need you."
"Understood," Trifali said, regretting that she'd seemingly drivenn a wedge between them. SHe'd fix it, once Kassia was -- well, she assumed -- calmer.
Wordlessly, she turned away now and gazed out over the sands. An egg there, one here, yet another over there. She familiarized herself yet again with every egg. But last, and with an almost painful beat of her heart, she focused on the golden egg that looked as though its occupant was in a cage.
She glanced back at Kassia, sighing softly before returning her focus to the banded and barred gold of the egg. If the woman wanted her help, she would ask. Until then, all Trifali could do was wait.
Double the Golden Advice JP/B'lin
sailyn2
OOC: Set three days after the Clutching
A few days after the eggs were laid, Kassia turned to Foreth. The gold was being a little more agreeable now that she was no longer gravid and she was eager to show off her eggs in a very careful manner. So far she’d been okay with people who weren’t possibly able to Impress the gold eggs and that she knew well to come see them.
“Love, can B’lin come see the eggs?” she asked.
Foreth stretched out her head so that it was away from her eggs and Kassia could come up to stand on tiptoe and scratch near her headnobs.
((If he doesn’t come near my eggs,)) the gold gave her standard answer.
“Will you call for him or do I have to ask someone else?” Kass used her other hand to scratch the Queen’s cheek.
There was a moment of no reply while Foreth groaned happily at the scratches and then she said, ((If I must.))
Kassia stepped back off the Sands and headed to her desk in the Rankers’ Stands to get some work done while she waited.
((Yours is to come see my egg,)) Foreth said, her words still closer to polite than usual. Closer.
A few moments passed before Quelenth replied cautiously, ((Is it an emergency or may he finish breakfast?))
For once the gold didn’t lie and she was feeling a bit more straight forward, ((It is not an emergency. Bring Mine breakfast, too. She is not eating enough.))
((He says he’ll bring a tray. No fish,)) Quelenth reassured. He hesitated. The Hatching Grounds could get crowded already with two fathers about, but still. ((Would you like company?))
((No fish,)) Foreth agreed. She didn’t need to eat much now that she clutched, which might be part of the reason Kassia wasn’t eating as much. ((You can come. Just don’t upset Talith or Truenoth.))
Oddly, telling B’lin he didn’t have to hurry still got him to hurry if he could, and got him arriving in a much better mood besides. He came to greet Foreth first before even looking for Kassia, proud of her in an oddly fatherly way. After all, she had been his baby gold first, and now look at her, laying two gold eggs at once.
“You did well, girl,” he greeted her, as Quelenth tried to find a spot unlikely to offend either of the two males watching the eggs.
Foreth rumbled proudly and preened, clearly liking the approval. ((Do you like my daughters, too?)) she asked Quelenth, assuming that he’d see them through B’lin’s eyes.
Kassia smiled, happy to see the interaction. Foreth’s happy mood was so rare, it was worth celebrating.
((They’re lovely,)) Quelenth said. ((And the others too - how many?))
“A lot,” B’lin said. “That’s going to be one big class.”
Foreth pulled the number from Kassia’s head. ((Twenty six including the gold eggs.)) Not a huge clutch, but still a decent size as far as Foreth was concerned. Of course what gold wouldn’t want more and more eggs. After they were laid anyway. Not so much while she was carrying them.
“I don’t envy the AWLMs,” Kassia said, coming up beside him and slipping her hand in his. “Especially the gold eggs. I’m already trying to figure out how us goldriders are going to handle our end with the new goldriders.” She squeezed his hands. “Do you have any suggestions?”
B’lin looked down at her and laughed. “Female WeyrlingMasters perhaps?” he suggested drily. “Ones who are very much not interested.”
Kassia coughed and gave him an innocent look. “Perhaps a good idea,” she said. “Of all the Weyrlings, they’re the ones I worry the most about that.” And not just because of her own experiences. Okay, a lot because of her own experiences, but also because of the type of person it usually took to Impress a gold. Strong willed, persistent, and maybe a bit of a manipulative side. Queens wrapped the Weyr around their finger and their riders often tried, too.
“Of course your problem is there’s two of them, and they’re contrary types. If you give them no other way to rebel they’ll sleep with each other,” B’lin said. “Though if you want advice -- that is it, really. Give them some way to rebel that they can win.”
Kassia raised an eyebrow. “And what sort of thing would that be? Something that doesn’t cause the other Weyrlings to rebel as well, preferably.”
“Faranth knows. Can you give them some duty just for goldriders that they’ll want to get out of?” B’lin suggested.
“That’s something that could probably could be done,” Kassia agreed. “I’m open to anything. I’m really scared that this could go badly.”
“Ah, Kass.” Until now B’lin had been at least half-joking. Now he slipped his arm around her, seeing the seriousness. “Don’t court trouble before you have it. For all you know it’ll be a pair of tiny twelve turn olds and you can deal with them by sending them to bed early.”
“Oh Faranth, twelve turn olds.” Kassia looked even more horrified by that. She leaned into him, holding him tight. “I’m not sure what’s worse. Although at least the twelve year olds aren’t going to lose their gold by sleeping around.”
“Twelve turn olds are fine. I’ve taught plenty of them. Naughty, sure, but less inclined to think they know everything than the older ones.” B’lin rubbed her back lightly. “You sure this is what you’re really worried about?”
“I don’t know, I haven’t slept,” Kassia said in one breath then in the next, “I’m afraid of keeping them safe. Keeping everyone safe. My family. You, M’gal, and Sh’ain. The Candidates. The Creche. So many people to keep safe.”
There were guards watching. B’lin still hadn’t got used to the guards; couldn’t yet regard them as breathing disinterested furniture.
“Shall we take a little wander to that side-bit you’re living in?” he suggested gently.
Kassia looked around at the temporary weyr which was definitely bigger after the expansion. She looked back at him and nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, we can.”
She pulled away to grab his hand and lead him inside to a couch.
B’lin put his arms around her as they sat down, pulling her close into him and resting his chin on her head. “You know you have to sleep.”
“Not sleepy,” she said, snuggling into him. Something had switched with the closer contact and now her hands were reaching to pull his shirt out from his pants to find skin.
“When was the last time you slept?” It wasn’t that B’lin was unwilling exactly, more that he was worried, and suspecting that he’d forget that if he surrendered too quickly to Kassia’s distraction.
Kassia sat back and gave him a dodgy look, not liking his line of questioning. “A little bit,” she said and returned to what she was doing. “Come on, I’ve been busy.”
“Kass.” B’lin captured her hands very gently in his own. “We do a deal,” he said. “We go to the bedroom, which feels slightly further away from where guards are pretending they’re not listening. And afterwards you sleep.”
Kassia pulled slightly at his hands then settled. “Sleep gets in the way,” she said with a frown.
“You sleep,” B’lin repeated, gentle and firm, his tone very much that of her WeyrlingMaster. “Or I go talk to K’ren and his way of making you sleep won’t be as fun.”
The look Kassia gave him was less than friendly. She glared at him a long moment, her leg bouncing up and down. Then she grabbed his hand and stood to tug him toward the bedroom. “You come with me. We talk about sleep later.”
There was an argument brewing there, crackling in the air like the threat of thunder. For now, B’lin let it pass. She was tired. And besides, if he tired her out a little more she might not have a choice about the sleep.
{{Treasure, you say?}} Now the young blue was interested as he peered out past the bronze waiting in the depths to stop them.
S'lion put a stop to that train of thought by reaching up, grasping Tototh's jaw, and pulling him down so that his dragon was looking right at him in surprise. "No." The word was heavy with empathy and command, will oozing out of it so much that Tototh actually sat down in the water with a cheep. "You'll listen now just like you'll listen later. Look at Mandath- do you see him charging in and disobeying?"
{{No,}} Tototh agreed with a glance towards his favorite brother. {{He's trying to organize everyone into ranks to go into the water. Should we join?}}
"We don't have to, no. We're having our lesson with Yiyu and that's fine. We don't always have to listen to Mandath, at least not yet."
"Jus' J'zat's fine, sir." J'zat responded, with a nod of gratitude for both the prompt door answering and the removal of one of the trays. "Ya got it." he added, after a moment, standing patiently until the desk was cleared, before setting down his own tray opposite Ko'ssen's. "'Pologies if ah interrupted anythin'. Figured it was lunchtime, though, and Meisteth said yer bronze hadn't moved from his spot, so ah figured you were still in here." He squinted, briefly, at the hides. "Lesson plans?"
Watching the young woman as she slid into the offered seat across from him, when she just started talking without taking the opening he'd left to introduce herself it actually took a second for Ko'ssen to catch up with her unexpected words.
So, as she rambled before that first breath, Ko'ssen just blinked at her as he tried to listen, probably looking a little more awkward than he had before she had started speaking.
When she finished the rush with asking about becoming an assistant weyrlingmaster, Ko'ssen sat there for a moment looking her over as he worked through everything she's said in such a rush. She looked young...much younger than any of his current AWLMs, but he wasn't sure how old she really was, and realistically she *could* have impressed very early as a candidate and so could have more years as a rider than he thought, so age wasn't necessarily an issue.
However, instead of answering her initial question Ko'ssen held his hand out to her and said with a friendly smile "With such a large clutch on the Sands, I appreciate your interest in becoming an assistant weyrlingmaster and we can certainly talk about that. However, I apologize Miss. You know who I am, but I've not had the pleasure of meeting you before. Please, call me Ko'ssen. Even now it's still a little odd to just be called 'Weyrlingmaster.'"
As her brother said it was *more* than one, Bronwynn's eyebrows rose slightly in surprise but the grin that spread on her face showed she was happy that *he* was happy. She took in his blush and tried to give him a look reassuring him that she wasn't judging him.
As he finished, Wynn nodded her head saying "Z'rain, really it's ok. I understand. I'm just glad you're happy finally, and you should hold onto that happiness. I just hope I can finally hear about them while we are catching up today." As she finished, Wynn smiled to show she really was ok, as even though she'd been hoping he'd eventually move here with her she did understand.
With his last words, Wynn put a hand on his arm saying happily "Alright, then let's get looking!" as she turned slightly and waved with a hand at her booth with it's makeshift portable racks of hanging clothes.
As he smiled to reassure her, and said that he really was doing good Wynn couldn't quite keep the slightly skeptical and concerned look off her face completely. Still, she let him believe she was reassured, for the moment, and nodded as she responded with "Well, it doesn't all just fall on you to visit. I could work on visiting Igen more with Wysin, and I'm sorry I haven't. I really should visit you more there, see what or *who* keeps you living there." As she said the 'who', Wynn couldn't help the small grin she gave her brother, even as the grin showed there were truly no hard feelings that he'd chosen not to move to Arolos and be closer to her.
After that grin, she continued with "But seeing you more, whether here or at Igen, wouldn't go amiss. Otherwise, Wysin might suddenly be 12 turns old and doing...who knows what craft or life path after the creche!" With that last bit, Wynn let a bit more of the previous mock horror leak into her voice at imagining her little boy being 12 turns old!
"More than one who, actually," said Z'rain. He blushed. Even after all these Turns, there was still enough Fort in him that it was difficult to talk about things that would have seen him beaten or worse there. Things that made him happy. "If it were only one, it might be easier to convince them to move, but... they've all got family at Igen, too, so... you understand. I hope."
"Anyway, I would absolutely love to try on something new."
Re: Lakeside to the Danger Zone ((Attn: Marsali, Rosk))
Rosiegirl
Marsali was just thinking that maybe she had arrived *too* early because she hadn't yet seen the bluerider she was supposed to assist when Rosk greeted her and waved. There was a brief hesitation in her movements as a slightly embarrassed look crossed her face when she abruptly realized that the rider her eyes had scanned over a couple of times while looking for Rosk *was* infact Rosk himself! It was quite a different experience looking for someone that you'd only ever seen fully clothed and then realizing you'd not recognized him because of them being *only* in a pair of swimming shorts.
The hesitation was small though as she quickly recovered from the initial embarrassment she'd felt and walked with purpose (despite only being 5ft even and not having long stride-eating legs) toward Rosk and his blue. Noticing that the blue lifted his paw and gave her a wave as well as the mental greeting suddenly filling her head, Marsali waved first to Fephumith saying in polite greeting "Hello, handsome Fephumith."
Then she turned to really look at the bluerider with a smile and a wave saying "Fair skies, Bluerider Rosk." As she reached him, standing there in front of him entirely unconcerned with what she was wearing (or more specifically, entirely unaware of just how beautiful she was), and looked up into his striking blue eyes Marsali's brain finally caught up to what exactly her *eyes* were seeing when she looked at him...
And once her brain caught up, her own blue-grey eyes flicked away from his face as they ran down his body again, taking in the muscles that had always before been covered by a shirt. And the only thought that she was able to form was 'Wowza!' as her cheeks flamed bright red. And then she was immediately totally *mortified* by the fact that she was blushing so deep that she could actually feel it and she whipped her eyes back up to his face as she straightened her shoulders.
Thinking the best thing to do was to just ignore and power through the totally embarrassing reaction she'd had, Marsali swallowed hard and said with just a bit of a stumble (which she *hated*) "I-I hope you and your lifemate have had a good day so far, Sir. I'm ready whenever you are to assist with washing Fephumith."
Rosk had seen the girl, Marsali, maybe dozens of times. He liked to spend his free time helping out at the kennels when he could, and being near the beastcrafters, he often crossed paths with the Candidates who helped there, even the ones who helped at the stables. Like Marsali.
And he had never gotten up the courage to do more than smile, wave, or say hello. Fephumith had not exactly suggested that he ask for her to be assigned to help wash him. But he had been telling himself a story lately about a runner-riding, fair-haired maiden, and eventually, his story took a turn to that maiden giving him a bath.
Rosk felt a little guilty for having asked. Like he was pushing the boundaries of abusing his position. But when he saw Marsali looking for him at the lake, he smiled, and his guilt melted away. She was so beautiful.
"Hello," he greeted her with a wave. He, too, wore his swimsuit. Fephumith lifted a paw and wiggled his claws at her.
He called out to have the person enter, noting the young man that entered. Based on his appearance, S'ryll identified him to be a candidate and a crafter. He nodded his head in greeting.
"Good day to you. I'm wingleader S'ryll of Bronze Vastolth."
Vastolth was sleeping right now, disinterested in these boring
"Good day to you and Vastolth. I hope you are both having a good day."
Jerwain greeted offering the man nod as he took the offered seat. "My
having craft things to do right now since Foreth hasn't even laid her
"Leadership experience," Asheran said immediately, having had plenty of time throughout the day to think about his answer - not that he had needed the whole day to figure it out. It was obvious. He had taken a seat when directed to, and leaning forward in the chair now, he elaborated:
"I have ambitions for when - after - I Impress, but I don't have a lot of practical experience leading others, and I've got no experience leading dragon riders. I don't have any illusions about what the role entails, but I'm hoping to learn from how you handle your wing in and out of Threadfall."
And, honestly, I've also had to come to terms with the fact that I might not Impress at *all*. At this hatching, I mean."
She looked t Kassia for a long momen, her face a study of emotions. "And saying all that, I'm aware that I will still hold out hope until the hatching is over and I'm left standing. Hope and fear seem to go hand in hand, don't they?
