"Don't worry about it." He stood up, brushing off his trousers, awkward with the gratitude in a way he hadn't been with the grief. "Catch you later, yeah?"

As soon as Cremsden left the room, Tareg was up and exploring. He looked everywhere- giving a low whistle as he found a cabinet of sharp and shiny. It didn’t take long for one to disappear up his sleeve and he curled up as small as he could on the chair, his ankle protesting as he did. The weight of the sharp and shiny in his sleeve was reassuring, and he pulled his hands into the sleeves to better feel for it.

Maybe this was a bad idea, he thought, as the second healer entered and he eyed her warily. At least she wasn’t drunk.

“Hi.” He finally answered her. He did not like being here. His mama would- no. She doesn’t matter. He wasn’t going back.
“I’m Tareg.”

"Right." And Cremsden was only a couple of minutes behind. "Okay, youngster -- Tarin is it? This is Journeywoman Ishixi, Tarin and I'm Journeyman Cremsden, yeah? So, if you've never seen a Healer what we're going to do today is give you a nice thorough check over to make sure there's nothing nasty hiding to trip you up later and get that ankle -- is it your ankle or foot that hurts? - sorted out for you. He snapped his fingers and grimaced. "And I forgot to ask - did that bluerider who came in with you search you? We might as well do your check up before the Hatching now if that's needed."

OOC: Thought I'd give us a post or two before klah arrives.

"And all of that," Cremsden said more sternly, "fresh from the book." He was moving now, opening cupboards to pull out pen, ink and fresh hide. "Books are expensive and if they have hundreds of apprentices pawing over them constantly they don't last," he said firmly. "I've no objection to youngsters straying in looking for a bit of knowledge but you want to work you do it by the same rules as our own apprentices, you understand? Pen and ink is *here*, fresh hide is *here* and if you're not looking up something where the patient is at serious risk if you don't get back to them immediately you make your own copy and refer back to that. And if you're pulling a book out not already on a desk, you *ask* first -- find me or a journeyman. Are we clear?"

Aryn's presence had either been forgotten or considered not important just now.

Aryn bit back a grin at the pair. As much as she wanted her daughter to sharding wait- she had a feeling that this healer would look after her daughter.

Roryn gave a quick nod, staring at the hide and ink, fingers flicking at her side in excitement. “So you don’t /mind/ I’m here?” She asked. “I’ll follow the rules and make my own copies. Copying helps me remember better anyway.” She added, hands itching to write down what she learnt.

"You couldn't disturb me," he replied quickly enough, trying to put the young (but older than him) woman at ease. He considered offering her a sleeve to wipe her eyes with, but he stunk of sweat and sun-baked skin from the run, and doubted that was what would soothe her. She was probably worried about the clutch the same as he had been infrequently throughout the past week - though in her own feminine way, he supposed, with tears instead of a doubling up of exercise and physical exertion.

"I was just about to go for a swim to cool off after the run, anyway," he rubbed at the back of his sweaty neck, "...ah, is he yours?"

He gestured to the firelizard on her shoulder.

The first day of the med hunt, Lerian had spent hanging out with the guys. But this morning, just after breakfast, Lerian spotted his friend Almira. He hadn't even been sure she was coming or he'd have checked on her sooner. He bounced over to the older girl, full of youthful energy. On each shoulder sat a flit, Sandy was calm and behaved, Star was snoozing in a little pocket Lerian had clumsily sewn onto his shirt with his little belly stuffed full.

"Hey Almira! I didn't know you came on this, having fun so far? I have been looking around, you should see the cliff I found yesterday, it was so cool, and I wanna see what was on top of it. I was gonna go check it out, wanna go with?"

After catching that first bite, Dahlia perched herself on the rib cage, spreading her wings for balance and chirping excitedly at Magpie as he nudged her. Then she proceeded to gobble down every second or third bit of meat tossed her way.

She hurried off and poured three mugs of the steaming strong klah they generally had in the infirmary, putting the mugs, a bowl of sweetener and a spoon on a tray. Next she loaded a plate with small meatrolls, fruit and a small piece of cheese before adding them to the tray and carrying the whole lot to the room Cremsden had indicated. As her hands were full she knocked on the door with the ball of her foot.

"First job, grab -- eh, make it three klahs and a tray of whatever snacks the breakroom has to offer and bring them through to that room there, you see?" Cremsden gestured. "Better  add a bowl of sweetener too or we'll poison the poor kid. After that you'll find a bluerider in the waiting room -- easy to find, bad leg and a stick. Go double-check with him that he doesn't want a klah and then get a patient history from him for the kid he just brought in, got it? We need to know all about the kid and what happened to him -- ask everything you think relevant, take notes and we'll go through later to see if there's anything you missed. That okay?"

Ishkana looked up, trying not to bristle at being called kid. Well, she supposed that Cremsden *was* much, much older than her. "Yes sir?" She was happy to be given any jobs at the minute, it broke up the intensive studying she was doing.

"Thanks. Two minutes and I'll join you," Cremsden promised. Another glance about and this time he found what he was looking for. He beckoned to Ishkana. "Hey kid. Over here a minute, couple of jobs for you."

Ishi was just finishing up some notes when she heard her name and the question that followed.  Standing she stretched and then smiled over at  Cremsden, "of course, I'd be happy to help."  She probably wouldn't even have to do anything. Some people where just happy to have another person in the room if they were nervous.

Walking into the room she smiled softly at Tareg, "hello I'm Ishixi."

"Well, you'll find it's different for most people here -- Healers included!" Cremsden turned to offer him a quick grin. "Not many places have Infirmaries this big -- the major holds you might find a few Healers working together but Infirmaries this size are pretty much Weyr only. More injuries in Weyrs, see, comes from fighting Fall. Good for us, means we get better equipment and the facilities to train people but a bit intimidating if you're not used to it, yeah?" He dried his hands briskly on the nearby towel. "Now let's see who we've got out here. Two minutes and I'll be back," he promised, stepping out.

A complete lack of female Senior Apprentices was what they had. Bad timing in terms of shift patterns. Cremsden grimaced, and went to the next best option.

"Hey, Ishixi, you free for a bit?" he called over. "Would you mind sitting in with me for a patient? Got a kid and I think he'd be less scared with a female in the room."

Tareg frowned slightly before giving a nod. “Been ages since I had some Klah.” He admitted. He looked at the ground, giving a shrug. “I ain’t- I never actually seen a Healer before.” He admitted. “Was always tol’ta stay clear of’em.” He forced himself to exhale. “I don- I don’t mind iffen you need help. No sure I c’n get comfortable ‘ere. It’s too different.” He froze, lips pursing. Too much- he said tooshardin much. They would figure it out and send him back. Healers were clever. Almost as clever as Harpers. He well and truly fecked up.

"Okay."  Cremsden looked at him for a moment. "What I'd like to do, lad, is invite one of the senior apprentices in here. That helps me for note-taking and means that you've got a little assurance that if you think I'm about to do anything you don't like at any point their job is to make sure I stop. Do you think that would make you a little more comfortable?" He turned to wash his hands as he spoke, speaking over his shoulder. "And that is a guarantee in here. Doesn't matter if you're ten or twenty, you yell out that you don't want me to do a thing, I back off. I don't do that and I can get in a good deal of trouble. Would *you* like a klah, by the by?"

Oil after redwort? That was a new one on her. But she guessed he knew what he was talking about. "A paddle for larger areas, sir? Is it less..." She waved her hands, not knowing the right word, "Less tickly for some patients?" She nodded, shadowing someone would be good. She learned quickly. "Yes please, sir. I want to do this."

"You get used to people being sick on you," Cremsden assured her. "And crapping on you for that matter. Sensitive stomachs don't last long around here." He ran through her list in his head for a moment. "_Oil_ to stop numbweed, sweetheart, redwort then oil else you'll be useful for very little for the rest of the day. Though depending on what it's for you may want to use a paddle. Fellis sedates -- you need to remember that if you're using it, though you won't be prescribing yourself for a good while. Remind riders of it if you get asked to give them some by a journeyman though -- no-one should be *between*ing on fellis and sometimes people forget if the patient's not in front of them to check the knots. Not a bad list all the same though." He sounded approving despite his corrections. "Generally we'll try to give you at least a short period each day shadowing someone. Means you see what's going on and you never know when we'll need a runner for something not in the room."

Ishkana beamed at him. That was a nice clear information request. "I can read well, write okay and do numbers. I know numbweed is generally used for skin or muscle pain, and fellis for inside pain. Redwort is to make things clean and stops the effects of numbweed on a healer's hands. I can make klah and fold bandages, and I don't really have a problem with blood although if someone's sick on me I may throw up too. I generally only got to watch bits and pieces in the Hold, and not do anything except tidying, stirring numbweed kettles and sweeping the floor. Oh, and I'm quite fast at picking and packing needlethorn."

"An aunt and uncle," Ishkana clarified, "Cousins of my mother, so not really close family. Jerronila is one of their children."

"It happens," Cremsden nodded agreeably. "Okay. What I need from you then is to tell me about what kind of things you did growing up - chores, lessons, that kind of thing. We can work to fill in gaps but my life is a lot easier if I know that the gaps are there and need to be filled than if we proceed assuming that knowing how to do a certain thing is standard and end up with you lost." He smiled at her. "Conversely, particularly if you've done any work at all in an Infirmary, there's no point wasting everyone's time by teaching you basics you're already solid on."
