Re: A Walk to Remember Alyx/Any

Jenna Cunningham

Swimming across a lake after running around it for the better part of the last two hours was a bad idea, Asheran realised belatedly. His lungs were already burning, and his muscles pulled at each stroke, even as he fell into more of a rhythm - not graceful, still, but less frenzied, if only due to his growing weariness. His shoulder twinged, and he inhaled water as he cramped, yelping mutedly into the cool water, then resurfaced like a whale - blowing water vigorously out of his mouth and nose, checking to see how far ahead the young woman had gotten. And she had pulled ahead. He might have the advantage of muscles, and his masculine physique, but he had been pushing himself for weeks now, every day, and now here he was.

Well, he wasn't going to lose. He refused.

Instead, he redoubled his efforts, burning stamina in an attempt to just get close enough to Alyx to -- to grab at her ankle, and pull her back, if he could.

Then he'd surge ahead, he told himself, even as his shoulder muscle cramped up again.

A New Arrival(Alieana, Any)

spiritshayde@...

Alieana looked around from her perch atop her dragon, the warm sun making her shiver slightly after the cold of between. The bowl of the Weyr below her was awash with activity, and she smiled as she took in what was her new home. (It is warm here..) Raiyath turned to look at her, her eyes whirling with happiness.(I like this place..it will be a good place to be)

Chuckling, Ari directed the petite green to land at what appeared to be the weyr landing area and slid down to lean against Rai's side, using her leg to steady herself before dropping the rest of the way to the ground. Although small for a dragon, Raiyath was still pretty high up for her rider, who was on the short side. Sliding her riding cap off, she shook out her coppery hair before pulling it up into a runner tail and slinging her jacket over one shoulder.  Moving the riding straps out of the way, she tucked them up into a neck ridge.(Ok Rai,  as soon as I get our weyr assignment, I'll get you out of the straps..hopefully it won't be long.)
  ***************************
(I'm finished Rai, where are you?) Ari walked out into the bowl looking for the bright green of Rai's hide. (I'm coming mine...) there was a pause and she watched as a somewhat dripping dragon landed next to her. Shaking her head she tried to stifle a laugh. Visualizing where the weyr ledge was after settling into the damp neck ridgem she shook her head.((Lets go home..we have alot to get done before tomorrow)

And yet more plants. How exciting.

It seemed that nothing exciting was likely to happen today, so when he spotted familiar berries as the smell of a nearly cooked stew was calling to him, he didn't hesitate to drop them in.
Everyone would be happier after some passionberries, after all.

It was a medicine hunt...out in the wild where no one knew where what they were looking for would be growing.  Of course, the first days would be the hardest out of all of them until everyone had a fairly good idea.  Kirene, however, had been partly on standing by in case someone's pet might need a beastcrafter.  When it came time to eat the 15 Turn old girl eagerly set out toward the smell of stew.

Alyx

Alyx was but a moment behind him, she had spent a lot of time in the water, and had learned to swim neatly. There were no extra splashes, no frenzied motions, but she slid through the water quickly, and quietly. It didn't take long at all before her mind was so caught up with action, movement of feet, of hands, when to breathe, that other, more painful thoughts slid to the back of her mind.

She was careful though, like everything she did, careful about not wearing herself out too soon. Patience was the name of the game, steady, strong beats, rather than quick frenzied energy. Above her Ardy flew a watch out, though he watched both humans for signs of troubles.

"Well, that's a good start." He smiled at her. "Look, honestly? You're going to spend a lot of your first turn ill. Perfectly normal, we all go through it, particularly those of us who grew up in holds."

Roryn was practically vibrating as she turned and looked at her ma.

“I should say no.” Aryn told her before adding, at the crestfallen look. “But I have a feeling you would do it anyway. There are rules though.”

“Yes mama.” Roryn chewed her lip, hands flicking in their own pattern as she worked through the stress/excitement of the moment.

“Right. Rules. One- Take breaks. No more then two candlemarks at a time reading and copying. You take a break- do brat things. “ she exhaled at the nod. “Second rule- I’m going to be finding a guard to teach you to get away from people who can hurt you. Your small. I’m not much bigger. Your da isn’t exactly huge. If you want to be a Healer- you are going to learn to sharding get away from someone and call for help. Understand?”

Roryn wrinkled her nose. “Who would hurt a healer?”

Aryns jaw tightened briefly before she forced herself to relax “People who come to see Healers aren’t always at their best. They are hurt, or upset- or drunk- or all three. You aren’t going to have Stoppit or Gway to back you up, like I do when I’m working.”

Roryn frowned “I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

“I’d rather you hurt someone to keep yourself safe then be hurt or killed. I would miss you.” Aryn added. “And third rule. I’m getting you a flit. Don’t know when it will be but I’m getting you one. Means you will train it and teach it to get other people’s attention as needed.”

Aryn waited for her daughters wide eyed look of acknowledgement before she turned to Cremsden. “Now, I’m hoping Cremsden is fine with these rules. If he has any others, you listen and you do them.”

"Mm." That was very non-committal. "You know where my office is, sweetheart?" he asked Roryn. "Do me a favour and tidy up in here. I'm thinking your mother and I should have a quick word in private."

"It's OK, I don't catch things often." Ishkana was pretty healthy in general. "I get a bit tired sometimes, but I don't think it's anything..." She studied her hands rather than look the healer in the eye.

"Well, the bad news is that for a turn or so you're probably going to catch everything going," Cremsden predicted. "The good news is that we all go through it, particularly those of us who started at small holds, yeah? You've likely got very little immunity to most of the things floating around here so.. If you find you're feeling poorly, come and tell me." He considered her. "And we should probably give you a quick checkover before you start," he added slowly. "Did you have a permanent Healer posted back at home?"

"Chores," Asheran filled in for the new arrival, then backtracked with a vaguely puzzled look. "Why won't there be a gold egg? Eggs don't know how many golds there are or aren't around here. They're just eggs."

"Oh - and I'm Asheran."

Kassia just rolled her eyes. "I give up."

It wasn't intentional that Sengroth landed near where Foreth was being bathed.  It was just where he always landed and, like normal, he sent a distainful glare toward the water, not acknowledging the gold until after he'd once more expressed his distaste for the water.  Huffing the brown simply asked, {{Ye 'ave any dirt YE donnae need?  I'll be needin' it when Mine is NAE lookin'.}}

Kl'ryn raised an eyebrow at his brown at least catching onto the the brown was up to something and the brown bulk blocked out most of his vision of the gold.  Peering around the brown head he quickly recognized Foreth.  "Hello, Weyrwoman.  How has your day been so far?"

Kashara came in and had been listening for a few minutes at the speculations. She snorted as Qioyon asked his question. "There won't be a gold egg, there's way too many golds here already. What are we waging again?" She spoke with an air of authority, not nearly as superior as if it'd been her sister. But then she'd been either having a VIP seat at her mom's side or Standing as a Candidate since she was born. "Oh, and, I'm Kashara, by the way." She wasn't as familiar with Qioyon and one or two of the others.

Congratulations! atten: Delysia/Razelth/Kassia

It was a few days after Razelth's first flight and things were starting to settle down at the Weyr. Foreth was still sulking, but Kassia was excited for the pair. As soon as she knew she'd have some free time, she headed down to Delysia's office, Brogan at her side, and peaked her head in.

"Would you and Razelth care to have a picnic with me at the lake?" she asked.

"It's just on the other side of that hill. Everything there drops off after that hill, this stream's got a pretty waterfall, and part of the rock there looks like a dragon."

Lerian didn't say anything, but there was a nice little path to the bottom. No need to worry about things like slipping and falling. Though once to the bottom they could have lunch, then he wanted to explore the cliff face.

"Of course I do. I'd not have chosen it other wise. Of course part of the reason I like to cook is I rather like to eat. So I wanna see if things are good, and if they are, well I like sharing with my friends. I don't ever wanna be in a spot where I can't find something good to eat."

Usually Lerian wasn't so serious about things. But he remembered fear, and hunger, and when there wasn't enough to go around how things often were dropped for those who were deemed as less. Not that it had happened much to him at Arolos, but he knew that it existed in the world, and he'd do what he could to fight that. Even if all he could do was offer someone a meal. Of course as a rider he could do more, and would.

Alyx was quiet, as she stripped out of most of her clothing. Like many people around here, she wore things easy to swim in under her clothing. Though she was short, and a bit stocky of build, the young woman was in no way heavy. Her body showed that she worked hard, that she took her physical fitness seriously, she waded into the water as Ardy flew about her head making sounds of encouragement at the curly haired woman. Once she was deep enough to push off, she did, at least in the water, no one would see if tears came.

"Alright." She was agreeing to the race, but first ducked her head beneath the water, getting her mass of black curls to slick back out of her face.

"I do try." He grinned over his shoulder, then ducked sideways onto another smaller track. "Watch yer feet Almira, there's some roots through here."

Sandy chirped up ahead of them, and Lerian after a dragonlength or so, turned onto the banks of a small stream, so they'd not be lacking in water either. Now there was room to walk side by side, and he slowed up a bit.
