Re: A Walk to Remember Alyx/Any

"I'm alright," he shot back stubbornly, because he was a teenage boy, and she was a girl - even if she was older. He didn't stop swimming when she had, so he made up some ground... or, well, water - but then the cramp seemed to shoot down his side, from his shoulder straight into his leg, and that cramp (unlike the earlier one) was unignorable. There was no powering through it. One moment he was continuing to swim, and the next he was sinking like a stone, every single movement arrested in favor of just not moving long enough for the pain to go away.

Only it didn't go away, and every time he would resurface, the effort of swimming back up to the surface would intensify the cramping, and he would sink a bit again, splashing about as he tried to balance swimming up with sinking down into a stable sort of tread.

"Sh-ards, it's my leg," he finally called out, the sharp, stabbing ache of it making him swear.

Tareg refused to answer if it was his da or not. He didn’t want to be sent back- and would rather just not talk then tell the truth.

As his boot started being unlaced, Tareg resisted the urge to tug it back. Sure there were more holes in the boot then boot any more- but it was his. “If’n you unlace the rope around it, it the boot’ll fall off.” He finally offered. Lerian darted off the path really quick, and came back with a large handful of red berries, which he held out to share with Almira. He tossed one into his mouth with a grin and went around the bend of the stream, then the path crossed sides, and he hopped quickly from one dryish rock to the next till he was on the other side. There he paused to wait, the stream wasn't very deep here, and the rocks were probably just a long step for the taller girl following him, but he was careful of his friends.

It was a few days after Razelth's first flight and things were starting to settle down at the Weyr. Foreth was still sulking, but Kassia was excited for the pair. As soon as she knew she'd have some free time, she headed down to Delysia's office, Brogan at her side, and peaked her head in.

"Would you and Razelth care to have a picnic with me at the lake?" she asked.

~~~~~~
 "You've caught me at a good time." Delysia admitted, as she rolled up the scroll that she'd been reading from. "I'm just about done going over the inventory of this quarter's tithe from the Weavers." She scrubbed a hand over her eyes. "Who knew that fabric came in so many different varieties." She commented wryly as she stood from her desk and came over to join Kassia at the door.
"Razelth says that she'll join us at the lake." She reported after a moment of mental concentration. "Did you have a particular spot in mind?"
He took a sip from his cup of klah as the other man spoke, letting the warm, spiced liquid settle on his tongue, pricking at his taste buds. Then he swished it around his mouth and swallowed, looking down into the mug. It wasn't that the bronze rider's story wasn't interesting. But it wasn't helpful to him - terrifying, exciting. He could have guessed that for himself. But the intangible parts, the hard to explain parts were what he wanted to know about. He felt like a runner at a Gather race, pulling at the reins, aching to hit the starting line and just go - even if he didn't know he was running toward.
"It sounds like something," he said finally, because he felt that there ought to be words. "What about your brother? Did he - is he a rider, too?"
~~~~~~

Kyn'dras grinned sympathetically. "Not quite what you were hoping for, is it?" He guessed. "But it really is difficult to put to words." His eyes gazed off into the distance as he turned his thoughts inwards. "One moment you're standing there - hot, sweaty, and shaking with nerves - and the next moment he's there, in your head. And it's like he's always been there." The rider seemed to come back to himself with a small shake of his head. "Like I said, hard to explain." He shrugged and took a sip of his klah.

"And yeah, my brother is a rider as well now." He continued. "Feast Crashers, which would have been..." He thought for a moment. "The clutch right after Padakth's actually. Now there was an interesting clutch."

Alyx didn't seem to be having any issues. She was an avid swimmer, and at home in the water. She was also a healer apprentice and used to listening for the sounds of distress. She rolled over onto her back and paused for just a moment. She was out of his reach, but was certain that he was having troubles. She looked at him carefully when he seemed to be cramping up.

"You alright?" She called out to him, while Ardy squeaked above him, reinforcing the idea that he was having troubles.

Instead, he redoubled his efforts, burning stamina in an attempt to just get close enough to Alyx to -- to grab at her ankle, and pull her back, if he could.

Then he'd surge ahead, he told himself, even as his shoulder muscle cramped up again.

T'od couldn't fault his logic, which was no surprise,so he agreed and the pair winged their way down to the lake. One of their preferred spots was already taken by a number of splashing and cavorting young dragons, so they went a little further than normal. The greenrider sputtered for a moment, the introduction he'd been working on lost for a moment.  "...my vocal green here is Aryorath."  He finished more half-heartedly in comparison to the green's.  "And I'd love a race!  As long as it's out to the waterfall!"

There were some things though that she really wasn't sure of - one of them being her. And learning healing meant she knew a little more than before. Enough to know that something wasn't quite right.

When she found a relatively quiet time, she approached one of the more senior healers for some advice. "Vashinta, mam? Do you have a little time so I could speak with you please?" she asked tentatively. This wasn't going to be easy, but it needed doing.

Ishkana nodded quickly. Yes, if she felt ill she knew where to come. "Well sort of, we always had a healer but it wasn't always the same one," she replied. "They'd come, stay a while, and then they'd go and another one came instead." She'd never stopped to consider why that was though; it was something she didn't know and she realised it troubled her.

Awsonth snorted. Surely Stakarth didn't think that she, with a much smaller mass than him, would be able to make a larger wave? But he was willing to humour her if he had to. Without another sound he dropped his full weight back into the water, sending a large wave towards the unsuspecting riders. ((There!)) he sent to Stakarth. ((Now it's your turn!))

Stakarth, well she had no such reservations and splashed right into the lake. Proud as could be. Once she was mostly submerged, a smallish blue flit appeared above the pair, chittering at both of them in a most disapproving fashion. If a dragon could be said to roll her eyes, the skinny little green did so. She ducked her head under the water and blew air out as bubbles at the scolding blue.

Teyra, who actually could, did roll her eyes, then looked over at T'od. "Yea they have all kinds of scents, even some kinda piney ones. And don't mind Lali, he's been my protector for ages and doesn't much like when Stakarth and I go getting all dirty."

T'od couldn't fault his logic, which was no surprise,so he agreed and the pair winged their way down to the lake. One of their preferred spots was already taken by a number of splashing and cavorting young dragons, so they went a little further than normal. Ishi eyed him then shrugged, "truthfully I just eat whenever I can, you never know when an emergency is going to come in." She frowned at her own words, that made her sound like she was always working, which she was, but it was only because she didn't know anyone.  "Lunch is normally larger because it's harder to sleep for me on a larger meal but it depends on shifts and stuff."

T'od liked the fact that she'd snorted instead of a titter or giggle. It made her out to be a woman who knew how to have fun, not just laugh out of politeness or in order to please. "What do you normally have for lunch?" he asked as they progressed. "D'you prefer to eat a big meal now, or later?"

An amused snort came from her as she took his arm, her gaze wandering over him before she snapped it back to the hall in front of her.  Hopefully he didn’t notice the slight flush that touched her cheeks.  Part of her couldn’t help but ponder how many times he had hit his head on his dragon but she wasn’t going to ask because that would be rude.  “Why thank you kind sir.” She smiled up  at him.

"That's it exactly!" T'od told her good-humouredly. "Please allow me, T'od of bronze Awsonth, to escort you to your meal. I'm probably just as hungry as you, and my dragon won't get any sense out of me until I have filled my belly. Of course, that works both ways too." He treated Ishi to an outrageous wink, even as he offered her his arm.

Tilting her head she rolled her eyes, then listened with her head tilted to her side.  “Exactly what am I meant to be hearing other than the fact that you probably have rock hard abs…and you are hungry maybe?”  Ishi was so going to get herself in trouble here if she didn’t learn to shut her mouth.  She had a good bedside manner she really did but she also didn’t know when to shut her mouth and he was a bronzer.  Yep he was trouble.

"Ahh now I understand," T'od was definitely amused, "Well no, I'm not hurt. It was a reaction to the collision, that's all. I'm pretty tough." And he thumped his stomach area to prove it. "Wait though... you hear that?" And he thumped his stomach again, waiting to see what her response would be.

Ishi groaned, “no I meant checking you for injuries.  I’m normally steady on my feet.”  She grinned at him, “my name is Ishixi, but people call me Ishi,” she licked her lips and a flush touched her cheek.  “You don’t have to go with me Sir, I mean, I’m sure you have better things to do.”  She paused and tried to not look up at him.  He was good looking but she wasn't going there.

She still looked a little dazed. T'od was pretty sure it wasn't his good looks that had shocked her, then her explanation made things plain. "So you run into people on a regular basis do you, journeyman?" he mused with a raised eyebrow, although the grin on his face indicated he wasn't annoyed. "By all means, as I'm headed there myself. It's this way." And he bowed to the healer, gesturing for her to walk in the direction he was originally going.

“I’m fine thanks.”  Ishi sighed and flicked her gaze to his knots before she snapped to attention.  Awesome she would have to bash straight into a bronze rider.  From her, albeit, very limited experience around some of the Weyrs she knew you had to be careful around them.  Egos and all that.  Her gaze drifted over him and she shook her head, “sorry Sir, I’m a newly transferred healer. I doubt me running into you would hurt you but it’s a habit.” She stepped out of his way so he could keep going where he was going to. “Umm do you know how I get to the dining hall? I seem to have gotten myself turned around.”  Maybe he would help her before he left.

"Yeouch!" T'od rocked back on his heels as he collided with someone. That was always the problem with corridors, there was no easy way to see round corners. The someone apologised and he looked down, seeing a woman. "Hey, my fault as well. The glows are a bit dim here aren't they?" He grinned at her; she didn't look familiar. "Are you alright?" He knew that Turns of riding Awsonth and woodcrafting before that had made him pretty solid. Perhaps not as painful to run into as a wall, but still.

Ishixi sighed as she walked through the corridors.  Apparently, this was MEANT to lead her towards the dining hall but she had an awful feeling that she had made a wrong turn somewhere along the way.  Ishi had only just moved to Arolos Weyr and was still trying to work out where she was going.  She had successfully worked out how to get to her ground weyr to the healers but other than that she was going blind.  Normally she wouldn’t even try and head to the dining hall but she was hungry and she hadn’t made herself anything.

“This is stupid.”  She muttered to herself as she rounded the corner and felt herself running into something very solid.  Well someone very solid.  “I’m so sorry.”  She flushed as she stood back and looked upwards.  Why was everyone taller than her?

Re: What's the news? (attn Ok'lin / T'od)

"Not necessarily," T'od said slowly, "I just wonder sometimes where Awsonth gets his knowledge from when it's not stuff I know. He's never been able to explain it, he just says he knows things." He laughed a little then. "It's a bit of a sod to realise that your dragon might in fact be more clever than you are..."

“I think it depends on the dragon.”  Ok’lin shrugged, “I mean they are a bit like humans, some are gossips and some just don’t like talking to others.  Zingi has never talked just for the sake of talking but I don’t know what he does when he’s blocking me out.  He rarely does it.  Only ever says it’s for my own good whatever that means.” He rolled his eyes.  “Why? You think Zingi and Awsonth are plotting to take over the Weyr?”

T'od snorted with amusement. "Yeah, I know exactly how it is, with the bronze always right..." He winked at Ok'lin, which of course Awsonth wouldn't be able to detect. "They sure are opinionated!" Although it was fair to say that some of the time Awsonth knew things he didn't, and he wasn't entirely sure how it happened. He frowned a little in thought. "Speaking of always being right, how much do you reckon the dragons talk amongst themselves?"

"You know it's been so long since I've been Okalini," Ok'lin said with a faint smile.   "I remembering thinking I had no idea, I was going to go by O'in or O'lin or something but Zingiberth decided he liked it how it is Ok'lini.  I wasn't going to argue with a newly hatched bronze dragon." This was said with some amusement.

[[Especially one that is always right]] Zingiberth reminded him.

"Sorry I was just informed that Zingi is always right so I should be thankful or something."

T'od laughed. "I wasn't kicking around the Candidate barracks for very long before Awsonth made me his. I always thought Takoda sounded a bit girly, so changing it to just T'od made a whole heap of sense. One syllable, nothing remotely feminine about it." He turned the question around. "How did you decide what to elide your name to?"

“At least she cared right?” Ok’lin pointed out, “I mean sure that would of annoyed me as well but at least she cared.”  His mother had died very young and his father had never really cared so he had missed that parent figure in his life.  “I’m glad she was wrong as well.”  He nodded because he believed everyone needed a dragon in their life and he didn’t understand anyone that refused the search tokens that were given out.  “Takoda huh? I never knew your name before you impressed.”

T'od's laugh was rueful. "Much as I loved my mother, she did love to rub it in if I fecked up, especially if she'd advised me not to do something. I can still hear her voice sometimes 'Takoda, I warned you that would happen... Didn't I say it?' and other such things like that. Really pisses a young man off, y'know? Especially one who's old enough to marry or be a Senior Apprentice by that time. Clearly she thought because she had *told* me it would go wrong, that would be enough to stop me doing it. I don't really think it ever occurred to her that I would want to find out for myself." His gaze was distant as he spoke, but then he focused on Ok'lin's face. "The one time she didn't get to say she told me so was after I was Searched, and came here to Impress Awsonth. She thought it was all a waste of time and I'd never Impress. I'm glad she was wrong."

Ok’lin looked at him curiously, “what hard way?”  Admittedly when he was younger and he had never gotten to really know the other riders, even the Weyrlings in his own hatching group, but as he got older he realised people were actually….interesting.  Each story was unique and he was enjoying puzzling it out.  Why not start with a friend?

T'od chuckled in agreement. "Same here, the more someone tells me no... Well you're right. From what I understand that's pretty much all you can do as a parent - give advice and be there. And try not to tell them 'I told you so' if they don't take your advice and feck up." Slightly quieter, he concluded, "I learned that one from my mother. The hard way." He returned the salute, taking a deep gulp of his klah. "Well we try, but there are some things they have to learn for themselves."

Ok’lin shrugged his shoulders, “just have to hope it doesn’t come to that.  I can’t tell him what to do now.  He grew up as Weyrbrat so it’s not like I can go oh I want you to not do that.”  He frowned a little.  “The more my father,” he said the name with some distaste, “told me to do something the more I dug my heels in.   Besides even if he stands it doesn’t mean he’ll impress.  Either way all I can do is give him advice and be there for him.”  Picking up his klah he gave T’od a salute, “besides that means he’ll have good guidance in people like you yeah?”

T'od concurred. "I guess you can't. It's not like he's not aware of the risks. But... I don't know... I think if I had a child I would prefer them to be in a less dangerous occupation. And of course there's the possibility of ending up dragonless, and only half-alive..." A far-from-cheery thought but one that had to be faced. There were a few dragonless folk around the Weyr and T'od couldn't even begin to comprehend his life without Awsonth in it.

Re: A Walk to Remember Alyx/Any

Swimming across a lake after running around it for the better part of the last two hours was a bad idea, Asheran realised belatedly. His lungs were already burning, and his muscles pulled at each stroke, even as he fell into more of a rhythm - not graceful, still, but less frenzied, if only due to his growing weariness. His shoulder twinged, and he inhaled water as he cramped, yelping mutedly into the cool water, then resurfaced like a whale - blowing water vigorously out of his mouth and nose, checking to see how far ahead the young woman had gotten. And she had pulled ahead. He might have the advantage of muscles, and his masculine physique, but he had been pushing himself for weeks now, every day, and now here he was.

Well, he wasn't going to lose. He refused.

Instead, he redoubled his efforts, burning stamina in an attempt to just get close enough to Alyx to -- to grab at her ankle, and pull her back, if he could.

Then he'd surge ahead, he told himself, even as his shoulder muscle cramped up again.
