Re: Cloud Dancers Wing Assistant Interviews (wL S'ryll, Qabil)

S'ryll head the knock, his next interview no doubt. He looked up from his notes, called for the person to enter, and slowly appraised the individual coming in. This one was an older woman -- not old, but older than him -- dressed in decent clothing, albeit wrinkled. Based upon her dress and lack of wingknots, combined with her age, she must be a Weyrworker. Which was interesting because she had a bronze flitter curled around her neck. How had a Weyrworker gotten a bronze egg? There was likely a story in there, given bronze flits weren't easy to come by or cheap.
"Good day to you. I'm wingleader S'ryll of Bronze Vastolth."
Vastolth was sleeping right now, disinterested in these boring
interviews when none of the people were about to bathe him. "Please
have a seat," he said, indicating a chair in front of his desk. "Tell
me your name and why you're applying to be my assistant," he said, not
wasting time with pleasantries when he had so many to get through.<<

"Hello sir." Qabil offered words slightly slow even on just a
greeting, like she had to think about them a bit or they were
carefully chosen. She settled in the offered chair Quite not even
shifting showing just how long she had had him that they were well
used to how each other moved. "My name is Qabil." She introduced as
she considered the actual reason "I always wanted to learn a craft
when I was younger, but no one would let me apprentice or teach me. I
work with the laundry mostly now, but I like to do other things and
can do other things. Was even a live in nanny for G'rod when he was a
wingsecond to watch his son Ghyan. Also since I only work in the
laundry there is no other craft or classes or anything I have to
attend so would have extra time to commit if ever needed."

S'ryll didn't miss the beautiful young blonde woman that walked in his door when he answered it.  She had an angular face, blonde hair pulled back, and beautiful eyes.  Yet her appearance, unlike Ysolde, was very much one of a young woman who didn't care about how attractive she was.  She wore her prettiness with an air of casual indifference, not unlike himself.  Until he opened his mouth and his arrogance came out anyways.  Despite his dalliance with Ysolde, he had no desire to make a habit of bedding Candidates, and he wondered how it would be to see this one daily.  Would he be able to resist the temptation?

"Good day to you, Candidate Calyse.  I'm wingleader S'ryll of Bronze Vastolth."  Vastolth was sleeping right now, disinterested in these boring interviews when none of the people were about to bathe him.  "Please have a seat," he said, indicating a chair in front of his desk, before sitting in his own.  "So, Calyse, why you're applying to be my assistant," he said, not wasting time with pleasantries when he had so many to get through.

S'ryll noted the distance the young man stopped away from him, the crafter ranking, and the stuck out hand.  And at the impertinence, S'ryll raised an eyebrow.  "Good day to you, Sr. App. Candidate Asheran.  I'm wingleader S'ryll of Bronze Vastolth."  Vastolth was sleeping right now, disinterested in these boring interviews when none of the people were about to bathe him.  Which also meant that S'ryll wasn't pressured to introduce him as the "great Vastolth."  The boy had a confidence about him, and he reminded him slightly of himself at a younger age.  S'ryll reached out and gave the other's a firm handshake before continuing on.

"Please have a seat," he said, indicating a chair in front of his desk.  "So, Asheran, why you're applying to be my assistant," he said, not wasting time with pleasantries when he had so many to get through, even if this was his first.

S'ryll looked up at the knock on his door.  There were an unexpected number of applicants, and he was slightly surprised at the response.  He called out to have the person enter, noting the young man that entered.  Based on his appearance, S'ryll identified him to be a candidate and a crafter.  He nodded his head in greeting.

S'ryll had posted notices up around the Weyr. He was looking for an assistant to help out with the administrative tasks of the wing, some hide copying, ensuring that the files were neatly organized, update the calendar, and preferably, to have fresh klah in the mornings. He was sure there would be other tasks, but these were what he could think of now. He liked the idea of a potential hopeful Rider filling the role, as a kind of mentorship opportunity, so he'd gone and spoken with CM Nayari to make sure that he had her approval before allowing Candidates to interview. That being said, at the end of the day, he cared most about getting things done, and if a young Candidate benefited as well, then all the better. But he'd hold open interviews for anyone that wanted. He remembered a grizzled old Rider back at HR, a man who'd been around for ages but had been injured Turns prior. He and his dragon were far too old to do much, but the man had been full of so much knowledge and ideas. They used to talk for candlemarks at dinners some sevendays. He'd take someone like that in a heartbeat as well.
So he'd posted an interview sign-up sheet with time blocks, and today
was the day. He waited inside his office for the first one...<<

Since her stint with G'rod and his son Ghyan Qabil had been shuffled
back off to the laundry. It wasn't that she hadn't expected it more
just that she had enjoyed her time as being a live in nanny for the
Wingsecond. Ghyan was well into candidacy though now and she was well
beyond not needed. Still such an add did get her attention for such
reasons. She didn't mind her task, but she could do more.

Qabil passed the note a couple more times during the day before
finally signing up, her writing looking like a young child's with her
letters being all block uppercase to allow her to be able to more
easily write things somewhat properly.

The day turned out to be one of her rest days so it wasn't hard to be
where she needed to be, though her uniform and over all appearance
didn't say rest day. She wasn't ragged by any means, but her clothes
clearly had some wrinkles and her hair was well a bit fluffy and all
over the place, again not dirty or anything of the sort more just in
need of her catching that it needed at least her fingers run though
it.

The note hadn't said anything about pets so the drudge didn't bother
to leave Quite behind and and instead the bronze was settled primly on
her shoulder his tail around her neck as she knocked on the door. It
was still hard to try and go to speak to a male alone on purpose, but
it was much easier than it had once been and she had like the change
when she helped G'rod. So maybe again?

Jerwain had actually paused when he spotted the notice and considered
it for a long moment. He was well past the initial classes and had
been doing rather well in his craft, but he could definitely use a bit
extra to do, or rather knew he could handle a bit extra to do. It had
honestly been so quite here without having to look after his cousins,
siblings, or the other younger members that he could honestly use
something like this. So with all that in mind he had signed up for the
chance.

Once it was time he made a point to look his best and show up exactly
on time and knocked on the Wingleader's door.

Lakeside to the Danger Zone ((Attn: Marsali, Rosk))

Rosiegirl

One morning, not long after the twin golden eggs were Clutched, before heading to her morning chores, Marsali was pulled aside by one of the candidatemasters and told that for her afternoon chores after lunch she was assigned to report to the lake to assist with bathing Bluerider Rosk's Fephumith. She'd thanked the candidatemaster for the heads up, so that she could be prepared and wearing either clothes she didn't mind getting wet/smeared with oil, or be in her swimsuit, and quickly headed off to her morning chores.

The hours quickly passed, as they do for candidates who are *so* busy after a Clutching with additional lessons and activities, and soon it was after lunch. Marsali, in order to prepare for her afternoon chores, had taken the time before lunch to braid her hair up out of the way and get changed into her swimsuit (a solid blue 2 piece halter top bikini-style outfit that tied behind her neck) and then put a light, nearly sheer wrap tied low around her hips. She'd taken care to eat a light lunch that wouldn't sit too heavy on her stomach, and then headed out of the Dining Hall a little early, carrying her towel and with her sandals making a small 'flapping' sound against the stone as she walked. She hoped that she'd have time to get back to the barracks a little bit before the afternoon lessons to be able to change back into her candidate uniform.

So, arriving at the lake a bit early, Marsali began to look for Rosk and his blue, remembering the blond-haired rider from the times she'd seen him and briefly interacted with him at the beastcrafter's area.

Re: Lunch For Two! (atten: Ko'ssen)

The slightly scuffed 'kicking' knock that was made on his door, followed by the called out words, pulled Ko'ssen out of what he'd been writing and up out of his chair immediately despite the surprise of the visit *and* lunch delivery. Calling out "I'm coming to get the door!" as he made his way quickly around the desk, in a few quick steps Ko'ssen was swinging open the door. Even though surprise was clear on his face, Ko'ssen smiled welcomingly at the AWLM as soon as the door swung open, but upon seeing AWLM J'zat holding two trays of food Ko'ssen quickly offered "Here, let me take one of those from you!" as he reached out to take one, if the AWLM let him.

He also stepped aside, giving J'zat space with the trays to walk into the room as he said "Thank you for bringing lunch, AWLM J'zat. I didn't realize it was mid-day already." With a glance from his hide-shrewn desk to the couch with it's low coffee table, Ko'ssen still figured the desk would be better and offered. "Give me a second to clear some space and we can eat at the desk."

"Yes, I know."

Arriving at the Weyrling Master's door, hands full, J'zat kicked lightly at it instead. "AWLM J'zat here with lunch sir!"

A Few Of My Favorite Things ((Attn: Andreya, Trifali))

Rosiegirl

Andreya had been a bit shaken by the ending to the Gather, but she was back in the now familiar Candidate barracks and she'd already checked on her mom by flit to find out that her mom had made it home safely. So she was slowly relaxing again due to the routine of being a candidate with the classes, chores, studying and everything else, despite the worry she now felt toward her cousin's safety.

It was actually in the free time hours after dinner, just a few days after the Gather, when she was studying in her favorite smaller, lesser used study room in the nook she'd claimed. Both her flits were with her because they sensed that their person was still unsettled, Ellysetta draped over Andreya's knees under the table and Colzar perched on the back of the chair she was sitting in as if he was standing sentry.

In front of Andreya was spread out her study materials, and her head was bent over the hides with her damp hair loose and flowing over her shoulders. After her bath after dinner, instead of her candidate uniform she'd dressed in more casual, relaxed clothing very much not her typical style...an outfit that would be more likely considered loungewear with her flowy, light blouse and loose wrap skirt that hung down to her knees at its highest point in an asymmetrical hemline.

Re: Gather: Tailor Stall (Attn: Bronwynn, Z'rain)

As he smiled to reassure her, and said that he really was doing good Wynn couldn't quite keep the slightly skeptical and concerned look off her face completely. Still, she let him believe she was reassured, for the moment, and nodded as she responded with "Well, it doesn't all just fall on you to visit. I could work on visiting Igen more with Wysin, and I'm sorry I haven't. I really should visit you more there, see what or *who* keeps you living there." As she said the 'who', Wynn couldn't help the small grin she gave her brother, even as the grin showed there were truly no hard feelings that he'd chosen not to move to Arolos and be closer to her.

After that grin, she continued with "But seeing you more, whether here or at Igen, wouldn't go amiss. Otherwise, Wysin might suddenly be 12 turns old and doing...who knows what craft or life path after the creche!" With that last bit, Wynn let a bit more of the previous mock horror leak into her voice at imagining her little boy being 12 turns old!

"More than one who, actually," said Z'rain. He blushed. Even after all these Turns, there was still enough Fort in him that it was difficult to talk about things that would have seen him beaten or worse there. Things that made him happy. "If it were only one, it might be easier to convince them to move, but... they've all got family at Igen, too, so... you understand. I hope."

"Anyway, I would absolutely love to try on something new."

Re: Gather: Tailor Stall (Attn: Bronwynn, Z'rain)

Bronwynn couldn't help the happy smile as Z'rain said he was here to see her and her son, and that he'd spent time with her for most of the day. Even if that meant that she didn't get to help as many potential customers with him hanging around her stall, she didn't care at the moment. With a grin, Bronwynn replied with "Well, before you go poke around somewhere else let's see if I have something new you'd like to wear. I might have something that you'd like in that lighter fabric I was talking about, to see what you think of it?" It also wouldn't hurt to have him showing off her clothing as he wandered the Gather, but that was a lesser concern of hers.

As he smiled to reassure her, and said that he really was doing good Wynn couldn't quite keep the slightly skeptical and concerned look off her face completely. Re: Clutching Time: attn Nyzara / C'lynx

Jessica Freise

Nyzara was in her office. Not for work, but because Tyne's advice had prooven true: the gold had come to recognize the small corner allotted to her nest as *her* safe place. When she had first stirred on Nyzara's desk, the Mindhealer had started, lost in her own thoughts.

There was a low grunt from the gravid Queen and then a demanding muzzle in her face. She felt her heartbeat pick up and her lips curve as the Queen let her "see" eggs and a familiar bronze and man.

"Come here, sweetheart, we'll get you settled and ready to clutch. I'm right here," she crooned, lifing the gold and moving towards the area she'd set up for her even as a knock sounded on her door.

"Come in, C'lynx," she called, grinning hugely in what she hoped was his direction as she heard Brahn chitter and Flare chatter back.

On Aug 1, 2020, at 6:30 AM, kepheren <kepheren@...> wrote:

The day after flying thread was always something of a treat for C'lynx.  First off there was the simple joy of still being alive and not injured all to hell and back in the infirmary. Having had that experience a couple of times made the young bronze rider appreciate life all the more. Then there was the fact that the day after was generally a rest day and he could always appreciate that. Today didn't seem to be any different so he was settling in with the intent of doing absolutely nothing for awhile and just decompress. Brahn however had other ideas. The little bronze suddenly perked up from where he was dozing and began darting all over their weyr having a fit about something.

"What's gotten into you?" he asked, a bit irritated and more than a little puzzled.

In response he got an earful of chatter, several mental images of Flare and Nyzara and then the little bronze was out the door in a flash with an urgent demand that he be followed. C'lynx watched the receding image for a moment before giving chase. Maybe it was time for the gold flit to clutch? That would make sense. And he did want to see Nyzara again. Without a second thought he hopped up and went to follow. If nothing else he couldn't let Brahn run loose when he was in a mood like that. No telling what mischief he would start.

"Slow down you little trouble maker. I'm right behind you."

And so they were off to goodness only knew where hoping that Brahn had a better idea than his human pet did.

We *Are* Family! (Pt. 4) ((JP: Andreya, Shalia))

Rosiegirl

Shalia giggled as she passed a towel.  Like human, like flit, sometimes!  "Then you should probably clean her first and let her get her beauty sleep.  Not that she needs the beauty part of it, of course!" she added, smiling at the pretty little green.  "Want me to take him so you can get up?" she asked, readying a couple more towels for the flits once Andreya got her hands more or less clean, suspecting neither Candidate nor green would want to use a dirty towel for that.  The bronze might not care (especially now that he was unconscious), but the girl still would.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya dipped her head in thanks for the towel as she wiped her hands off thoroughly replying in agreement with a smile “Yes, that makes the most sense.” Andreya’s eyes moved to the green when, in response to Shalia’s compliment, the sleepy green gave an adorable, drowsy croon of happiness to Shalia. Then the green *sharing* that happiness to both Andreya and Shalia with an image of how the green envisioned her ‘grand entrance’ *should* have gone, with the almost white, pale green looking completely perfectly clean as she preened with wings spread as the top of the egg shell had been removed (instead of covered in egg-yuck and sand) and the praise she’d believed she’d have gotten at her planned entrance.

Andreya, feeling an undercurrent of sadness from her green that her entrance hadn’t been like that, was quick to reassure the green with “You still made an impression on us, you pretty girl!” As she reassured her green Andreya used the same towel she’d used on her hands to attempt to get the worst of the yuck off her skirt, she didn’t want anything falling off her skirt when she stood up, after all.

At Shalia’s question, seeing the other girl preparing other towels, Andreya investigated her bond with the bronze to see *how* deep asleep he was to make sure he might not wake up if Shalia picked him up, not wanting him to bite Shalia or something if he *did* wake up and was unhappy. At feeling that he was well and truly unconscious, Andreya grinned at Shalia saying “Yes, that would be great. He’s totally out, as far as I can feel.”

Taking one of the towels from Shalia, Andreya carefully wrapped up the limp bronze in the towel before holding him up for Shalia to take. The bronze, while he was getting shifted around, was totally dead to the world and didn’t make even a small noise of complaint at the movement.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia blinked at the shared image, not in the slightest expecting it, but hastened to add her reassurances.  "Yes, you did… although more of an Impression on Andreya," she couldn't help adding with a chuckle.  "How 'bout if we tell everyone that's what happened, little one?" she suggested.

"Great," she responded to Andreya while getting back up to her feet while the other girl bundled the bronze up.  She draped a towel for the green on Andreya's shoulder, then squatted down and reached for the bundle, carefully holding him close as she rose once more, making sure not to jostle him just in case he wasn't quite as dead to the world as he appeared.  "Will you be able to stand up with her?"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Her own soft laugh followed Shalia’s comment as Andreya looked lovingly down at her green. At Shalia’s suggestion, the green tilted her head to the side, clearly considering the idea, before she gave a dip of her head and a soft chirp of agreement. As far as the green was concerned now, with the agreement between the three of them (ignoring the fact that *that bronze* had clearly seen what her entrance had really been like), that *was* how things had happened.

Andreya felt the towel Shalia laid on her shoulder after the shorter girl stood up while the harper-candidate worked to bundle up the bronze carefully. Passing over the larger, towel-wrapped bronze bundle so very carefully when Shalia squatted down for him, Andreya waited until the other girl had stood smoothly back up before daring to move.

At Shalia’s question, after feeling that the bronze was still deep asleep, Andreya glanced down at the tiny green sitting up on her leg and nodded saying “Yeah, I should be fine with just her.” With that, Andreya took the towel and instead of laying it down on her skirt, which was still a bit gross despite her attempts, Andreya asked the green politely “May I?” At the green’s chip of agreement, Andreya carefully bundled the green flit in the clean towel, positioning the green so she’s still be able to see out, and then after a moment Andreya adjusted her hold on the tiny green and slowly began to get up off the floor, glad that her feet hadn’t fallen asleep sitting there.

Standing upright, holding the green close to her, Andreya glanced around at all the things she had laying around...the pots with their shell pieces, her study materials laid out on the stable by the couch, and finally the bag full of ‘flit materials’ that she’d gathered together. Finally she looked at Shalia holding the sleeping bronze and said consideringly “Well, I suppose we really only need to bring the ‘flit materials’ bag with us...the rest should be fine here until we return.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia laughed at the green, gently though, like they were sharing a joke.  "That's how it happened then," she affirmed.  "Nobody will ever hear otherwise from me!"

The petite redhead cuddled the sleeping bronze, rocking him and crooning gently, much like she would for one of her babies, figuring that there wasn't that much difference between them right now… although she wasn't about to offer to feed this particular baby!  Shalia mostly held him in one arm, ready to reach out to steady Andreya if needed (sitting on a stone floor was a good way to put limbs to sleep, after all!) but her assistance wasn't required.

She nodded her agreement at the other girl's comment.  "Yeah, doubt anybody will touch things.  Want him back, and I'll grab the bag?"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya grinned at Shalia’s words, but added her own affirmation of ‘the story’ to the green saying “Nor from me!” The green, satisfied with both their replies, gave a happy croon as she settled more comfortably into the towel Andreya had wrapped around her.

At Shalia’s agreement and then question, Andreya nodded saying “Yes, that works.” Carefully shifting the green around to be cradled close to her body with one arm so that the other was free to carry the bronze, Andreya stepped closer to the shorter candidate and posed herself for the flit handoff.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia stepped close, being careful not to get egg goo from Andreya's clothes onto her uniform, and passed him over, making sure the other girl had a good hold before pulling her own arms away. "There you go, little guy, back to your person," she murmured, giving the bundle a little pat before offering a headscritch to the sleepy green.

Having given the newborn flit her due, Shalia grabbed the bag and headed towards the nearest bathing pool.  "C'mon, the sooner she's properly clean, the sooner she can join her brother in a nap."

Once there, she wasted no time setting the bag down and getting the supplies out.  "Mmm, should be enough," she decided after considering them for a moment, then started undoing the laces of her corset.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya, as Shalia stepped closer, was also careful not to shift too much and get the other girl dirty. Carefully taking the bronze and towel bundle from Shalia and holding him close to her, feeling the pair of flits in her arms, Andreya looked down between them for a moment admiring them and loving them both (even the bronze who had shown just how much trouble he would be) already. As she settled the bronze against her, Andreya smiled down at the male flit and crooned to the baby “You’re so adorable when you’re sleeping, handsome.”

When Shalia reached over to scratch the sleepy green’s head, the flit arched her head into the scritches and gave a soft, happy rumble as her eyes half-closed in pleasure. Then watching as Shalia grabbed up the bag, Andreya quickly managed to get her heels on enough to walk in them, knowing she’d need to be careful of the ribbons with her not taking the time to get those tied up her ankle. Andreya nodded silently in agreement feeling how much of a struggle it was for the green to be keeping herself awake and  followed Shalia making every effort to keep her movements smooth and even.

Reaching the bathing pool, waiting as Shalia settled the bag down and began to empty things out of it, as the other girl confirmed that there should be enough there Andreya let out a relieved breath saying softly “Wonderful!” As Shalia began to undo her corset laces, Andreya walked over and bent to set the bronze on a bench by the wall. Once that arm was free, she reassured the green “We’ll get you clean very soon, bright eyes. We’re just about to head into the pool.” With that, she placed the green on the bench next to the sleeping bronze and began to undo her own corset too. The corset hadn’t gotten *quite* as gross as her skirt, but it would still need to be laundered before it could be worn again.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia quickly stripped out of her clothes, leaving them in a neat (for her, at least; Andreya may have thought otherwise) pile on another bench.  She showed as little concern as ever in getting naked in front of Andreya, though she was wondering how the other girl would feel, given their newfound cousinship.

She arranged the supplies near the edge of the pool, grabbing a few towels and placing them nearby, so they could dry off the flits before oiling them.  This done, she slipped into the pool with a contented sigh, taking a moment to just relax in the warm water.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Getting out of the corset quickly and, purely out of habit, folding it nicely on the bench before even thinking about it, Andreya removed her heels being careful not to touch them with her hands and then unbuttoned the skirt in the back and let it fall to the floor. Moving the skirt with her foot, making sure the gross fabric did *not* touch her shoes, Andreya left the skirt in a pile on the floor by the bench. Now in just the light, flowing white shirt, breast band, and panties, Andreya carefully scooped up first the green and then the bronze in each arm with their towels.

Turning toward the pool, Andreya bent down and laid the bronze in his towel nest next to the materials at the edge of the pool, letting the bronze sleep while taking care of the green who was still struggling masterfully to stay awake. Not even bothering to unwrap the towel from the green, Andreya walked into the bath pool with the green, letting out a pleased sigh as the warm water lapped over her feet. As she joined Shalia in the pool, she was careful to let her eyes just glance over the other girl’s nakedness without really seeing, this was her near-cousin now, after all.

As she got deeper in the water and the light, flowy white shirt she’d previously been wearing under the corset got soaked, it ended up not only plastering itself to Andreya’s body, but the material itself went fairly see-through from the water showing everything underneath the fabric. But Andreya’s focus wasn’t on herself but on getting both the flits properly cleaned and oiled.

Giving a small flip of her head to settle her sideways braid, the longer part which was now wet, against her back instead of tickling her collarbone, Andreya finally lowered the green wrapped in it’s towel (which she’d been holding up enough to keep clear of the water) into the water. The green gave a sleepy trill of happiness at the feel of the warm water soaking into the towel, and Andreya walked over to the edge with their materials were and after unwrapping the green finally, carefully holding her close, Andreya put the soaked, dirty towel on the edge of the bath pool.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia chuckled softly to herself upon realizing the other girl was planning on staying mostly dressed, although she figured it was as much to get the flits clean as soon as possible as a sudden attack  of shyness around her new near-cousin who'd expressed clear signs of attraction towards her.  Not that staying clothed really did any good if that had been a consideration!

"I think she likes that," she commented with a grin at the green's happy sound.  Shalia moved up next to the pair, ready to hand Andreya supplies as needed.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Turning back to Shalia, now with just the green flit in her arms without the towel, at the other girl’s comment Andreya nodded saying “Yes, she does. I can feel how happy it’s making her.” Supporting the green flit so that she was almost entirely underwater (except her head) Andreya carefully splashed some water over the green’s head after giving her a mental warning, which the green responded to with a sleepy chirp. With the green totally wetted down now, Andreya then lifted her and, using the soapsand Shalia handed her (with a “Thank you!” to the other girl), began to scrub the tiny green down. She was thorough, washing each expanse of hide and each of the flit’s joints as she gave the green first one scrub all over and then a rinse before getting a bit more soapsand and giving the tiny green flit another whole thorough scrub down. Even still, a double wash and rinse of the so tiny newborn green didn’t take *too* long comparatively.

Still, by the time she was finished and the green herself actually *felt* clean, she was nearly comatose in Andreya’s arms, unable to force herself to stay awake after that first scrub which had gotten all the initial egg-yuck and sand off of her. Smiling down at the sleeping green, Andreya glanced up at Shalia saying in an amused whisper “Well, she put up a good fight to stay awake actually. What do you think?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"She's even prettier all cleaned off," Shalia said admiringly after the first scrub and rinse. The green's proportions had been fairly obvious, but the coloring was far more obvious now.  "I don't think I've ever seen a green this pale before!"  Well, not since those parasites, at least, but her brother was clearly not pale, so she wasn't worried about a resurgence of them; the little flit was apparently just naturally a very pale green.

Shalia giggled in response to Andreya's question. "Yeah, she did.  Stubborn little thing."  There was admiration in her voice, though, not any kind of condemnation.  She could respect someone wanting to enjoy a good bath!  She passed a towel to Andreya to dry the flit off.  "You should probably oil her on one of the benches," she suggested.  Not that she really thought the other girl needed the suggestion, but it was good to be sure.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

At Shalia’s compliment of the green, Andreya actually took a moment to pull her out of the focus of ‘get flit clean!’ to really *look* at the flit. And when she did, her breath caught in her throat a moment as she stared down at the nearly white flit in her hands. She’d never seen a green flit *this* pale as to look white in some places. And, beyond her color the shape of the newborn flit was so delicate and lithe...and with the just slight brush of only slightly darker pale, mint green on her cheeks and her eyes and a few other places...this green looked absolutely gorgeous! Finally pulling in a breath, Andreya replied with “She’s stunning! So beautiful. And I’ve never seen one this pale either, but it works for her. She’s going to stand out and catch people’s attention, that’s for sure. But I’m sure she’ll love that, based on how she’s behaved already.”

Moving to slightly more shallow water, Andreya took the towel and began to carefully dry off the green flit. At Shalia’s suggestion, Andreya glanced between the green flit who was, at least, now clean and the bronze who still needed its bath. Trying to decide if she should go right to oiling the green or if she should bathe the bronze first before then moving to the bench to oil both flits back to back, Andreya finally asked “Think, if I let her lay curled up on her towel at the edge of the pool...that it would be ok if I got him bathed before we oiled both flits? Or, should I get right to oiling her as soon as she’s dried off?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Yeah, she doesn't seem like a wallflower to me," Shalia agreed with a chuckle.

"Oil her first," she responded to the other girl's question without hesitation.  "It's kinda odd, but washing actually dries out their hide.  When she's full-grown you'll be able to get away with some time between washing and oiling, but not this age.  He'll be better with the egg goo than she will without the oiling."  Of course, technically speaking, she could probably either wash the bronze or oil the green, now that they were both Impressed and asleep, but she thought it was important for Andreya to do it for the first time.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya nodded in fervent agreement to Shalia’s wallflower comment, but at the immediate response to her question Andreya nodded and headed toward the bath pool’s exit, shirt plastered to her skin as she left the water and only falling right at hip level. The white, wet fabric did nothing to hide Andreya’s body shape with the way it clung to her as she moved out of the pool and to the bench.

Carrying the green over to the bench, after grabbing the towels and oil from next to the pool, Andreya sat down, crossed her legs, and laid the flit down on a towel across her legs. She carefully but thoroughly dried the green flit off before she began oiling the nearly white green flit...and saw the way her hide almost looked to shimmer. Her hands slowed down a little as she looked down at the flit, trying to figure out if it was the oil, the light, or even actually her hide itself. Continuing to oil the green being very careful not to miss any spot, Andreya glanced up at Shalia and said just loud enough for the other girl to hear “Shalia..she looks like she’s shimmering with the oil.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia stayed in the pool a bit longer, and if she took a few moments to admire the way her newfound near-cousin's wet shirt clung to her… well, it certainly wasn't the first time, and it likely wouldn't be the last, at least as long as Andreya didn't exhibit discomfort.  But when the taller Candidate reached for the oil pot, she got out and padded over to the bench.  She briefly considered resuming her supervisory stance against the other girl's back, but given their state of attire decided against it.  Instead Shalia sat to the side, dropping a towel in her own lap, ready to give pointers and suggestions if needed.  Andreya had oiled Noctis, but a full-grown flit who could direct attention to itchy spots was a different enough proposition from a slumbering hatchling receiving her first oiling that she wanted to be sure.

"They do that when oiled," she teased, but then conceded, "although maybe not quite this much."  She moved her head from side to side watching the reflecting glows change.  "Wow, her hide almost looks pure white from this angle!"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya, with Shalia having been behind her as well as being too focused on the flit in her hands, of course had not noticed in the slightest the shorter candidate checking her out as she walked to the bench. And yes, as she oiled the sleeping green it was a very different experience from having oiled Noctis the few times she had, so she was glad when Shalia (despite the other candidate being *very naked*) came and sat on the bench beside her to make sure she didn’t miss any spots.

At the initial tease from Shalia, Andreya rolled her eyes slightly as she glanced up, specifically to Shalia’s face, and gave the other girl a look of ‘I *know* that.’. But then Shalia continued, admitting that they didn’t normally shimmer quite *this* much. Turning to focus back on the flit in her hands for a moment, at Shalia’s last comment Andreya nodded her head even as she looked just a little bit worried saying “She really does! So pale a green she looks white, and shimmery too…Do you think she’s...ok? That seems very unusual.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia considered the question thoughtfully.  "I don't think so," she said after a few moments.  "Several Turns ago there were parasites that turned dragons pale like this, but your bronze seems to be fine, so it's probably not that, I don't think."  That parasite had affected all the hatchlings in a clutch, not just one.  She gave a shrug, unconcerned about the effect that had on certain portions of her bare anatomy.  "It might not hurt to have a Dragonhealer look her over, to be safe, but I think she's just naturally very light-colored."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As Shalia talked about the parasites turning dragons white, Andreya did think she remembered hearing something about that so she nodded slowly at the other girl’s information. Still looking down at the flit, being careful to oil the flits wing-joints, Andreya didn’t notice Shalia’s shrug. To her last suggestion though, Andreya nodded in agreement saying “I’ll do that...Hopefully tonight instead of waiting until tomorrow.”

Andreya’s hands were still moving and oiling, carefully turning the baby girl this way and that to get every spot. Soon, she was finishing up and the oil was glistening all over the flit’s shimmering nearly white looking hide. Settling the flit back down on the towel in her lap, Andreya stroked the green’s narrow head and turned her head up to look at Shalia saying with a smile “Alright, I think she’s good, well perfect and beautiful, now.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia watched carefully as Andreya oiled the green, making the occasional sound of approval to let her know she was doing a good job.  She considered how the flit might be diagnosed; parasites in animals were generally diagnosed from their excrement, which also would work with baby dragons, but these flits would be going between for that pretty much immediately.  She made a mental note to track down the other hatchlings just to be safe; if they were normal, like the bronze, it was likely just natural coloration.  But as she'd just said, it wouldn't hurt to check.

As Andreya finished, Shalia gave her a smile.  "That was perfect!  You'll have to do it fairly often while they're growing, but you're doing it exactly right."  She looked down at the tiny green nestled on the towel in the other girl's lap and gave another smile.  Babies of any species were always adorable (well, as long as you didn't have to clean up after them, at least!) but this exquisite little creature was possibly on another level entirely.  "She certainly is beautiful," she agreed.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya appreciated Shalia giving hints of approval as she worked to oil the green flit for the first time. Focused on the oiling, Andreya wasn’t analyzing how the healers might diagnose or examine her green for any problems. That wasn’t on her mind at all, although she would most likely begin thinking about that as she was heading to the Dragonhealers.

Straightening up, careful of the flit, Andreya glanced over and smiled at her near-cousin saying “Thank you! And yes, she is and she very much knows it.” Andreya took another moment to admire the green in her lap before pulling herself away and beginning to carefully shift the green, bundling up the towel around her, and placing the curled up flit gently on the bench. Standing up as carefully as possible, possibly even putting her fabric plastered chest in an even more obvious location for Shalia, even though nothing she was doing had any chance of pulling the green out of her food coma. As she stood and stretched slightly Andreya said “Alright, now for that handsome bronze over there.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia chuckled at Andreya's comment about the green knowing she was beautiful; that was fairly obvious from the way she'd wanted to enter the world.  When the other girl stood up, she gave a longing look at the bathing pool.  She'd been gone far longer than expected, and as much as she wanted to stay, duty called.

"I really should get back to work," she said reluctantly, bringing her towel up to wrap around her still-wet hair.  "And you clearly know what you're doing," she added in an encouraging tone with a smile as she stood up.  "Just do the same thing with him as you did her, and you'll be fine."

Shalia hesitated briefly, considering their current state of undress, and then gave a mental shrug.  There wouldn't really be an opportunity to give the taller Candidate a hug once she was dressed, and she'd been wanting to do that since finding out who her father was.  She stepped in close and threw her arms around Andreya.  "And welcome to the family!"

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya had just been about to turn and walk over to the pool entrance when Shalia’s reluctantly said comment reached her ears. Turning back to her near-cousin, focusing on her face, Andreya watched as Shalia wrapped a towel around her hair and nodded understandingly to the other candidate having to leave. The words of encouragement earned Shalia a smile and a firm nod before Andreya said “Of course, I understand work. I didn’t mean to hold you up from getting back for so long, please apologize for me. And thank you, so much, for all the help with the both of them. This, on top of the earlier news...yeah, I was still a bit in shock with everything.”

And then before she could say any more, Shalia was stepping close and wrapping her arms around Andreya, still *only* wearing a towel in her hair and nothing else. Andreya froze out of reflex for a moment, feeling Shalia’s body pressed against hers with Andreya’s clothes soaked and Shalia’s clothes gone. But a very short instant later, Andreya’s brain caught up with the hug from her near-cousin and she wrapped her own arms around Shalia. Trying to downplay the sudden nervousness she felt (entirely at the idea of meeting the rest of the family, really...) even though she couldn’t help that her cheeks were now bright pink Andreya said “Thank you! I’m sure over the next few days I’ll be meeting lots of new family.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"I'm really glad I was able to be there to help, and watch," Shalia said with a smile. "I can't even imagine what it must be like to suddenly find out you have a whole big family!"  It was a big enough shock for her learning she had a new cousin, but to meet your father after over seventeen Turns and learn about cousins, and kids of cousins (although two were actually technically a niece and nephew, weren't they?)... Andreya suddenly had a whole family, and two baby flits to boot…

"I could stick around longer if you need, or even just want, to talk some more," she offered after releasing the taller girl from the hug.  She hadn't missed the way Andreya had stiffened up, though Shalia wasn't sure whether it was the nudity involved with another girl, another girl who had shown interest, or her newfound cousin who had shown interest.  Probably should have wrapped the towel around her body instead, especially since she'd need to dry off again after hugging Andreya in her still-rather-wet shirt anyway.  Oh well.  "I'm sure R'tal would understand," she continued her verbal train of thought.  Even if the man did seem to forget about his own family, he'd probably understand.  "I could just pass the word through Rhyth and stay."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya heard the initial comments from Shalia about being glad to be able to help and watch as well as about Andreya finding out about the new family she had and just nodded silently to the smiling girl. The tall candidate knew that even when she finally laid down tonight to actually sleep she’d still be coming to terms with everything that had happened today…

The taller girl’s arms dropped to the side and she relaxed ever so slightly when Shalia released the hug for a variety of reasons, chief being that being hugged by a *naked* woman wasn’t something that Andreya normally experienced...beyond the whole ‘she’s asked to *kiss* me before!’ or even ‘she’s family!’ aspects of the situation. Standing there, Andreya considered Shalia’s offer to stay for a couple moments, even just to be able to talk while Andreya cleaned and oiled the bronze flit.

After a moment though Andreya shook her head and reassured the other girl with “No, I’m ok right now. I know how much you enjoy working for R’tal, and I don’t want to be the reason that gets messed up. And it’s *important* too, your being his runner-assistant. So it’s ok, really. But, if you’re not busy with work for R’tal or anything and you’d like to swing back by after dinner this evening sometime to come see the bronze once he’s been cleaned and oiled, and to talk, that’d be nice. And...maybe Sarati could visit as well, and I can start slowly meeting family as..well, as knowing they are actually family?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"I actually have plans with Sar for dinner tonight," Shalia said with a hint of apology in her voice.  Plans which absolutely didn't involve other people being there, and hopefully didn't involve clothes, but Andreya probably didn't need to know that.  Or want to, for that matter.  "Besides," she added with an excited bounce that, while not as impressive as Andreya could manage, was distracting enough for those who might be interested in that sort of thing, given her current clothing situation, "my gold is likely to hatch by then!"  Shalia sent a thought Noctis' way and, reassured once again that no, the egg wasn't so much as twitching, turned towards her clothes and started to get dressed.

"How 'bout lunch tomorrow?  Or maybe dinner?  I'm sure Sar would love to meet you."  Shalia considered logistics as she dressed; Sarati's weyr would be out, since it was so small and cramped with all her stuff.  And probably not the Dining Hall.  "We could have something sent up to Dad's weyr… or if you'd like him there, I'm sure he'd be happy to cook," she said, tossing a grin over her shoulder.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As Shalia said she had dinner plans already, Andreya let a little of the disappointment cross her face but she nodded understandingly. But as Shalia talked about her gold hatching, with that bounce that Andreya *totally* didn’t notice or look down at, the taller candidate grinned at Shalia saying “That’s so wonderful! I can’t wait to meet her, and to see how her and this bronze boy interact.”

Shalia’s suggestion of dinner with her, Sarati, and Sh’ain (although Andreya did have to pause a moment to remember who that was) in Sh’ain’s weyr with the rider cooking, Andreya considered a moment before saying with a nod “Yes, that sounds great, dinner with Sh’ain cooking! Still a small gathering, and hopefully will appease him enough not to throw the grand welcoming dinner with *all* the family like you mentioned earlier that he’d probably want to do...at least not for a little bit anyway.” That last bit was said with an amused grin down at Shalia before she finished with “That sounds like a wonderful plan for tomorrow’s dinner.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Yeah, that'll be fun,"Shalia smiled.  "He'll probably be one of her first recruits for her fair," she added with a laugh.  Unless another gold - such as Lady - got to him first. But she probably wouldn't want to bother with a baby bronze.  "Don't let any other golds get their hooks into him," she teased.  "Or your pretty little green!"

She chuckled at Andreya's response to dinner.  "It'll tide him over, at least," she agreed.  "For a little while!  It'll prolly be better to meet everyone in small groups first anyway."  By this time she was half-dressed, and certainly more decent than the taller Candidate in her wet clothing; she just needed to finish buttoning her shirt and pull on her pants and boots.  "I'll let him know, and ask Sar if she wants to join."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya eyed her stubborn bronze where he slept and replied with “If he *lets* her recruit him...he seems likely to have some pretty independent thoughts. But I’ll keep them close by until tomorrow’s dinner for sure, to give your gold her best chance.”

Shivering slightly as the cool air hit her skin with her damp clothing clinging to her, Andreya grinned at Shalia’s response about her dad, nodding gratefully at the idea to do small dinners. The other girl’s last words earned another nod before Andreya said “Great, just send me a message and let me know if it works for everyone tomorrow.”

Glancing down again at the bronze, seeing that Shalia was almost ready to go, Andreya said “Well, better get to taking care of him now. I’ll see you tomorrow though, whether dinner plans work or not I hope.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"She'll be a *gold*," Shalia pointed out with a chuckle.  "He may not get a say in the matter."  She noticed the taller Candidate's shiver and paused her dressing to make a shooing motion.  "Get in that pool already!" she said commandingly.  "He's waited long enough for his bath!  I'll let you know by lunch tomorrow about dinner."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya blushed slightly at Shalia’s chuckled comment, but then at the command from Shalia and the last comments Andreya nodded saying “Sounds great! Have a good rest of your day. And thanks again for all your help.” And with that, Andreya turned and headed back into the warm water to begin the process of washing, drying, and then oiling the newborn bronze flit while his green sister snoozed on the bench...

We *Are* Family! (Pt. 3) ((JP: Andreya, Shalia))

Rosiegirl

When Andreya turned to look at her, Shalia was suddenly aware of just how kissably close they were.  All she’d need to do would be to move her own head just the slightest amount and steal that kiss that had been denied her, but which she felt wouldn’t be protested about.  But… now was not the time for that, between the hungry hatchling and, especially, the shocks the other Candidate had received that day.  So instead of closing that narrow margin of space, all Shalia did was return the grin and continue to enjoy the privilege of being there to see Andreya Impress her handsome little bronze.  And maybe hope a similar opportunity would present itself in the future.

When Andreya shivered once more, Shalia’s hands unconsciously started rubbing the bare shoulders they’d been holding, to warm her up.  She quickly realized what she was doing and stopped that nonsense - after all, it was highly unlikely that she was cold, given the warmth of the hearth - but her thumbs continued to lightly stroke the skin beneath.  Shalia looked around at the flits still humming, wondering why, and it took her a few moments to realize they weren’t focused on the bronze in front of the two humans… but the second egg pot next to them, and she abruptly tensed up, thumbs coming to a standstill as she stared at the pot.

“Andreya,” she whispered, “I hope you saved some meat, because I’m pretty sure this handsome boy is about to have a sister.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Feeling Shalia’s hands on her shoulders, warm palms against her skin and rubbing after she’d shivered in reaction to a bit of wind against the bronze’s egg-yuck soaked skin, Andreya shifted under those hands a moment enjoying the feeling of those hands rubbing her shoulders and even tilted her head just a little to the side without realizing it even as she fed another small morsel to the bronze. And then those hands stopped with the girl’s thumbs now the only thing rubbing her skin and a slightly disgruntled huff, an almost mirror of her bronze flit’s huff from earlier, escaped the Harper’s lips.

Andreya wasn’t paying attention to the humming still going on, assuming the flits were still humming for the bronze, but when she felt Shalia’s hands tense on her shoulders and the thumbs freeze Andreya’s hand stopped in the motion of feeding the bronze another morsel and her head came up slightly in concern.

At Shalia’s whispered words, it took Andreya far too long to absorb and react to the words and what they mean, her first response being “Oh yes, plenty left. I didn’t know how much he might eat and didn’t want to run out.” And then the rest of the words about ‘have a sister’ penetrated and Andreya’s lips parted in a surprised ‘Oh!’ as she turned to look at the pot that that same, apparently maternal, green was nuzzling while humming and crooning in reassurance to the baby green stuck inside.

Andreya looked back and forth between the bronze still demanding food to the pot the adult green flit was nuzzling and then looked at Shalia’s asking totally stunned “But...but I can’t...can I?”

In the meantime, seeing the ‘giver of food’ so distracted, the bronze began to actually crawl out of his shell and across the top of the sand to the edge of the pot closest to where the meat had been appearing from. Cause if the ‘meat hand’ wasn’t going to continue to give it to him, he’d go get the meat *himself*. And in the neighboring, covered egg the stuck green was still giving off the occasional mew of hunger as she responded to the adult green’s comforting croons right outside the pot. Andreya, where she sat, could not hear the baby green’s mews otherwise she’d not have asked Shalia her stunned question...

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia, made suddenly aware of their closeness, also noticed Andreya’s reactions.  The slight shift of her body not away from her touch but into it, the way her tilted head offered up her neck for a kiss, or at least more access for Shalia’s hands, the small sound when those hands stopped their motion… the shorter redhead noticed these reactions, and made note for a later date.  Perhaps they were entirely unconscious reactions… but they certainly revealed something about how her new near-cousin might feel.

But those thoughts were for a later date, and even as Shalia was about to renew the shoulder rubs, her hands stilled completely when she realized the other egg was hatching.

“Yes, you can,” Shalia responded firmly.  It was either her, or herself, or let the flit go feral.  And with being about to gain a gold, she didn’t also want a green.  One female flit would be plenty for her, thank you very much!  Of course, if Andreya absolutely refused she would do it herself, but it would be better all around if the Harper Impressed her.  “After all, I did bring her for you,” she added, reaching out to slide the pot closer to the other girl.  “She’s coming one way or another.”

Between the cover of the pot and the humming of the flits, she hadn’t noticed that the hatchling was already there.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

At Shalia’s firm reassurance that Andreya *could* impress the other flit, continuing with the fact that Shalia *had* brought the egg for her anyway and was coming regardless, Andreya just nodded in shock as she watched Shalia move the other pot closer. When Shalia shifted the pot, the adult green, now reassured that the baby inside the pot was going to get looked after, backed up and just continued to humm with the rest of the adults around the room.

As Andreya’s gaze moved from the other egg pot that Shalia had moved closer back to the already hatched bronze flit, she saw his attempt to climb and reach the meat himself and reached for him as she said sternly “No, not by yourself.” Picking up the newborn bronze, being as careful as she could even as she internally ‘yucked’ at the egg-goop still coating the flit, when the bronze gave a small huff of grumbling at his foiled plan she rubbed at the bronze’s tiny headknobs calmingly as she said again “Wait, I’ll feed you.” at the same time sending the bronze reassuring feelings of being fed by Andreya’s hand.

Now holding the bronze in both hands, Andreya looked between the bronze she was holding and the other pot a moment, trying to figure out the best way of feeding *both* flits at the same time. A heartbeat later Andreya glanced back at Shalia saying “I need to get in a better position, actually sitting down, so I can feed them both.” With this warning, Andreya shifted oh-so very carefully as she was conscious of the baby bronze she was carrying, but moved quickly to sit cross-legged on the floor, her knee length skirt showing off her legs as it pooled a little bit in the middle of the ‘bowl’ her crossed legs were making.

Placing the bronze flit between her legs, firmly reassuring the bronze when she could feel the male’s annoyance rising at the delay “Wait, one more second. Food’s coming, I promise.” As she sent this, she also sent the bronze a mental image of him waiting there, where she placed him, as she handed him more chunks of meat. The bronze, satisfied that at least this ‘meat giver’ understood what he wanted, stayed where Andreya placed him reluctantly...even as he told himself that if the delay continued *too* much longer that he’d just start trying to get the meat himself again.

While this was going on, the green inside the egg pot was still mewing and when the comforting humming noise right outside the pot’s wall moved a little further away, the tiny green mewed a bit more frantically in the pot but couldn’t do anything else. Oh why oh why could she *not* have done her perfect entrance?! Now, with the pot moving, she had gotten some of this icky sand on her, coating her and sticking to her because of this *other* stuff on her. And that was *not* nice at all, she needed help and she needed it now! Oh, and also food too, because she was so terribly hungry now!

With the bronze settled, Andreya leaned a little to reach the meat pot and pull it so that it was sitting right next to her knee, easily within reach. Then, only then now that she was prepared, did she reach for the other egg pot oh-so-very carefully and pull it closer. She took a moment to feed the bronze a small bit of meat, and then while he was chewing and swallowing Andreya reached out and lifted the lid, expecting to see an egg that was just barely beginning to hatch.

Instead, when the pot’s lid came off, the top of the egg shell went with it and Andreya was greeted with the sight of the mewing so-pale green she was almost *white* little lady, wings raised and head cocked to one side as if posing, but with a distinctly impatient ‘finally I’m released!’ feeling to the pose. Her first sight of this beautiful but so *tiny* green girl, even covered in egg-yuck and sand as well, brought a wondrous smile to her face as Andreya’s breath caught on an awed “Ohhh!...” Eyes widening at just how *tiny* this green was, with one hand stroking the bronze’s head (also to make sure he didn’t jump and try to attack the green), Andreya reached over and couldn’t help gushing “Oh, what a beautiful girl you are!” as with her free hand and scooped the little girl out of the pot carefully with just a single hand.

Andreya wanted to pull the little green close and cuddle with her, reassuring the green she would be ok to stop the poor hungry girl’s mewing, but she knew the best way to do that would be to get some food into her. So instead of pulling her close, still with one hand on the bronze who was now eyeing this ‘interloper’ with a distinctly calculating look, Andreya placed the green down carefully on her leg saying “It’s ok, little one. I’ve got food for you.” even as she sent reassuring thoughts of love and acceptance to the green who’d hatched so very alone in the egg pot.

With both flits now sitting on her leg, or in her lap, Andreya had both hands free now to grab chunks of meat and begin feeding them both earnestly, even making sure to give the smallest pieces to the new green and have her swallow before giving her another piece. The green took each piece so ladylike and dainty in her claws, instead of just opening her mouth and letting Andreya drop pieces of meat in, while sitting up on Andreya’s leg and doing her best to still show off just how *beautiful* she was even as she elegantly ate each piece of meat, ignoring that she still had sand and yuck covering her hide at the moment.

The bronze, a pure contrast, still just opened his mouth for the chunks of meat and eagerly gobbled them up before watching the ‘meat hand’ like he was still starving as it brought the next piece. Still, the bronze shot the tiny green a look that made Andreya concerned about if she ran out of meat before the bronze was full enough to fall asleep and what he’d do to the green who he clearly believed was *stealing* his food.

Keeping her focus on the flits, crooning to them both, Andreya did spare a moment to whisper to Shalia in a slightly shocked voice “She hatched, totally inside the pot! Poor girl, completely alone while she hatched. But isn’t she beautiful?”

Looking down, eyes flicking from the so very dark bronze to his utter opposite, Andreya gave a small amused shake of her head at the coincidence at how opposite they were, in both appearance and in personality, as far as she could see.  The green is clearly on the smaller end of callamere greens, but besides that she is  dainty, light, lithe, pretty, and somehow just about everything else you can think of, and is perfectly proportioned to look very femine with sleek lines to her even when her wings are settled down on her back. The muzzle is even more narrow and slightly longer than other greens. But then on top of her size being quite different when next to the large bronze, she looks like some glass or sugar sculpture, her hide being a perfectly very light pale sort of mint-green that at times if you catch it just right looks oddly white for a brief moment just like sugar. The only thing not the perfectly same shade of oh-so-very pale mint-green is that she does have some slightly darker markings around her eyes, on her cheeks, and in a few other places all seemingly placed just *so* to show off her features much to her delight.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia watched Andreya caressing and speaking to the little bronze, keeping him from going after the meat himself, and gave her shoulders another encouraging squeeze.  She wished she could take him and feed him so that the other girl could concentrate on the second flit, but didn’t dare even suggest that; the bond was too new and tenuous to risk something like that.

“Just tell me what you need from me,” she said, supporting her enough to keep Andreya from tipping over as she shifted position - a kind of awkward maneuver with everything around her and hands busy holding the newhatched flit - and ready to grab the second pot if it got knocked.  She resumed her position behind her, pressed against her back, watching over her shoulder.

Shalia watched as Andreya settled the little bronze in her lap, fed him a couple of morsels, and then reached for the second pot.  If she’d been a little quicker she would have offered something to place over Andreya’s skirt, but since the only thing readily at hand was her shirt (there was probably a towel in that bag, but it was over there and things were happening too quickly to get up and go digging) it was probably just as well.  She gave a small gasp when the top of the shell came off with the lid - they’d both been so focused on the little bronze that they completely missed the other hatchling for who knew how long! - and quickly reached out to take the lid and shell from Andreya.  Very carefully setting it to the side, she took a moment to look at the tiny little green that the other girl was scooping up.

The green was much smaller than the bronze of course; that was to be expected even at hatching with their colors, but it seemed like she was comparatively small for a green even as he was comparatively large for a bronze, which made the size difference between the pair all the more striking.  Shalia watched Andreya feed the first couple of morsels and smiled; the green was also apparently more fastidious than her brother, taking the meat in her forepaws and eating it rather daintily, as opposed to his lunges.  “Oh, she is gorgeous, Andreya,” she breathed in response to her question.  “And she knows it, too, doesn’t she?”

After a minute of enjoying the sight of her friend feeding her new friends, Shalia finally moved away from the other girl.  First she moved the two egg pots further away, and then settled in next to the meat bowl, separating out the larger and smaller chunks and handing them to Andreya as needed so she could slake the two appetites.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya felt Shalia’s encouraging shoulder squeeze and knew she was going things right so far, which was actually reassuring for the taller girl. At the other girl’s offer to do what she needed, Shalia was actually quite helpful as Andreya shifted position, as there was a moment when she worried she’d fall over without being able to support herself with her hands occupied by the bronze flit, but then Shalia was there helping her. So the awkward position switch went fairly well, actually, and soon Shalia was pressed back against her, watching again for which Andreya was grateful.

For...well, probably the first time in her life Andreya had no concern for her clothes and the ick that was going to be covering the skirt, the thought didn’t even cross her mind to consider putting something over the skirt. It could be cleaned, after all...hopefully. Shalia’s gasp at the pot opening to an already hatched baby green nearly echoed her own, and Andreya gladly passed the other girl the pot lit and top of the shell, being careful not to cut Shalia with the edge of the shell.

At Shalia’s response, Andreya smiled and nodded still in awe. The green, however, didn’t take the bite she’d been about to take as she turned her long, narrow head up at Shalia’s comment, tilted her head to the side, and gave the most adorable, preening, posing look full of satisfaction that clearly said ‘Oh, I *know*, aren’t I to be admired?’ And, where as it had taken several handfuls of meat for Andreya to begin to feel connected to the bronze, it had only taken a couple of pieces the green had eaten for the harper to feel practically a ‘wave’ of triumph from the tiny green in response to Shalia’s words.

Andreya’s mouth dropped open a little and it took her a moment before she replied to Shalia in clear amazement “Oh, she totally is! And yes she very much knows...and she’s utterly pleased with herself that you, that we, noticed...I felt it. I feel her already, after only a couple bits of meat. It took so much longer for the bronze!”

Still, despite her astonishment at the whole situation her hands were continuously in motion, grabbing bits of meat and feeding the flits slowly, making sure they swallowed each bite before giving them the next. She focused on them, sending them love and acceptance, telling them (especially the bronze) how good and patient they were both being as she fed them. So focused was Andreya, that it wasn’t until Shalia was sitting by the meat bowl, sorting out the pieces of meat by their size, and actually handing them to her that Andreya realized Shalia had moved from being pressed into her back.

Glancing up at the first pieces of meat that were suddenly just *there* in her hands without her thinking about reaching for them, Andreya blinked at Shalia a moment before smiling and giving her a grateful “Thanks!” Then, with Shalia handing her specifically small or large pieces, they got into a rhythm feeding the two flits and Andreya was able to concentrate even more on them, on the feelings she felt from each flit, and on what she was sending to them.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia giggled at the green’s… well, ‘antics’ wasn’t quite the word, but she was definitely showing herself off.  As she giggled, a puff of breath gusted across Andreya’s neck.  “That’s good that you’re connecting so quickly!  And how could we not notice you, little one?” she asked with a smile.  “But don’t think we’ve forgotten about you, handsome fellow,” she added, turning her head to look at the bronze in Andreya’s lap and give him a smile.

“You’re welcome,” she replied, returning the other girl’s smile.  She was quite pleased about being a part of this joyous occasion and happy to be able to help, although there was definitely a certain allure to pressing against her newfound cousin’s back.  “You’re doing great, with both of them,” she added in encouragement.

Still, being so near the hearth was more than a little warm, and she carefully wiped away the meat juices from one hand on the back of her other so that she could undo a few buttons on her shirt in an attempt to cool off.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya was grinning down at her green as well when the pale green posed, but then the puff of air from Shalia’s giggle across her neck caused the harper to sit up a little bit straighter in response. Still, she nodded at Shalia’s reply, to her as well as to each of the flits. Turning her focus to them both, making sure not to focus too much on either of them so as not to ignore the other flit, Andreya smiled down at them both and took a moment to give them a scratch under each of their chins while they after they swallowed their current bite of meat. She said to each of them while she scratched “Oh, you both are so wonderful. Each of you!”

But Andreya quickly returned to feeding them, knowing she could pamper them later once they were fed. She glanced up at Shalia’s encouragement with a smile, saying “Thank you. Sorting the meat, the help, everything.” Then she noticed Shalia’s slightly unbuttoned shirt and, as if she’d been ignoring it (which she had been) Andreya realized how warm she was sitting here. At least her blouse/corset ensemble was an off-shoulder neckline, but that didn’t help her from feeling every extra layer she had. Giving an understanding nod, Andreya said “Yes, it is a bit warm isn’t it? As soon as, well...as they are done eating I’ll be able to move. But if you need to move back I understand.” Then, in an afterthought she added “Oh! I also got a couple towels, they’re in the bag there.”

Even as she talked with Shalia her hands were still moving, and she immediately returned her focus to the flits, feeling the bronze’s growing (but not quite complete) fullness and the green’s still preening satisfaction even as the ravenous hunger the little girl felt lessened a bit.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Of course, Andreya!  I’m glad I’m able to be here for this, and to help out,” Shalia smiled.  She started to reach out and then thought better of it; she didn’t figure the other girl would want meat juices anywhere they didn’t have to be! So instead she leaned forward enough to give Andreya an elbow bump.  “And I’m alright here, we’ve got a good rhythm going and they’ll run out of stomach soon enough.”  She glanced down at the bowl and hoped they filled up before it emptied, but it would probably be okay.  “Once they’re fed, we can move, and I’ll help you clean and oil them if you want.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya nodded at Shalia’s words, but still felt that she needed to say, to do, more to show how much she appreciated all of Shalia’s help...she didn’t know how this would have gone without the other girl there helping. Andreya noticed, having lifted her head to glance up at Shalia, the abruptly aborted reach toward her from the other girl, which was instead adjusted to an elbow bump, and with Shalia’s unbuttoned shirt Andreya caught a quick unintentional glimpse down said shirt at the pale skin underneath...apparently cousin was going bra-bandless again today.

Andreya’s cheeks were just a touch more pink as she nodded in agreement to Shalia about the rhythm, and at the other girl’s glance down at the meat bowl Andreya, making sure to keep her fingers well clear of the bronze’s mouth, said “Yeah, I’m so glad I got too much. He’s beginning to feel full though, not quite totally full, but beginning to.”

Andreya, feeding the green her next tiny piece and wondering if the tiny girl would *ever* really get full eating such tiny slivers of meat, considered Shalia’s offer to help clean and oil. She wondered if it was actually ok, once impression was set, for Shalia to help or if it would make the bond between her and the flits not as strong if someone assisted this first time...She didn’t know, but she figured Shalia did and wouldn’t have offered if there was any chance of a damaged bond between her and either the green or bronze. So, after a moment of watching the green dainty eat the piece she’d just handed her, and then glanced over to remind the bronze to swallow before she’d give him the next piece he was eagerly looking at her hand for, Andreya said gratefully “Yes, I’d love the help. I hope I got enough oil for them both though.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia gave no indication that she realized Andreya could see down her shirt, although given previous interactions the past several sevendays it was unlikely that she would have cared overly much if she did realize it.

“That’s good!” Shalia said about the bronze beginning to feel full.  “Make sure that if he’s still hungry it’s actually his, and he’s not just feeling this beauty’s,” she cautioned.  The connection between flit and human wasn’t as strong as with dragons, but there would definitely be at least some bleedover, and it was at least possible that his feelings of hunger were from the more recently-hatched green.

She glanced down at the bowl; if the bronze was slowing down, and the green was going to eat less… they should make it, yeah.  “If you don’t have enough oil, I’ll grab some of Noctis’.”  There were certainly enough flits around the Barracks to make oil an easy get.  And now there were two more, and soon to be a third!  She gave a little bounce of excitement at the thought of her gold egg waiting, and the knowledge that she’d get another chance to experience this, but first-hand this time.

If Andreya had asked about the bond and the first oiling, Shalia would have reassured her; it was the feeding that was important, and the flits would likely be completely zonked out by the time they actually did any cleaning, much less the oiling.  And in any case, she was only planning on assisting, to help out with having two flits both needing it simultaneously.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

At Shalia’s words about the bronze feeling the *green’s* hunger, Andreya glanced up in surprise and asked “Wait, he’d be possibly feeling her hunger on top of his own?” But even as she asked that Andreya was focusing more on the bronze and what, specifically, she could feel from him. Taking a second to feed the green another nibble of meat, she then fed him a larger morsel and focused on the bronze as he ate, to see if the bronze *was* actually still hungry, or if he was still eating only because his green sister was still hungry.

Andreya, focused on the bronze, didn’t see the calculating look Shalia gave the bowl of meat but at her offer Andreya nodded gratefully in thanks about the extra oil from her stash for Noctis.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia nodded.  “It’s possible.  Flits are highly empathetic.  And being Impressed to you could increase that.  Either directly, or through you, if you’re feeling it.”  She leaned forward again to get a better look at the bronze.  “He doesn’t look terribly distended, though, so I don’t think you have to worry about overfeeding him yet,” she assured Andreya.  “But see how he feels about slowing down maybe,” she suggested.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Listening to Shalia, even as she carefully fed another chunk of meat to the bronze, Andreya nodded at the explanation, tilting her head to the side curiously when Shalia leaned forward for a look at the bronze sitting in the ‘bowl’ her skirt-covered legs made. As Shalia mentioned it, Andreya realized the more experienced candidate was right, the bronze’s stomach didn’t *look* full and distended too much yet, not the way she’d heard they were supposed to get. At the suggestion, Andreya nodded saying “Slow him down, got it.”

So, focusing back on the pair of flits that were such startling contrasts with each other Andreya smiled down at the bronze. As he swallowed the piece she’d just given him, Andreya took a moment to rub gently between the bronze’s headknobs, still giving him attention even as her other hand gave the green another nibble of meat. Eyes flicking between the two, her voice pitched low and sweet as she alternated who she directed the comments to, she distracted the bronze with rubbing his headknobs through passing the green three different nibbles of meat. Only once the green had delicately chewed and then swallowed 3 pieces one at a time did Andreya take the offered larger chunk from Shalia and feed the bronze again, only to scratch and rub the male’s headknobs through passing the green 3 more nibbles of meat.

This strategy, one piece for the bronze and distracting him through 3 tiny pieces for the green seemed to be working...until the bronze *realized* the green was getting more meat pieces than him. He accepted the next chunk of meat and swallowed quicker than he had before, hardly taking time to chew. But when Andreya reached up to stroke the top of his head, he gave a quick dodge out of the range of her hand and with fast whirling yellow eyes gave the most adorable ‘roaring’ grumble as he glared at the empty ‘meat hand’ and then looked over to where the green was just taking a small piece from Andreya’s other hand. Turning from glaring at the hand that was feeding the *interloper* the bronze flit turned back up to look at Andreya and gave a frustrated (almost pouty looking) huff clearly waiting for *his* piece of food. No more head scratches for him, that was for sure.

Only just managing to keep a straight face at the bronze’s behavior, she reassured him “Ok, no more scratches. I understand.” even as she raised her head to give Shalia an amused eyebrow raise as if asking ‘Ok, slowing him down didn’t work. What now?’. At the same time, she took the next larger piece of meat and gave it to the bronze who was *clearly* overreacting as he ate that piece like he was still *totally* starving.

In the meantime, the green was still taking piece after tiny piece, content to sit there on Andreya’s leg, looking her totally beautiful self, still steadfastly ignoring the egg-yuck and sand on her since her stomach was telling her these small nibbles of meat were so much more important, and also ignoring the *male* over there who was clearly not being polite. So she was being oh-so-very patient as she was handed each next nibble of meat.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Nice thinking,” Shalia remarked with approval the first time Andreya distracted the bronze with head scritches.  Or at least it was nice while it lasted, and she giggled at the bronze’s antics once the tactic was found out.  “Want me to cut the meat up a bit?” she asked quietly, amusement coloring her words.  They couldn’t just switch to giving them both smaller pieces without running out for the green who very clearly wouldn’t want to deal with the larger chunk, but cutting them down even more could work… at least until the bronze realized he was getting smaller pieces all of a sudden.  Or giving them the smaller pieces while she cut up the larger chunks.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

At Shalia’s compliment on her quick thinking, Andreya smiled up at the other girl. Until it didn’t last, of course. Watching the pair of flits chew and swallow their current pieces of meat, admiring their two entirely different personalities, at Shalia’s quiet question Andreya gave a very small nod hoping her smart flits wouldn’t have heard even as she said just as quietly “Great idea!” Glancing at the food bowl, seeing that Shalia had sorted some of the smaller pieces to the side already, Andreya added “I’ll just reach in and grab those while you do?”

And then, putting action to words, Andreya began to reach in and pull out the smaller pieces and pass them to both flits. She knew the green wouldn’t care, they’d been the same sized pieces she was already nibbling on, so Andreya focused her attention on the more difficult male (why were males *always* more complicated?!) and fed him the smaller piece even as she sent reassuring thoughts and images of him continuing to eat out of her hand, nice and patiently. And wondered how long before the bronze would catch on this time…

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia nodded her agreement and pulled out her beltknife.  She’d prefer a cutting board, obviously, but she wasn’t going to risk getting up to hunt one down and in the process disturbing the bronze and bringing it to his attention.  He seemed altogether too clever for his (or possibly Andreya’s) good.  She waited for Andreya’s hands to clear the bowl and started cutting the larger pieces in half against the side of the bowl.  “Let me know when you need another handful,” she said, wanting to make sure the other girl didn’t reach in at the wrong time.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Still sending the bronze reassuring thoughts even as she tried to make sure he took the time to chew the smaller piece of meat, Andreya also sent loving and admiring thoughts to the green perched up on her leg who ate her piece just as slow and dainty as she’d eaten every other piece. Andreya didn’t realize there was a mushy smile on her face as she looked down at her pair of flits, feeling their hunger not quite beating at her like it had been. She was also doing her best to separate herself from their hunger so she could tell when they were really full.

With the handful she had, Andreya waited until both flits had swallowed to give them each another small piece. At Shalia’s words about warning the other girl about when she’d reach into the bowl, Andreya nodded her head saying “Of course. Thank you for…” here she glanced down at the smart bronze wanting to make sure he didn’t catch on for as long as possible and so instead of saying something else she finished with “handling the bowl there.”

Seeing that the bronze had impatiently swallowed his last small chunk of meat while the green was still finishing hers and was already looking at her hand with the meat with a somewhat calculating look in his eyes, Andreya turned her attention to the bronze again. She sent feelings of reassurance that he’d get more as well as patience, to wait, while she crooned at him “In just a moment, handsome. I’ll give you both another piece at the same time. It’s ok, there’s enough for both of you.”

Finally, as the bronzes’ tail began to flick back and forth in irritation, the green swallowed the last bit of her piece and looked up at Andreya giving the tall girl a polite chirp of inquiry and a shift of her head. In response, Andreya said “Yes, there’s more for you too, bright eyes.” As she reassured the green, she reached out to pass both flits their next piece of meat taking care to keep her fingers out of bronze lunging space.

With the pieces in her hand small, Andreya passed the pair of flits another two more pieces each before her hands were empty. While the flits both chewed, Andreya lifted her head and in a soft voice let Shalia know “I’ll need another handful in just a moment, when you’re ready.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia took a moment to look at the expression on Andreya's face, smiling herself.  Her smile faltered briefly as she imagined seeing Kime with a similar expression the day before, the joy of watching her friend's Impression to a pair of flits warring with her anger at being kept from seeing her girlfriend's Impression to Godith.

She blinked back tears and looked down at the bowl of meat, forcing herself to concentrate on the task at hand.  "I'm happy to help," she responded to Andreya's thanks, glancing up long enough to flash the other girl a smile before resuming her task.  It was difficult enough with the curved bowl as a cutting surface without letting her attention wander!

She kept her beltknife sharp, though, so cutting the meat wasn't too difficult; it was keeping her own fingers intact that was the problem.  Pretty soon she had a good rhythm going, and had gone through a substantial amount of the meat when Andreya spoke to her once more.  "Goferit," she said, pulling her knife out of the bowl.  "You're doing great," she added with a grin.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya, focused entirely on the flits in her lap, didn’t see Shalia’s surge of emotion but if she had she’d have reached out to comfort the other girl.

At Shalia’s response, Andreya glanced over to see that Shalia had pulled the knife out of the bowl and was waiting. Smiling at the shorter girl, Andreya reached in and grabbed a scoop of smaller meat chunks with a “Thanks!” She did see that Shalia had gotten through a lot of the meat chunks and cut them into smaller bits already, and based on how it looked Andreya was a bit more relieved even as she realized the pounding hunger she felt from the flits had lessened a bit.

Andreya spent the next while just steadily feeding both the flits, glad for the green’s slow and dainty eating as that gave her an opportunity to slow down the bronze’s inhaling of the smaller meat chunks to something a bit more reasonable. Andreya fed the flits through this handful as well as 2 more (making sure to alert Shalia each time she needed to reach into the bowl), getting slower and slower between passing the pair each small chunk of meat.

Finally, while waiting for his chunk of meat the bronze’s muzzle opened wide in a yawn that he quickly tried to smother but was unsuccessful. Smiling down at the bronze, feeling that his hunger was nearly gone but that he was *determined* to keep asking for food while the green was getting meat still herself, Andreya began to space out the next few meat chunks to the bronze with longer time between as well as soothing strokes between the bronze’s headknobs. Her touch, and the nearly full belly the bronze had, was making the bronze drowsy enough not to argue against the delayed food chunks he received, as long as he still got a small piece every now and then.

The green moving slow and steady through each meat chunk she’d been handed, due to her smaller size, was feeling on the way to full but not quite there yet. The pale green, watching the bronze yawn and begin to doze even as the male insisted on getting meat still, lifted her narrow snout in the air as she gave the larger bronze a look of clear disdain at his greediness and gluttony, wanting what he wanted just to have it.  So, Andreya made sure to keep passing the tiny green small bites of meat, adoring the way the green moved as she ate so lady-like for a newborn. She was surprised at the clear personality differences that had shown through for each flit despite they’d both been starving when they’d Hatched.

After a moment, with the bronze still half dozing/half demanding a bit of food and the green still delicately eating the bites of meat she was handed, Andreya glanced up at Shalia and asked with slight concern in her voice, needing to make sure she was still doing things right “How do you think it’s going?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As soon as Andreya's fingers had cleared the bowl once more, Shalia resumed cutting the meat.  She finished just before the taller girl needed another handful and carefully set the knife aside to clean it later; the flits probably wouldn't take long enough to finish eating for the juices to dry enough to be a worry.

Her task done, she simply sat and watched the byplay between girl and flits with a smile; even second-hand, their personalities were quite distinct. Shalia gave an approving nod and murmur once she caught on that Andreya was slowing down the bronze's feeding again. And this time the demanding little greedy-guts didn't seem to be noticing, although she wasn't going to risk bringing it to his attention by saying something!

"It's going great," she assured Andreya with a grin.  "You've got quite the pair on your hands there, I think!"  She carefully set the bowl down on the floor, trying not to disturb the sleepy bronze, and stood up.  "You said you have towels?" She asked heading towards the pack, intending on grabbing one for her (and Andreya's) hands and the knife.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The bronze was curling his tail around him a bit, curling in even as he fought against being drowsy and Andreya’s soothing fingers in order to keep eating. Feeding another bite to the green, at Shalia’s reassurances, Andreya smiled and then nodded at that comment about the pair of so opposite flits. At the question, the taller candidate nodded saying “Yes, I got a few towels actually...hopefully enough now with both of them. There’s also the bathing and oiling supplies in there too, but we’ll have to take them to the bath pool to bath them.” Maybe there’d be some extra towels by the bathing pools they could use for drying the flits off after a bath.

Andreya focused back on the flits, forgetting to mention the wooden box she’d gotten for the egg shell pieces...although she’d not expected to need a second box for a second egg!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia nodded her understanding, and pulled a towel out.  "We'll be able to get more towels there," she said as she wiped her hands clean, echoing her cousin's thoughts. She cleaned her knife off and gave it a quick inspection before sheathing it,  then brought the rest of the towels over to Andreya, figuring the other girl would want a head start on cleaning the egg goo and meat juice off at her earliest opportunity.

She settled back down, towels in her lap, and smiled down at the green; she already seemed like she'd complement the other girl well, which was good because the bronze looked like he was going to be a real handful!

"How're they doing?" she asked; the bronze was clearly ready to drop off and hanging on by pure stubbornness, just waiting for the green.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia’s words received a nod even as Andreya kept her focus on the pair of flits. It was a sign of how dedicated and focused on these flits the Harper candidate was that the normally *so* careful, put-together, and overly clean girl was able to ignore the sticky drying bits of egg goo covering not just her hands but were on her skirt as well, not to mention the blood from the meat that had stained her fingers. She was, unconsciously, making sure not to touch her hair with her gross hands, not even to brush stray bits that had escaped the braid back out of the way.

Andreya watched as the bronze’s eyes drifted shut after another yawn even as he still kept himself upright instead of curling into sleep, and pulled her hand back from where she was stroking his head being careful not to make a move that would disturb him However as she carefully fed the green a few more small pieces slowly (thinking the bronze was finally out for the count), the sound of the green still eating jerked the bronze out if his upright doze. With a small jerk, the bronze‘s eyes opened half-way and he opened his snout in a grumbling whine for more food like *that interloper* was getting.

Knowing the bronze didn’t *need* more food, that he was full and was just being stubborn, Andreya shushed him and stroked his head again in the same calming motion she’d used to get him to doze reassuring him softly with “It’s ok, handsome. You’ll get more later. Rest now.” As she said that, after an annoyed grumble the bronze’s muzzle closed slowly and his eyes drifted shut again as he *finally* curled up limply in the bowl between her legs.

Letting out a breath at the attitude she’d been getting from the bronze, Andreya crooned at the lovely, polite green a moment before turning to Shalia and whispering in relief of the bronze having finally slipped into the food coma that he *should* have fallen into minutes ago if he’d not fought so hard “Oh man! The attitude he has contained in such a small package. So stubborn too!”

Smiling down at the green, who slowed down on her eating too between adorable looking yawns that the green looked almost embarrassed to be doing as she shifted her head down as if to hide the yawn behind her wings, Andreya added “She’s just about done herself. Maybe a few more bites, I think?”

However, as if to directly contradict Andreya’s words and prove how much *she* was not the horrible glutton the bronze had been, how much better *she* was over that larger, rude,...*male*, the green looked at the small piece of meat that she was in the process of eating in small delicate bites (only about halfway through the small chunk), and instead of finishing it the green laid it down on Andreya’s skirt-covered leg and gave a soft croon as if to say ‘I’m done’. But then, instead of curling up and passing out immediately like the bronze had, the green finally looked herself over (not being hunger for the first time) and gave a clearly distressed whimper as she stretched her wings out. The green was *clearly* unhappy that she was covered in *yuck* and not clean like she should be!

Holding back a laugh at the green’s antics, both to not offend the green or wake up the limp bronze, Andreya reassured the green saying “Yes, that’s going to be taken care of next, bright eyes. You’ll get all clean, no worries.” Reassured by her person’s words, the green lowered her wings and settled back down, but didn’t curl up to doze...no way could she let herself *sleep* in this state, after all!

With the green settled down and the bronze limp where he was curled up, Andreya finally glanced up again at Shalia and let out a happy and yet overwhelmed sounding breath saying “Wow...just..wow.” Seeing the towels Shalia had waiting in her lap, Andreya held her hand out for one with a kind of dazed smile saying “Oh, a towel would be great! Then we can get this pair cleaned up, finally. I have a feeling the bronze will sleep through the whole thing, but that this pretty girl will keep herself awake and alert as much as possible until she’s cleaned and oiled...I get a feeling she’s going to be very particular about the cleaning process.” That last bit was said with a small, amused, uplift in her voice.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia giggled as she passed a towel.  Like human, like flit, sometimes!  "Then you should probably clean her first and let her get her beauty sleep.  Not that she needs the beauty part of it, of course!" she added, smiling at the pretty little green.  "Want me to take him so you can get up?" she asked, readying a couple more towels for the flits once Andreya got her hands more or less clean, suspecting neither Candidate nor green would want to use a dirty towel for that.  The bronze might not care (especially now that he was unconscious), but the girl still would.

We *Are* Family! (Pt. 2) ((JP: Andreya, Shalia))

Rosiegirl

At mention of the family dinner her mom being invited, Andreya’s eyes widened slightly before she nodded. Her mom would be...ecstatic, surely to come to a family dinner. And at the idea of Weyrwoman Kassia wearing one of Mom’s designs, Andreya couldn’t help but grin and nodded again saying “Oh, Mom would just...she’d be stunned to have Kassia wearing something she makes. And oh, of course about the discounts.”

At Shalia’s comments when Andreya pulled back from the hug, the Harper added “I’m so glad that the timing worked this time, you finally being able to get your gold flit. And yes, you did say...but I didn’t expect the *day after* the Hatching. Although, with Foreth’s soon to be clutch, I suppose if it wasn’t this soon after the Hatching then we’d have to wait until after the *next* Hatching to get flits...or else risk them if we Impressed at Foreth’s next clutch.”

Listening as Shalia continued talking about when T’rif requested the egg, when Shalia said he’d not given Shalia and Sarati her name, respecting her choice about joining the family, Andreya couldn’t help the smile that crossed her face. T’rif’s respect for her before they’d even gotten a chance to really talk made her feel all warm and happy, helped her to realize how lucky she’d gotten with who her father was. Then when Shalia continued on to talk about wanting specifically a gold from Sar’s Lady, Andreya nodded saying “Well, now Sar won’t have to...She will be your gold and I’m so happy it worked out for you.”

As Andreya was speaking, talking about flits and how lucky Shalia was with being able to get her gold after turns of waiting, over by the hearth the egg T’rif had given her that was buried in warm sand was beginning to shift against the sand in the pot as the flit inside the egg began to tap against the inside of the egg...It was as if all this talk of golds had caught the bronze’s attention in its egg and the bronze was wanting to make it known that *he* was there and would be the one to win all the golds.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“And there wouldn’t be much better advertising than having the Weyrwoman wearing one of her dresses,” Shalia laughed.  And she’d absolutely make anything look stunning.  “Especially if she wears it to the Gather dance with all eyes on her!”

“We probably would have had until Foreth actually clutched before that would be a real concern, though obviously earlier is better than later,” she responded to Andreya’s comment about risking them.  “But we definitely won’t have to worry about them now!  I’d say they’ll hatch sometime this evening, or tomorrow at the latest, going by how hard the shells were this morning.  And when I checked after lunch.”

Of course, especially at this late stage, heat would make a big difference, and the eggs by the hearth were being kept at a higher temperature than in Sarati’s tiny & crowded weyr, so the hatchlings inside them were getting ever closer to being ready to come out of their shells.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya grinned at Shalia nodding agreement as she said “Exactly. Kassia, the Weyrwoman of Arolos, wearing something my Mom makes, even if it wasn’t to a Gather would be...mind-blowing. But if it was a Gather dress...I can’t even imagine what that would do for Mom. She’d be the envy of the other tailors, that’s for sure.” That last bit Andreya said with a laugh.

As Shalia reassured Andreya they didn’t have anything to worry about with bonding with their flits now, there being enough time, Andreya nodded saying “That’s what T’rif said when I’d asked, worried about the egg. Sometime in the next day or two. I left his office, had lunch, and then got everything ready just in case.” Andreya waved a hand at the sealed meat pot, which had been placed well out of way of the heat from the hearth to help the meat stay as unspoiled as it could be for as long as possible. Another wave of her head directed Shalia to the other bag, the one clearly not full of study materials and hidework, that was laying next to the ‘coffee table’. Then she continued with “I’ve been here ever since, keeping the egg next to the heat.” Thinking about Shalia’s words about checking the shell hardness, with a glance now at the egg Andreya admitted “I’ve yet to actually lift the cover to see the egg, not wanting to do something to damage it unintentionally and knowing it needs to be kept warm..”

And of course, over by the hearth, said egg encased in sand was still being tapped from the inside (on the part of the egg toward the bottom, buried in sand), and the tapping got harder as if the bronze flit sensed the conversation moving on from golds and wanted to go back to that conversation. However, with how packed the sand was around the egg there didn’t seem to be enough give and the bronze in the egg began to tap harder in frustration, clearly wanting to get out *now* and being upset that the shell was so clearly standing in his way. How *dare* that shell disregard the bronze’s tapping against it like this? Didn’t the shell know *who* he was and that he wanted out and out *right now!*?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Well, if what I’ve seen you wearing is any indication, she deserves being the envy,” Shalia smiled.  She didn’t know how much of the other girl’s clothing was from her mother, but she hadn’t seen her in anything (well, other than the uniforms, of course) that didn’t look really good on her.  “I wonder if she could improve this,” she laughed, gesturing at her own uniform.  Probably not, though.

As Andreya talked about getting everything ready, Shalia chuckled; a girl after her own heart, this was!  “So you haven’t even looked yet?  I’ve spent hours staring at my gold egg!” she laughed, only exaggerating slightly.  “You should go take a look before it gets destroyed in the hatching, it’s really rather lovely!”  Shalia nudged the other girl’s leg with her own, urging her to get up.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia’s compliments earned the shorter candidate a blush as Andreya said “Thank you, I’ll let her know you’re admiring the skirts and dresses. A lot of what I’ve gotten she’s helped make or designed, especially since coming here and needing to get clothes as I shot up like a weed.” And a glance down at Shalia’s uniform earned a sad smile as Andreys shook her head and replied with “Sadly, no...I showed her and asked. The basic uniform is just going to have to be terrible...But she’s already thinking of different outfits for once I don’t have to wear the most basic, hoping to come up with some better fabrics or something even if the color has to stay the horrible yellow.”

At Shalia’s laughing comment, Andreya shook her head and said “No, I’ve not. Not even a peek. Mom was always so impressed around my birthdays, she said. Not once did I ever try and sneak a peek at presents before the day.” Shalia’s nudge on her leg and urge to go take a look at the egg earned the covered egg a longing glance, even as she asked “Well, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to look at it, to uncover it even though it does let out some of the heat, if you’re suggesting I look.” And with that, it hardly took another second to convince the tall girl to get up and head over to the hearth.

Instead of bending over, with the skirt she was wearing, Andreya kneeled down by the hearth and carefully pulled the egg pot closer. With one last smiling glance at Shalia, Andreya lifted the top off the pot and looked down into it. Surrounded by pale, hot sand, the top of the egg was clearly visible with it’s dark color. It was a whirling contrast of colors and it took a moment for Andreya’s eyes to make sense of what she was seeing, especially since she was seeing only the very tip top section of the egg. There was what looked like the tips of a pair of bright red feathered wings that wrapped around the top of the egg, from back to front, and met to form a triangle. Under the red wings the color of the eggs was a really pretty smokey blue color, kind of like swirly clouds even though the colors of the blue sky seemed to shift even as Andreya looked down at the egg.

As Andreya stared down at the egg for the first time she pulled in a stunned breath and she had to admit Shalia was right...it was beautiful in an almost sinister kind of way. Looking at the egg and the feelings the image, even partial image, evoked in her the harper could almost hear the ominous beginning notes of a song, deep and rumbling, threatening sounding with just the hint of a light melody echoing through the eerie notes, as if there was hope for the song...if only you could listen hard enough, maybe coax it out up to the surface.

And just as the notes were beginning to possibly string themselves together as a possible song, still holding her breath in awe as she grasped at the song floating through her head, there was a tap...and then another tap, just as frustrated sounding as the first. And she hadn’t just heard the tap but also felt the faint vibration of it where her palms were around the pot.

Glancing up at Shalia with wide eyes, she said in amazement “I..I heard that..did you??”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“That’ll be good,” Shalia smiled as Andreya talked about different fabrics for her altered uniforms.  “Even if you’re stuck with the color, you’ll look so much better with a different cut.”  Near-cousin or no, Shalia wasn’t about to let their new relationship affect her attraction for the other girl.  At least as long as she continued not to mind it.

“Don’t worry, it’s warm enough over there that looking at it won’t harm it.  Shards, you could probably bring it to the deepest caverns and be fine at this point!” she laughed.  Not that she’d consider for a moment doing that.  Just in case.  After Andreya got up and moved over to the pots, Shalia followed her, dropping to her knees to the side and a little back.  She didn’t want to get between the younger girl and her egg, but she wanted to be able to watch Andreya’s face as she saw the egg for the first time, and she returned her smile with an encouraging nod.

She moved the other egg pot, the one she had brought, a little further away from the hearth, but quickly returned her gaze to the other girl’s face, and was rewarded with the reaction as Andreya looked at the egg.  Eggs were always lovely, whether firelizard or dragon, but there was something special about knowing one was yours.

Shalia was about to suggest pulling the egg out - carefully, of course! - to get a better look at it when she heard the faint tapping.  And then another sound.  She glanced around the room quickly and saw several firelizards landing on furniture around the two girls and the egg and starting to hum.  She met Andreya’s gaze with wide eyes of her own and whispered, “It looks like you took a peek just in time!”  She reached out to squeeze the other girl’s shoulder for a moment and then stood up, quickly striding over to the covered meat bowl and bringing it back.  “Here,” she said, setting it by Andreya and then taking a couple of steps away before dropping back down to the ground.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia’s comments about clothes and fabrics earned a nod of agreement and a pleased “Thank you.” and the other girl’s teasing  words about the egg being warm enough caused Andreya to smirk, but then her focus was entirely on the egg in front of her although she was aware that Shalia had moved to kneel beside and a little behind her before Andreya lifted the lid on the egg pot. She didn’t even notice when the other egg pot got moved slightly away.

Andreya was still looking at Shalia when the other girl glanced around, and it was only then that the Harper girl realized that there were several firelizards now in the room and humming. At the other girl’s whispered comment, Andreya couldn’t help the shocked nod before she grinned at Shalia in response to the shoulder squeeze. Andreya watched Shalia move to retrieve the meat pot, and as the other girl returned Andreya’s gaze returned to the egg.

Listening intently, bending closer over the egg, Andreya heard the same furious tapping coming from the egg and still felt the vibrations, but the top of the egg did not do anything. Holding the edge of the pot firmly in one hand, Andreya reached in to touch the top of the egg’s hard shell with the softest of brushes. The tapping halted abruptly as soon as her fingertips brushed the surface of the egg and Andreya quickly jerked her hand back, worried she’d frightened the egg’s occupants. It was several heartbeats before anything else happened, no tapping, no shifting, nothing.

There was nothing from the egg for so long that Andreya risked a concerned glance up at Shalia before turning back to the egg in front of her. ‘Just a couple more heartbeats, and if there’s no noise I’ll touch the egg again’ Andreya thought to herself, but just as she finished that thought suddenly the top of the egg exploded outward, leaving everything that was below the level of the sand entact. Ducking to not get hit by flying pieces of shell, Andreya got a glimpse of the goo covered creature that burst from the egg with a ‘roar’ (translation: adorable trill) of triumph at finally defeating the shell and gaining his release. Andreya was frozen for a brief moment as she stared down at the wet, gooey looking, dark red-bronze form with a series of even darker markings all over the tiny hatchling.

It was when the ‘roar’ ended and the bronze baby turned his fast whirling red eyes on her and gave another ‘roar’ (this one a distinctly pitifully hungry mew) that Andreya rushed into movement. Reassuring the newborn with an ecstatic “It’s ok, I’m here. I’ve got you, I know you’re hungry, you handsome thing.” she quickly jerked off the lid to the meat and grabbed a few of the tiny chunks of meat. Holding the pot in one hand, so that it didn’t tip over, Andreya moved the other hand with the tiny chunks of meat over and crooned at the bronze hatchling “Here you go, I got it specially for you.” and held out the first small chunk between two fingers, the rest of the chunks held in her palm with curled fingers.

The bronze, clearly having gotten frustrated with the delay caused by having to break out of the egg, lunged forward and snapped at the meat in Andreya’s fingers, closing a hair's-breadth from the Harper’s fingertips, before pulling that first chunk of meat into his mouth. Doing her best to be reassuring, this was a baby after all, even as she worked to keep her fingers as clear of the meat as possible Andreya began feeding the bronze the few other pieces of meat she’d grabbed in the first handful, feeding only one at a time and making sure the tiny bronze’s mouth was empty before holding out the next piece.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia shifted position so she could see the proceedings more clearly.  This was Andreya’s moment, but she wanted to be able to get as good a view of it as she could!  She kept moving her gaze from the egg to the other girl’s face and back, smiling at the transfixed look on her face.  It would take a herd of runners to tear Andreya’s face away from the egg right now, she knew; it had certainly been that way for her when Noctis hatched, and a beatific look came over her own face as she thought about that day, although it was quickly chased away by a small frown as she considered her own hardening egg.  She sent a thought her blue’s way, getting a sleepy response that assured her that no, the golden orb wasn’t in danger of hatching anytime soon, at least in his considered and expert opinion.  Trusting the blue - and Sarati and Lady - to let her know to get her butt there on the double if she was needed, she focused back on the tableau in front of her.

Andreya reached out to touch the egg, and after several moments looked back at her.  Shalia gave a reassuring nod and smiled, mouthing for her to do it again.  But before the other girl could, the little bronze made the point moot, bursting out of the egg like a dragon diving into the lake (she winced a little at her own analogy, the end of Foreth’s flight still being quite the vivid memory) except in reverse.  Being less focused on the egg than Andreya, she wasn’t able to duck in time, and she absentmindedly reached up to peel a shard sticking to her cheek away.

The little bronze gave the absolutely most adorable little trill of defiance against the world, followed by an equally adorable little mew of hunger.  She watched Andreya feed him his first morsel of food, wincing at how near to losing her fingertips she came, and quickly moved over so she was kneeling right behind her, pressed against her back with her hands on the other girl’s shoulders and watching over her shoulder.  Shalia whispered into her ear, “Don’t let him do that, make him behave, you don’t want him developing bad habits at the start.”  Lunging like that could be very dangerous if it wasn’t curtailed early on.  “Concentrate and think clearly about what you want him to do as you tell him,” she encouraged.

She took another look at the hungry little bronze, admiring his coloration.  Even with the egg goo still glistening, it was obvious that he wasn’t going to be bright & shiny like most bronzes, but the marks on his face were fascinating.  Almost like he was wearing a mask.  “He’s gorgeous, Andreya,” she said.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Attempting to be a bit more cautious since the first snap the bronze gave her fingers, Andreya had only managed to carefully feed the bronze one more piece of meat, which he of course snapped at her fingers again. He was *HUNGRY* and the hand had food that he wanted *NOW*. By the time the flit had swallowed that second tiny chunk of meat, Andreya felt Shalia moving and pressing against her back, her hands gripping Andreya’s shoulders. She was about to reach forward and feed a third piece to the roaring/mewing bronze when Shalia’s whispered words reached her ears. Andreya pulled her hand back, hearing that small roaring-trill of anger at the *FOOD* being pulled back from the bronze, who’s tiny talons were clutching at the edge of his shell.

Shalia’s breath on her bare neck, the braid hanging forward in front of her, caused a small shiver under Shalia’s hands, but Andreya ignored that and nodded in understanding as she whispered back “Thank you!” Focusing back on the bronze, who was now looking back and forth between Andreya and Shalia, giving the latter the most adorably angry look and a small hissing growl as *that* one had been responsible for the other one pulling the food back. Andreya did as Shalia suggested and focused on the bronze as she said and thought together “No. Don’t growl.”

She followed that with beginning to move her hand with the meat closer. As soon as the ‘meat hand’ began to move the bronze’s red whirling eyes focused on that and Andreya actually saw the flit’s body tense up as if he was going to lunge again (now that she knew what to look for). Before he could snap his neck forward Andreya said and thought at the bronze a bit more firmly “No! Don’t snap. Wait.” The bronze turned his head up to look at Andreya’s face, tilting his head to the side a little considering the thoughts and words before turning his attention back to the meat and tensing again to lunge.

This time when Andreya noticed that tensing she pulled her hand back and said again “No. Don’t snap. Wait.” The bronze halted when the hand was pulled back, paired again with the same thoughts and words, and this time he focused on Andreya’s face and she could almost see the bronze’s tiny nostrils flare as he huffed out at her, clearly angry at her. Still Andreya stared down at the bronze and again gave the verbal command “No, Don’t snap. Wait.” while at the same time she thought firmly at the bronze an image of him staying still in his egg while she brought the meat toward him and fed him, with him not snapping.

Waiting a moment, while the bronze looked from Andreya’s face to her hand and then back again, when the bronze finally relaxed with another huff into his shell Andreya smiled at the bronze and sent all kinds of warm, happy, pleased feelings. Then she moved her hand back up and toward the small flit, who sat there looking like this was his plan all along and waited oh-so-very charmingly for Andreya to move her hand all the way up to the bronze. When she had the meat up by the bronze’s head, she reassured him with “Ok, it’s ok, now you can take it.” Only then did the bronze move, making sure not to lunge, and took the meat from Andreya’s fingertips.

Once the flit had taken that third piece, Andreya reached to grab a few more pieces, waiting while the bronze swallowed the morsel he’d just taken from her. While the bronze swallowed that piece, before reaching out with the next one, Andreya whispered to Shalia “Yes, he is. Beautiful, stunning...and I can’t wait to see him without all the egg goo, I wonder if his color will look just as dark red bronze then.” After a brief pause she asked with a hint of concern “He did better there, what do you think?” And in reality, Andreya wasn’t just asking about how the bronze did, but about how she did and was currently doing as well.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Unaware of the effect that her nearness - and her warm breath on bare skin - might be having on Andreya, Shalia attributed the small shiver she felt to any number of emotions connected to the hatching.  Including a reaction from the little hatchling itself as the air caressed its hide for the first time, with the quickly-drying goo not being as good of an insulator as when it was in the shell.

She squeezed Andreya’s shoulder once more as she took control, trying to convey that she was doing a good job.  But just in case, she also whispered “That’s right, good job” when the other girl told the little bronze not to growl.  That squeeze was followed by more as she stopped the lunging, and then a full on pat when the hatchling took the morsel more calmly and at far less threat to her fingers.

“He did great,” Shalia whispered back into her ear.  “You did great.  Keep going like this, you’re doing wonderful.”  Of course it wasn’t possible for her to have heard what the other girl was really asking, but she answered it anyway.  “And yeah, I think he will.  He’s going to be a distinctive little fellow, that’s for sure.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Really, it had been Shalia’s breath against her neck, a neck she *knew* was normally sensitive when people gave it ‘attention’, that had caused her shiver but it was a reasonable thought that the shiver had been caused by Andreya beginning to feel things from the tiny bronze. In fact, as the bronze swallowed the third piece of meat and eyed Andreya’s hand looking for more the Harper realized that the pain in her stomach and the eagerness she felt was coming from the bronze who was trying to be oh-so-patient and not lunge again, although Andreya could see his tail whipping around behind him in agitation.

Andreya was actually very grateful for Shalia’s presence against her back, the squeeze of her shoulders the other girl was giving in encouragement. When Shalia whispered back in reassurance, Andreya turned her head slightly to shoot the girl kneeling behind her a happy grin and replying with “Great! And yes he will be.” before turning back to focus on the bronze.

In the same method, grabbing a handful of a few tiny chunks of meat, reminding the bronze not to lunge when it looked like he was tensing up, and then slowly feeding the ravenous bronze, Andreya went through about 2 more handfuls of meat chunks. Each piece of meat she fed the bronze, crooning at him and whispering sweet reassuring words to the lovely fellow, meant that Andreya felt more from him. Mainly it was some serious hunger and strong agitation at the slowness of the feeding, but as one of the adult firelizards moved and flew over the bronze, wings stirring the air around the hearth as that humming adult green flew down to land on the hearth, overly curious about the bronze.

The green flying closer and landing, and the breeze the wings stirred up, hit the cooling egg goo covering the bronze’s hide and Andreya sucked in a breath at the feeling even as the bronze gave a loud barking sound and curled his tail around him in a shiver that Andreya echoed herself. Letting out a breath, Andreya said soothingly to the bronze “It’s ok, little guy. You’ll be warm soon, let’s just get you fed though.” Her words, and her reminder of the still hungry hole in his belly, had the bronze sitting back up in response looking for the meat-holding hand as he continued to take a small piece at a time.

Over in the neighboring egg pot, however, the flit inside had been steadily tapping at the inside of the shell, softly, so very softly going around in a very precise circle around the whole inside of the egg just a smidge higher than the level of the sand that sat outside the egg, it wouldn’t do to hatch and get *dirty* right off the bat, after all. The occupant inside the egg had been steadily, softly, tapping the whole way around the egg until she was *sure* she was ready to greet the world on her own terms.

It was just about now, with the adult green giving the baby bronze a ‘flyby’ and examining him, that that same adult green turned away from the bronze and, still humming, began to examine the neighboring pot. Inside the egg, the occupant could hear the adult flit outside getting closer with their humming and, deciding there was no better ‘theme song’ to take advantage of to make her entrance the tiny newborn green shifted in her egg and..quite literally raised the roof of the egg up off the bottom part as if lifting the lid off a box, both ‘halves’ of the egg perfectly intact and with a beautifully straight ‘seam’ where the top of the egg separated the whole way around.

But sadly, with this pot still covered the top of the egg only had a very small amount of room to move up, causing the green to bump the egg shell against the top of the lid making it shift just the tiniest amount on the pot. Surprised that her perfect entrance had been *ruined* the green in the egg still in it’s covered pot gave an indignant and hungry mew that was still a bit muffled by the pot’s lid. Thankfully, the adult green was now staring at the neighboring egg pot most intently and the humming had increased in intensity.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

We *Are* Family! (Pt. 1) ((JP: Andreya, Shalia))

Rosiegirl

(OOC: A bit backdated of a thread. This follows directly after the thread titled "Family Means No One Gets Left Behind Or Forgotten.' between Andreya and T'rif and is set on 8.28.5.3, the morning after the MD's Hatching.)

Walking out of T’rifoshe’s office, the egg pot in its holder cradled carefully in her arms, Andreya’s stomach was no longer in knots worrying about talking with her dad for the first time. The talk had been...nothing like she’d been worried it would be. Her dad had been kind, worried about her reaction to the news, and more than willing to have a relationship with her, any type of relationship she felt like having with him whether it was really embracing him as her father or not. He was actually *eager* to spend time with her and get to know her, as well as introduce her around to the rest of the family.

Family...it was so strange a thing. You could wake up one morning thinking family was just two people, you and your Mom. Then, all in a second and purely by happenstance, your family was now many times what it was before, including people you’d met already and never even known you were connected to. So very strange as to be unreal. Like one of those ‘Harper tales’ she’d enjoyed hearing told as a youngster.

Shaking her head, Andreya still couldn’t believe how different everything was to how she’d woken up this morning. How different everything felt now…

Walking through the barracks, not really thinking about where to go except back to her cot, before she even reached it her stomach decided to make its displeasure with Andreya’s lack of concern with food known...quite loudly. Stopping briefly, deciding whether to leave the egg by her cot or take it with her, Andreya decided to take it with her. She didn’t want to risk the egg being out of her sight even for a moment, who knows how soon it might Hatch. So, turning away from the direction of her cot Andreya headed instead to the Dining Hall, intending to sit with her egg as close to a hearth as possible no matter how hot *she* got, she wanted to make sure the egg in its pot was warm enough.

Her egg...her Callamere flit, produced by her second cousin’s gold flit. Wow...her dad had gotten her a flit, before even speaking to her or knowing if she’d come speak to him (as his daughter instead of a candidate). That was another thing that was just sticking in her mind, his *caring* that much about her already. It felt like a puzzle Andreya needed to figure out...how this ‘having a dad’ thing really works.

But before she had too much time to dwell on this new puzzle, she was at the Dining Hall. Carefully carrying the egg pot in its holder with a strap over her shoulder but still cradling the pot close with one arm, she gathered a plate of food. Since she was out of hands, however, she asked one of the Staff walking around who didn’t look terribly busy if they could bring her a tall mug of juice. The Staffer agreed with a smile, and it was just as Andreya was sitting down in a seat as close to the hearth as she could get that there was a mug of chilled juice sitting in front of her. She nodded her thanks, placed her egg pot on the floor next to the hearth for the heat (but still where she could easily reach it) and ate.

And boy was she suddenly hungry! Breakfast felt like it had never happened as far as her stomach was concerned. She finished the first plate of food, quickly gathered and ate a second plate (making sure to take the egg with her), and then sat back in her chair a moment thinking. Now that her stomach didn’t feel like it was about to consume itself, the Harper began making a mental list of the items she’d need to gather before the egg Hatched.

When the mental list evolved into more than a few things, Andreya actually ended up requesting a scrap hide and charcoal from a passing Staffer who, after giving her a look until they noticed Andreya’s candidate knots and figuring it was just a quick ‘omg, I forgot my hidework and need to complete it!’ moment, returned quickly with the requested items. It took Andreya mere moments to recreate the list she’d already done, before continuing through the rest of the list:

~raw meat,

~towel to clean off egg goop (and to clean the egg shells themselves to save the shell pieces),

~soapsand to bathe the flit,

~hide oil and oil rag,

~a harness and/or collar,

~some type of bedding for the flit,

~a secure wooden box to protect the shell pieces until she figured out what to do with them (but still wanting to save them so that she *could* do something with them),

~a flit sling,

and, most importantly (for the flit to cling to without scratching *her* or destroying her clothes)

~a thick leather glove and

~a shoulder pad she could strap over her shoulder, on top of whatever she was wearing

As Andreya looked over the list, taking extra time to make sure she didn’t miss anything, once she was sure she was done she decided which stop to make first. It..didn’t make sense to get the raw meat *now*, even though she was in the Dining Hall and was already here, as she’d have to carry it with her while she gathered everything else. So, Andreya quickly came up with a plan of action of where she needed to go and in which order, with the raw meat being the last stop before going back to the Barracks. Tailor first for sling, glove, and shoulder pad, and then hopefully Stores for everything else, then back to Kitchen for a sealed container of raw meat. That made the most sense.

So, Andreya carefully picked up the now quite warm egg pot in it’s holder, swung the holder’s strap over her shoulder to feel more confident (even as she still held the pot close to her body) and then headed off to the tailors. It took a bit of describing to one of the tailors, a woman named Bronwynn, for the tailor to sketch out the ‘shoulder pad’ with straps/buckles that could just be attached at the shoulder/under the arm for the flit to sit on without having to ruin every outfit with a thicker shoulder piece, but the tailor said she’d work on it and have the shoulder pad ready for Andreya in about a sevenday, but would send Andreya a note if there was a delay. Bronwynn also seemed interested herself in this ‘attaching shoulder pad’ idea and planned to make one for herself too. The thick leather glove and the ‘flit sling’ were a lot easier for Andreya to get from the tailors and after giving the tailor woman the payment for the items, including the ordered ‘attaching shoulder pad’, Andreya left.

Next visit was the Storerooms, with Vyemina still there. When Andreya gave the Storemistress her list, with the few tailor provided items crossed off, Vyemina looked it over and then said she’d begin gathering everything. It didn’t take long, the Storemistress didn’t get to be the Storemistress by not being efficient at her job, but when Vyemina returned carrying a sack she said she’d found everything on Andreya’s list, except a harness/collar. Instead, since the flit would be growing quickly, Vyemina produced a tiny jar of Harper blue paint and suggested Andreya used this to mark her flit, getting a collar or harness once the flit was more grown. Amdreya thanked Vyemina for the suggestion, as well as got some names of people who make flit harnesses and collars for when she would need it.

Since these were not items normally provided, Andreya passed over compensation for the items happily. She thanked Vyemina sincerely, then took the bag (after adding the glove and ‘flit sling’ to the bag), then after a quick stop back by the Dining Hall for the sealed container of raw meat (to keep it fresher longer), Andreya headed back to the Candidate Barracks.

First she went to her cot and set up all the items that wouldn’t be immediately needed upon the egg Hatching. The flit bed went on the nightstand next to her bed, with the items that had been on top of the dresser getting put carefully in the first drawer. Deciding the second drawer would be her flit’s drawer, once she cleared it out and rearranged the previous contents among the other drawers she arranged the flit’s items inside: the paint and glove for the moment, but would hold the rest of the flit related items later.

Keeping the rest of the items in the bag to take with her, Andreya scratched out a quick note on some scrap paper. Then the Harper gathered up some reading material, some hidework, and some other study materials...enough to keep the tall candidate busy in the common room for several candlemarks without her having to leave except for maybe dinner. Gathering everything up, the bag with the flit items, a shoulder bag with her study materials, the egg holder strap on the other shoulder, and the raw meat container, Andreya left her room. She first stopped by to leave the note on Shalia’s much larger bed, and then she settled herself into the smaller (and thankfully unoccupied) common room. Setting the egg pot on the hearth, glad to still feel some heat coming from the egg pot from earlier, Andreya settled herself comfortably on a couch next to the egg. Leaving the bag of flit items as well as the raw meat container easily within reach, Andreya instead pulled out some study material and began to read.

Anyone peeking into the small, out of the way common room would see Andreya sitting sideways on the couch, her long legs stretched out in front of her looking quite pretty in something *not* candidate yellow. A pretty brown skirt that's tight at the waist before it flowed out and fell a few inches higher up her legs than the candidate uniform’s skirt was spread carefully over her legs. Up top she wore a tightly fitted pale blue corset over a flowy white blouse that emphasized her narrow waist even as it stopped just below her bust to help push those curvy assets into the flowy blouse that was under the corset. The neckline of the blouse under the corset had been adjusted so that it left her shoulders bare, aside from the thick red braid sitting curled up on her collarbone (from Andreya having put her hair into a sideways ‘French’ braid earlier for meeting with T’rif). The Harper candidate’s outfit was complete with her favorite brightly patterned scarves tied around her long neck like choker and a thick belt that was slung low around her waist, and while her feet were bare the heeled slippers with ribbons to tie up the ankle securely were sitting carefully next to her bag on the floor nearby.

However, what was most unusual was that the candidate’s head was bent studiously over some reading material, which is very different than most other candidates who were taking advantage of the free day they had after yesterday’s Hatching…

((The note Andreya left on Shalia’s bed in clear view:

Shalia,

I’m in the smaller common room with a hearth if you are free and would like to come visit.

~Andreya))

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia had had a fairly busy morning herself.  She hadn’t wanted to get out of bed at all (nice warm, cozy bed with a beautiful naked sister that it was) but finally had to.  Her first stop had been the Dining Hall and a few other public places putting up notices about Lady’s extra eggs, saying to see her at R’tal’s office if interested in buying them.  Then had come the Candidate Barracks for a quick change before heading up to the Weyrleader’s office, on the assumption that as long as she kept showing up he wouldn’t say anything, because she was enjoying the work, for the most part.  Periodically somebody would show up to purchase an egg, and she’d quietly take them to Sarati’s weyr to pick one out, and lunch of course had been spent… well, not eating lunch.

After that she’d swung back through the Barracks.  She’d promised Andreya that she’d help her find a flit after the Hatching… and she had one for her.  It was just a green, but full Callamere heritage would help make up for that, and Sarati had been willing to part with one of Lady’s eggs for Shalia to give to her friend.

She first checked Andreya’s dorm, but didn’t see her there, so she headed up to her own room, planning on writing a note to the other girl and sending Noctis off with it… when she found Andreya’s note to her.  Chuckling, she set off, eggpot in hand, to the indicated common room.

“Hey, Andreya!” she said cheerfully, after taking a moment to take in the view.  She herself was still wearing the drab basic uniform, hoping that would help R’tal not notice her theoretical change in status and keep her around.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya had managed to distract herself from the mornings events entirely by getting totally absorbed into what she was reading. So, when Shalia did pop into the common room the harper-candidate was completely unaware and totally focused on the study reading. It took Shalia’s cheerful greeting for Andreya to lift her head, blinking confused for a moment at the other girl as she pulled herself out of the hides in front of her.

After those few blinks, however, Andreya shook off the confusion and said “Hey Shalia!” She leaned forward, unintentionally possibly giving Shalia a different view to admire, to put the study reading on the lowered table in front of the couch before she leaned back against the arm of the couch, hands smoothing her skirt down over her thighs. There was enough room for Shalia to sit down on the couch with her, without Andreya having to move her legs, but there were also other seats available as well as the option of Shalia sitting closer to Andreya and Andreya stretching her long legs out over Shalia’s lap (which, probably wouldn’t occur to Andreya to immediately do.)

As Andreya settled back against the couch’s arm, she glanced up at Shalia and was about to ask how her day’s gone when Andreya noticed the egg pot the other girl was carrying. Grinning, Andreya said “Oh! Did you get yourself a flit egg?”.

Then, her brain fully caught up with the change of thought out of the reading material and she remembered her new connection to the candidate in front of her. When that knowledge flashed through her brain again, there was a moment of ‘Oh shells! How do I tell her!’ that flashed over her face before the tall candidate’s expression shifted a bit. Now, where Andreya had been at ease with her friend, now there was...something there in Andreya’s blue/grey eyes that wasn’t quite as untroubled.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia, of course, chose the couch.  She just plain enjoyed being close to people.  She settled down carefully, turned so she was partially facing the other girl, with one foot tucked under the other leg and the egg pot in her lap.  “Nope,” she responded cheerfully.  “Well, yes, actually, I did, but this one’s for you,” she grinned, moving the pot so it was between the back of the couch and the other girl’s feet, though she was absolutely not taking her hands off it until Andreya took hold.

She was watching the other girl expectantly, so saw the change of expression, and her own smile faltered.  “Hey, what’s wrong, Andreya?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As Shalia approached the couch, when she sat at the end with the egg pot in her lap Andreya felt like she needed to give the other girl more space and so she bent her knees a bit and sat up with her arm on the back of the couch to support her so that her legs curled toward her a bit on the couch.

A frown crossed her face at Shalia’s ‘Nope’, but then she smiled as Shalia said she’d gotten an egg herself. When Shalia added that *this* egg was for her, Andreya’s mouth fell open in surprise as she glanced from the egg back up to Shalia. *Two eggs!* Oh shells! But of course Shalia wouldn’t know that the egg T’rif had gotten from her had been meant for Andreya...nor why.

Reaching out a hand to help steady the egg, at Shalia’s question Andreya gave a wordless shake of her head before saying “I...Shalia...oh shells…” That last was muttered by Andreya, who was annoyed with herself. Normally she was smooth and ‘harper-tongued’ not awkward and tongue-tied. Why did she have to be now?

Taking a breath, Andreya lifted her eyes up to look at Shalia and tried again saying “Shalia, thank you for thinking of me with an egg but I don’t think I can take it….I, well...I actually got one today myself…” Here she gave a small nod at the hearth and the egg pot sitting in front of it before she added in a softer voice still full of shock “...from my...my Dad…” Being able to tell someone, even someone now related to her, there was a small hint of relief in the harper’s voice as she said that last word. Her eyes, those blue/grey eyes, were focused on Shalia’s face to see what her reaction would be both to Andreya’s comments about probably not being able to take the egg...and then about her Dad.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia watched Andreya, concern in her eyes.  Something had happened to upset her, that was clear.  She wondered briefly if it was disappointment about not Impressing, but that didn’t seem right.  One of her hands moved down to cover Andreya’s on the pot as she waited for her to speak.

And then the other girl lifted her eyes and Shalia was struck once again by the vague feeling of familiarity in them, and spoke.  Her own green eyes widened.  “Your dad?  That’s… not wonderful, right?” she said carefully, trying to get a read on Andreya’s emotions.  She would definitely support them, she just needed to figure them out, but it definitely didn’t seem like it was all full of joy and happiness behind the shock.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When Shalia placed her hand on Andreya’s, the taller candidate hesitated for a few seconds before she turned her palm over and laced her fingers with Shalia’s being grateful for the others’ support.

Andreya watched Shalia’s eyes widen, sure that expression had been on her own face at least a dozen times today. At the other’s ‘your dad?’ question, Andreya nodded silently to confirm, but when Shalia asked if this was ‘not’ good Andreya froze for a moment staring at Shalia as if confused how the other girl could make that connection based on what Andreya had said...that she’d met her dad and he’d given her a flit egg.

Finally, shaking her head, Andreya answered saying “Yeah, my dad...And it’s good! Really...I’d stopped hoping I’d know...It’s just...just a bit of a shock *to* actually know. My mom’s never known who he was, remembering him but not remembering his name..Gather night celebration of her tailoring promotion, drinking, etc. She’s always felt so guilty about that, about not knowing so that she couldn’t tell him about me...Well, she saw him last night at the Feast…She was finally able to tell him about me.”

Taking a breath, not needing any help remembering the conversations she’s already had this morning, Andreya continued with “This morning...well, this morning she told me at breakfast. And...and I went and saw him just before lunch and we talked...and he gave me an egg. With everything else today, not just knowing who he is, and...and all the family I gain from him...a Callamere egg on top of that when he’d not even *known* about me before yesterday? Just...just so unexpected.”

Andreya said all this, leading up to the last piece, and was still holding onto Shalia’s hand and looking up at Shalia as she finished with “T’rifoshe’s my dad, Shalia.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia smiled as Andreya spoke, glad she’d misread the emotions.  “Oh good,” she murmured, giving the other girl’s hand a squeeze, before falling silent to let her speak.  She leaned forward a little, listening intently as she spoke about her mother running into him the night before, then telling her, and then meeting her father.

And then Andreya dropped the Threadshell.  Shalia’s eyes widened again.  “Oh.  Oh.  Oh!” she repeated as she worked through the implications.  She’d known that T’rif had a new-found daughter, he’d said it when asking for the egg, but he hadn’t given a name despite her and Sarati’s obvious curiosity.  Wanted it to be her choice to reach out, he’d said.

“That means you and I are…” she hesitated; they’d already worked out the relationship, but ‘first cousins once removed’ was just… clunky.  “Cousins,” she simplified.  Which might explain the other emotions, given how often and openly Shalia had flirted with the other girl, which if not necessarily reciprocated had at least been well-received.  Which… cousins.  Yeah, that would explain a lot of emotions.  Then she suddenly leaned forward, almost like she was going in for a kiss, but stopped well short to look into Andreya’s eyes, her own narrowing slightly.  “THAT’S why your eyes look so familiar!”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The hand squeeze from Shalia earned her a small smile even as Andreya explained. Watching Shalia as her eyes widened, she could see the exact moment the other girl realized what exactly it meant knowing T’rifoshe was her father. At the multiple ‘oh’s’ from the other girl, Andreya nodded in encouragement but stayed silent waiting for Shalia’s reaction to knowing Andreya was family...After all the flirting, after the admission of attraction in asking to kiss when the Hatching had been imminent, after everything.

Andreya was family...undeniably family.

When Shalia finally said ‘cousins’ Andreya had been about to correct the other girl when suddenly Shalia leaned forward quickly and stared into Andreya’s (now widened) eyes. Seeing the other candidate’s narrowed eyes as she stared directly into Andreya’s eyes, at the exclamation Andreya blinked before nodding and saying with a smile “Yes, exactly. I even remember thinking T’rifoshe’s eyes looked familiar when he interviewed me, but convinced myself my mind was playing tricks on me...Apparently not.”

Then, being the harper she was, she couldn’t help but add quite logically “And technically...Weyrwoman Kassia is my cousin...You, and your siblings are...cousin-like? Not second cousins, something like...1st cousin, once removed...whatever that means. It’s easier to say second cousins though even if it’s not technically fully right.”

Then Andreya fell silent a moment, before repeating in a voice full of complicated emotions, the main one being somewhat dazed (even though she’d had since breakfast to absorb this information), “I am Weyrwoman Kassia’s cousin…”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia leaned back and grinned, not letting go of the other girl’s hand as long as she wasn’t.  She knew well how comforting a simple touch could be.  “Yeah, I keep thinking your eyes seemed familiar without placing them.  But I haven’t looked into Uncle Triffy’s eyes nearly as much,” she joked.

She waved off Andreya’s explanation of their relationship, literally, using her free hand.  “‘Cousins’ is even simpler.  And if we’re getting technical, you and I aren’t even that,” she pointed out.  “Near-cousins at best.”  So if the other Candidate was feeling uncomfortable about the flirting and attraction… well, maybe that would help set her mind at ease.

Though possibly less so if and when she found out what Shalia had been doing with her sister the night before.

She gave the hand another squeeze as Andreya repeated the line about being the Weyrwoman’s cousin.  “I bet that just feels weird to say,” she said softly.  “How are you doing?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya mirrored Shalia, leaning slightly more against the back of the couch with one of her arms still braced across the top. Her other hand was still holding Shalias, not thinking about all the flirting the other girl had done in the past but more holding on because...because Shalia’s palm against hers felt solid and reassuring, holding her to the moment instead of letting her get carried away by it.

When Shalia mentioned not looking into T’rifoshe’s eyes as much as hers, Andreya couldn’t help but smile at that saying “Quite understandable.” As Shalia waved off the technical explanation she’d given, Andreya watched the other girl carefully and listened. At the ‘near-cousin’ correction, Andreya tilted her head to the side considering, remembering that Shalia had only been adopted by Kassia, that she wasn’t blood related to the Weyrwoman, and that ‘near-cousin’ actually made sense.

Smiling gratefully as she felt Shalia squeeze her hand again, Andreya couldn’t help but nod in reply saying “It really does, very weird.” After a pause she added in a much softer voice that rang true with it’s honesty “I...I don’t know. Really. I’m glad to know, to be able to have a relationship with T’rifoshe, that the guilt my mom’s always felt can finally fall away. But...I don’t know. It’s hard to reconcile everything I’ve learned just since *breakfast* today, to adjust to this new reality. I mean... It’s one thing to...to find out who your father is. But then to suddenly have so much *more* family than just a mom and a dad, my mom didn’t have any siblings so it’s always just been the two of us...And now there’s so many more...And for one of them to be so...to be such a prominent figure…”

Falling silent, Andreya glanced down at the hand on the pot, her hand holding Shalia’s, and took a moment to try to piece everything together, trying to figure out how to describe how she felt, and feeling frustrated at not being able to figure out the right words for the first time in her life. Letting out a small, frustrated breath, Andreya finally asked in that same soft voice, although this time with a hint of worry but not over her father, he’d already shown how he felt and that he was very kind. Instead the worry was for another new family member entirely “Can you tell me...what is she really like? The Weyrwoman? I mean...not her *as* the Weyrwoman, but...well...as family?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia returned her smile, then listened as Andreya talked about how she was feeling.  She didn’t say much, but just listened with sympathetic eyes.  This revelation had hit her hard; she could only imagine what it felt like for the other girl.  No wonder she’d seemed so shocked!  She suddenly had a whole slew of family that she hadn’t had when she woke up that morning.  ‘No,’ Shalia thought to herself, ‘I can’t imagine what she’s going through.’  But she could at least be there for her, to listen, to offer the other girl her support and friendship.

And then Andreya asked what her aunt was like.  Shalia hesitated, and then bought herself some time to think, and to try to separate her feelings at the moment about Foreth from how she felt about Kassia.  She let go of Andreya’s hand long enough to get up and move the pot over next to the other before sitting back down and taking hold again, all the while her mind churning.  “She’s… complicated,” she finally said, interlacing their fingers once more.  “I call her ‘Aunt Kassia’ but she’s always been ‘Mama Kass’ in my heart.  She’s as much my mother as she is my sisters’.  She’s always been generous and loving… at least to us girls,” she added a little wryly.  “Less so with the boys.”  In fact, there had been times in the past when she wasn’t entirely convinced the woman even remembered she had sons.

“I’ve never felt anything less than loved by her, and I’m sure Dad’s going to want to throw a huge family dinner or something when he finds out,” she added with a laugh.  “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you from him ‘til you’re ready.  But… Aunt Kassia’s always been there for me.  When I was upset about Sar moving to the Hold, she was the one I went to to hold me as I cried.”  Of course, the tears hadn’t been just about Sarati moving away, but Andreya didn’t need to know that yet.  And the habit of keeping her feelings about her sister to herself were hard to break anyway.  “She tried to talk Dad into letting me Stand before I was 15.  I know she’d do just about anything for me, let alone my sisters, and I’m sure she’s going to be happy as a dragon on a sunny rock to learn about you,” she assured her new-found cousin.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Watching Shalia after asking, she saw the other girl hesitate and her worry spiked up. When Shalia suddenly let go of her hand, Andreya took a breath to say something until she realized the other girl was just moving the egg pot. As Shalia moved the pot to the hearth, Andreya shifted on the couch pulling her legs closer to her. When Shalia not only returned to the couch and took her hand again but also sat closer to her Andreya gave the other girl a grateful smile.

Then the shorter candidate began talking and Andreya held her breath as she listened intently. Shalia got a small, albeit concerned, nod when she said ‘complicated’, and then a small, sad frown at the comment about Kassia with her boys. But then Shalia continued and Andreya fell still and continued listening.

However, when Shalia mentioned a ‘huge family dinner’, something she’d specifically asked T’rifoshe about earlier and been told didn’t happen, Andreya couldn’t help sucking in a breath of trepidation even as her hand tightened on Shalia’s. But when Shalia immediately followed that up with promised protection, Andreya relaxed...but only very slightly. As Shalia finished with assurances that Kassia would be happy to hear about Andreya, she gave Shalia a skeptical look but didn’t know enough to know if that was a correct assessment of how Kassia would actually feel about her.

Still, Shalia had indeed answered her questions, clearly showing that Kassia was...was very much able and willing to bend and show that she loved her children. That she wasn’t just ‘The Weyrwoman’, an elite figure of the Weyr, but was also Kassia, someone relatable and who’d be her family...her cousin...and who might not look at this newcomer to the family with scorn and disdain.

Taking a breath, trying to let herself be reassured by Shalia’s answer, Andreya said sincerely “Thank you...I realize that...that probably wasn’t the most polite question to ask as she...she is your Mom, your Aunt...so thank you. I do hope you’re right, that she’ll be happy to know about me. I was concerned. I mean, T’rifoshe was happy, quite enthusiastic actually, but I didn’t know how she’d feel about an unknown, nearly adult possible ‘interloper’ in the family.” And after a pause Andreya added in an attempt to lighten the mood just a touch “And yes, I’d appreciate waiting on a big family dinner...or at least enough warning so I can find the appropriate dress to wear.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When Andreya sucked in her breath and visibly tensed up at the mention of the family dinner, Shalia put her other hand on the girl’s knee and squeezed comfortingly.  As she’d said, she would keep her father from doing that.  At least not until Andreya was ready for it.

“Hey, we’re family now, Andreya, there’s no need to be polite,” she teased.  “I’d want to know, too.  And in fact, I do want to know about your mom, but I’m happy to wait,” she smiled reassuringly.  Kassia would have a whole lot bigger impact on the other Candidate’s life than a tailor at a hold would have on hers, after all.  Shards, so would the rest of the family, for that matter.  “And I’ll make sure you get plenty of warning to run for the hills before dinner,” she added, eyes twinkling.

“But Aunt Kassia, she’s… always been there, y’know?  So I don’t really think about our relationship much.  Once word gets out, though, expect people to suddenly try to get to know you, though,” she warned.  “Won’t be everyone, of course, but there’ll be at least some who think cozying up to the Weyrwoman’s cousin will benefit them somehow.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya gave Shalia another small grateful smile at the knee squeeze, and at the tease about family not needing to be polite the harper nodded in understanding. And then when Shalia mentioned wanting to know about *her* mom, Andreya gave her a surprised ‘Really?” look. At the other’s words about running for the hills, Andreya shot back with a grin “I’ll have to make sure to keep my good boots on me, not my slippered heels that’s for sure.”

When Shalia continued, Andreya nodded in understanding trying to think about how she’d describe her mother to the other girl when Andreya had *known* her mother her entire life. But when the shorter girl continued with a warning about people suddenly wanting to get to know her because of her new weyrwoman cousin, Andreya actually had considered that possibility herself. But hearing it from someone as an actual warning was different than just thinking it *might* be something she’d need to worry about.

In response to the warning, Andreya straightened up in her seat a bit as her spine stiffened. Shalia’s warning of people wanting to take advantage of being connected to Kassia was similar enough to her promise to herself not to be duped and hurt again that it brought forth a bit of the cold, distant, ‘Siren’ Harper she’d been before candidacy and Andreya lifted her chin a little saying “Thank you for the warning to guard against them.” Then, fighting down that feeling of needing to protect herself (there was no one here she needed to guard against, after all) Andreya gave Shalia a smile saying “But at least I know *you’re* not one of them, even if we weren’t near-related, cousin.”

 ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia giggled a little at Andreya’s response about the boots, glad that her friend, her cousin, was lightening up enough to make jokes, glad that she’d been able to be there to help out.

And then her demeanor… changed utterly.  Or at least significantly.  She straightened up, stopped being as warm and open, and instead looked like she’d walled herself off, and Shalia blinked at the metamorphosis, recognizing it as the same act she’d seen when an overly-eager Candidate (one not named Shalia, that is) had come on just a little too strongly.  But it didn’t last long, and if the other girl wasn’t quite back to herself (or at least the ‘herself’ that Shalia knew) yet, she also wasn’t quite so… icy.  But somehow, she didn’t think the taller girl would have too much of a problem with people trying to get to Kassia through her.  Giving her hand a squeeze, Shalia smiled back in response to Andreya’s.  “I dunno, I might be using you to get to your tailor mom,” she joked.  “Trying to get some free dresses.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya was slowly ‘melting’ as she sat there with Shalia, who she’d become friends with enough to feel secure. Her hand relaxed in Shalia’s and she nodded to the other girl’s comment adding “Oh, no problem there. Mom loves sending me clothes to wear, free advertisement of her skills after all. So I’m sure she’d be fine sending some designed clothes to you too. After all, we’d be wearing different styles to show off to people. As long as if they ask who designed it we direct them to Mom.”

Pausing, Andreya’s gaze wandered to the hearth for a moment and the harper remembered what Shalia had said at the very beginning: that she’d brought the egg for her! Turning to look back at Shalia, she said with an embarrassed smile “So...I was so dazed by T’rifoshe giving me a flit egg, just out of the blue like that, and it being a Callamere egg...that I didn’t even think to ask what color he’d been told it might be. I know there’s no guarantees, but there’s normally some pretty good guesses. He mentioned he’d gotten the egg from you, so maybe you know what color it might be? Oh! And you said you’d gotten one yourself? Another blue? I know how you love that color, and it would give Noctis a partner-in-crime...think of all the knots they could tie.”

That last part was said with a bit of a grin as she looked at Shalia before she added “Thank you, by the way, for thinking of me and getting an egg. I know we’d talked about flits. One flit just seems so...so amazing, I couldn’t *dream* of getting a second. Especially now...wouldn’t want people to think I was suddenly getting all kinds of perks being Kassia’s cousin, or T’rifoshe’s daughter….you know?” Even as she said all that, that it was *logical* to not have a second flit, that even getting one was totally amazing, there was a slight wistful note at the thought of what that second egg might hold inside.

Shalia chuckled.  “I’d be happy to send people to her!” she promised.  She hadn’t really been serious about getting free dresses, of course, and she wasn’t sure how serious Andreya was, but she certainly wasn’t going to turn them down.  Especially with a Gather coming up.

Then the other girl turned the talk to the flit eggs.  “Callamere is good at figuring out the colors inside the eggs, at least for their flits and whers.  And Sar’s Lady is a full Callamere, and so was the bronze who flew her, so these are basically Callameres even if we can’t call them that.  And according to them, that egg,” Shalia indicated the one she’d brought, “is only a green.  Sorry, I would’ve tried for a blue, but when it’s free you take what you can get, right?” she grinned.  Even at half-price, blues could be sold for enough more that she’d gone with a green.  “As for the other… when Uncle Triffy came to get it, he said it was for his new daughter,” she squeezed the other girl’s hand and gave a smile at that, “and only the best would do.  But he couldn’t have the best, because even though Lady had a gold, it was already claimed.  By me.”  This was said with a bounce which would have looked much better on the bustier Andreya, or even if Shalia hadn’t been wearing the awful button-up uniform shirt.  “So I’m sorry, but you’re having to settle for second best… a bronze.”

As Andreya spoke wistfully about possibly Impressing a second egg, Shalia grinned.  “People will wonder enough about that with the bronze, I’m not sure adding a green would make it that much worse.  But since you’re getting the other one, I’m sure Sar would want this one back to try to sell.  She was fine letting me have it to give to my friend, but as a second one?  I’m not so sure about that,” she chuckled.  Even if Andreya was family now.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Andreya grinned at Shalia’s excitement over possible dresses and replied with “I’ll have to give Mom a heads up, so that she makes sure to have quite a few samples of her fancier work available to be seen. Not that she doesn’t normally, but it never hurts to give her some extra warning.” With everything that had happened today, Andreya hadn’t considered if maybe she’d overexaggerated a bit, that a free dress would be a bit less likely to occur than a discounted dress would be.

When Shalia began to talk about flits, and Callamere specifically, Andreya couldn’t help the excitement in her eyes as she remembered what she’d heard about Callamere flits. When Shalia said the egg she’d gotten for Andreya was ‘only a green’, Andreya gave Shalia a look of surprise at the words and the way they’d been said. Andreya hadn’t expected any flit, so how could Shalia think she’d be upset at getting a beautiful green darling. She was about to reassure Shalia that she wasn’t upset in the slightest, in fact that she was honored Shalia had thought of her to begin with, but then Shalia continued speaking and all Andreya did was give Shalia’s hand a reassuring squeeze as she listened.

When Shalia continued by saying that T’rif had said the egg he was wanting was for his daughter, Andreya’s eyebrows lifted in surprise, but then she continued by saying ‘only the best would do’ and Andreya sucked in a quick shocked breath as her eyes darted to the egg pot. She’d thought he might have given her a blue egg, or even a nice steady brown, thinking that T’rif would have avoided giving his daughter a green egg knowing she’d feel the green flit’s Flight emotions. She was thunderstruck that he’d asked for the *best* egg, before she’d even come to see him as his daughter. Oh shells. She’d opened the pot to check the sand, but hadn’t dared to do more than that not wanting to harm the egg, so she’d not seen it’s shell yet. Had she *really* been carrying a Callamere gold flit egg around with her since lunch? Surely T’rifoshe would have told her if it had been a gold egg!

Before she could work herself up much more in her state of amazement, Shalia’s next words washed over her, that while Sar’s Lady had indeed had a gold, that Shalia herself had already claimed the egg for herself. Turning from her egg on the hearth to look at Shalia, listening as Shalia apologized for claiming the gold and saying that instead Andreya’s egg was a bronze one. As she focused back from the egg to look at Shalia there was not a hint of anything but complete happiness for her ‘near-cousin’ on the Harper’s face as she exclaimed out before Shalia could speak again “You didn’t get another blue then, you’re going to get a gold? That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you!” Then, so happy for the other girl’s luck, Andreya leaned forward and impulsively hugged Shalia tightly saying “Really, that’s so incredible!”

Then, after releasing Shalia, Andreya gave a totally understanding (and still a bit dazed) nod to the other’s words about what people would think and what Sar would want done with the egg. When Shalia finally finished, Andreya, putting aside that previous wistfulness she’d had, replied happily with “Oh, of course she should have it back! And I’d not have minded a green, not at all! I’d have loved a darling little green girl, but I didn’t expect any egg even though we’d talked about it before! And…T’rif got me a bronze? He was trying to get me a gold egg? I can’t believe that! When he told me he got me an egg, which had overwhelmed me already, I thought it was a blue… *maybe* a brown, but I never imagined anything higher colored.” Giving a amazed shake of her head, Andreya continued with “But yes, of course she should have the egg back. No way could I have a second one, it took T’rif a bit to convince me to accept the first egg! I hope you and Sar are able to find someone amazing for the green.”

Then she went back to the other surprising news and grinned at Shalia as she asked “And a gold for you. That’s wonderful! How long have you been wanting and waiting for one from Sar’s Lady?”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Shalia looked a little surprised that Andreya was going to give her mother a heads up about the dresses; maybe she hadn’t been joking about that after all?  “Well, when we do let Dad do his family dinner, you’ll have to invite her to join us,” she suggested.  She was now part of the extended family as well, after all.  “I bet Aunt Kassia will want to commission something… but tell your mom not to dare offer her a discount,” she giggled.  Unlike a lowly Candidate, a Weyrwoman could afford to pay full price.

She watched the other girl’s reaction as she spoke about Callameres in general and these eggs in particular.  Andreya was definitely excited about getting one, and she was glad she’d asked Sar for an egg, even if it did turn out to be unnecessary.  Shalia guessed at the thought that must have accompanied the near-gasp and quick look at the pots in the brief time it took to say that she wasn’t getting a gold, but there wasn’t even a hint of jealousy when Andreya found out who was.  She returned the hug happily; she’d always been a hugger by nature, and with them sitting, it was somewhat less awkward than a standing hug, given their height difference and what was right at face level for Shalia.  Plus it was the first hug since Shalia had admitted wanting to kiss Andreya and gotten a slightly confused ‘...give me some time…’ in return, so it was nice if those were back on the table.  Even if it was because of them being near-cousins.  “Yeah, I’m really excited,” she said as the hug ended, eyes dancing happily.  “I’ve been wanting one forever, but the timing just never worked out right for various reasons.”

“And I did tell you I’d help you get an egg after the Hatching,” Shalia reminded her teasingly.  “Admittedly I expected it to take a little longer, but I like to keep my promises.  I didn’t think you’d mind a green in the slightest, though,” she smiled.  And a Callamere green was at least as good as a wild blue which would have been about what could have been expected otherwise.  Maybe a brown at best, but chances would have definitely heavily favored green or blue.  “I dunno if Uncle Triffy was actually looking to get you a gold, he didn’t even really get a chance to ask about it, but he did want the best available.  I think he figured a brown himself, but he was happy to get a bronze to give you.  And he wouldn’t tell us your name, just so you know, he wanted that to be your call,” she added.

She gave another happy bounce as Andreya asked about her gold.  “For Turns now, ever since Sar got Lady,” she admitted.  “I didn’t want just any gold, I wanted one of her golds.  Sar was getting worried about how long it was taking for Razelth’s clutch to hatch,” she laughed.  “She was afraid she was going to have to find another home.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"It's always exciting here," Kashara said with a shrug. "If they found out what happened with the attempted attack, my mom never told me. I hope that whoever it is doesn't try again."

"I take it your mother is among the first to hear such news?" That likely should not be a surprise, given her uncle was on the Candidatemaster's staff.

"Well, I guess that depends what you're looking to do," Raelah
answered.  "A lot of people enjoy swimming, especially being so warm
and sunny here.  Hookball is pretty popular with the candidates and
weyrbrats.  There's Harpers for music, dancing, card games and the
like.  Heck, I've even put on a couple of shows since coming here, but
that's more to keep my hand in than anything else.  Don't want to get
out of practice."

"Music, dancing, and shows are my kind of fun!" Sehrael said cheerily. That was the kind of venue where people enjoyed beverages. She was going to have to get in touch with whoever facilitated the drinking at the weyr and make that her gainful employment when the Candidatemaster had nothing else for her to be about. She knew how to mix a decent drink.

If she built a relationship there, she would be one step closer to establishing a connection with whoever supplemented the territory's tithes with additional beverages... Surely, the weyrfolk consumed more than the tithes covered.
