Can You Help? atten: Calyse/Kashara

sailyn2

Calyse had only started getting used to the layout of the Weyr, and truth be told, many of the tunnels still seemed labyrinthine while she navigated through them. This meant she was lost nearly as often as she knew where she was, but she couldn't give up, wouldn't give up! She was near the Infirmary, of that Calyse was certain, though just precisely *how near* was beyond her.

When she spotted a girl moving through the halls wearing the same awful yellow uniform, Calyse felt a rush of relief. At least she would not be lost for very much longer. As she turned to approach, she noticed the crutches on which Kashara moved and blinked in surprise. "Oh! You're hurt!" She exclaimed before she could think better of it, clapping a hand over her mouth in embarrassment. "S-sorry, that's-- that's a terrible way to say hello."

“It’s okay,” Kashara assured her. “I don’t believe we’ve met. I’m Kashara. You weren’t heading back to the Barracks, were you? Could you help me carry my books back?”

"Oh, um, I was actually, so I wouldn't mind at all." Calyse smiled faintly, a twitch at the corners of her lips as she reached to take the aforementioned books. "I'm Calyse. I-I'm a bit new still. Having a hard time navigating. Thought I might lose my, um, my mind before I found my way out again. As long as you know the way there, I can carry."

Kashara passed over the books and gave a little sigh of relief. It was still tough getting around and juggling books didn’t help.

“It takes a while to get used to here,” Kashara said. “Or so I’m told. I was born here. I’ll show you a shortcut, but tell me about yourself.”

She started off to lead the way.

Re: Golden Gifts or Twin Troubles? ((Attn: Calyse, Heersofali, Ozfini, Yeha, Miacca))

"I mean, isn't that true for any Rider, no matter what color dragon they've Impressed? At least starting out when the dragons haven't learned their limits. Don't Golds just take it to a more extreme level and don't tone it down as they grow up?" Miacca glanced toward Yeha, to see if she'd have an answer to that.
"Oh, there's definitely truth to that," Yeha answered, seeing the
glance her way. "Granted, all dragons are different, but there are
plenty that are strong-willed, and it's up to the rider to keep them
in line. There's a reason that the Weyrlingmaster and the assistants
and their dragons keep such a close eye on the new pairs. Impression
anxiety is a very real thing, and a very dangerous thing, and you can
lose Weyrlings to it because the human half panicked, or lost control,
and cause their dragons to panic and go Between. That's why, once you
Impress, you are watched very, very closely for even the slightest
sign of trouble, to help those pairs out. I'm sure that Weyrwoman
Kassia will be able to better answer what a weyrling gold would be
like, when she delivers her lecture. For all that I have a dragon, a
blue is not a gold, and there are some things I can't actually give
true insight to."

"That's tremendous!" Sehrael said cheerily. "I get a bit of moving about and a bit of staying, so looks like this is going to be my bit of staying for a while. Your troupe must have a drink supplier already, I'm sure, but I'd bet marks to muffins we could get you a better deal if they might be interested."
Raelah couldn't help but let a quick chuckle escape at that offer.
Not that she could say that it might not be true; she personally
didn't have anything to do with supplies and requistions for the
caravan, so she had no idea what sort of contracts they had going.
But it was a bold offer, to be sure.

"Couldn't tell you one way or another," Raelah admitted. "I don't
have anything to do with that part of the troupe. And I don't know
just what sort of contracts they have going on, to be honest. But I'm
not opposed to passing along the message, if you want me to. Might be
your family carries something our regular supplier doesn't. Either
way, it's no bad thing to take a look at."

That Was Intense! (Attn: Kashara/Mendl)

Laurie

The Weyrwoman had given Mendl permission to stay on the Sands to keep an eye on Foreth, but she didn't say anything about not talking to anyone--especially if they were there.

She hadn't had a chance to get to know Kashara well, but now was as good a time as any, since she was there, having brought M'gal and T'rif, and the ice for Foreth. So, keeping one ear out for any distress Foreth could be in she walked over to her fellow candidate.

"Hi, I've seen you in classes. I'm Mendl. Thanks for being so quick. Poor Foreth has gone through so much." She'd forgotten that she was covered in all kinds of birthing goop, but in a way didn't care. To her, it was a badge of honor.

"I might have," Kashara said. "I wasn't really looking and I got around but with a lot of help. Glad to have you here though. I guess that's not when you were Searched?"

"Not quite, but it wasn't too long after that," said Sehrael. "We were on our way back to the Hold to get ready for the next caravan. That's about how it goes. Spend a bit of time at home, a bit of time on the road. My da said I should take the opportunity to see the Weyr, so I took him up on it."

"Me and the ladies here spent most of the Gather working, actually,"
Raelah admitted.  Any drinks she had usually came from the Caravan's
private stock.  Why pay for a drink when she had perfectly drinkable
wine at home.  Oh, she'd treat herself to a fancier drink every once
and awhile, but she hadn't had much chance this past gather.

"I'm circus folk, myself.  Family, too.  We've traveled all over the
North and South.  Got my own act with the girls here, even.  Its been
a change, staying in one spot for so long.  At least its not dull, I
can say that much."

"Oh, little o' this, little o' that. I learned my da's trade at the Hold," said Sehrael. "No formal craft stamp of approval for me, but I learned how to help him do his work, making booze and sellin' it here and there. Maybe you saw our wares at the Gather, though with all that commotion, I wouldn't be surprised if no one remembers much else."

"Nice to meet you, Sehrael," Raelah replied with a smile.  "And
welcome to the Weyr.  I'm Raelah and these two ladies are Cecin and
Celon, and yes, they're definitely a handful.  Very well trained
handfuls, at least.  May I ask, Holdborn?  Or crafter?

Again, whilst he might have been mortified to know it, there was that almost pitying look in R'tal's eyes. Fighting with one leg, perhaps, in time, but when you couldn't use both your hands?

Still, there was no point taking away the poor man's hope.

"I'll think on it," he promised. "In the meantime, what's your situation with the Healers? Are you fully on rest or do you need occupying?"
Well, that was fair. And there was plenty of time to figure out that
bridge when they came to it. N'yx wasn't ready to give up on the hope
of returning to fight Thread, if not soon, then at least someday down
the line.

"The healers seem to think I'm doing a lot better than when I first
came," N'yx answered. "Seems your southern sun does wonders for
problems brought on by too much cold. They said I could be out and
about, so long as I didn't push things too fast. But, I'm at loose
ends as to what I could be doing."

"Pretty sure there's a saying somewhere about wide nets catching
better fish or something like that," N'yx mused.  "I just didn't want

Could be they could point some likely fellows in my direction, that I

Re: Eyes Open for Opportunity! (attn: Sehrael, Raelah)

Jerzy Tobin

Sehrael had never been inside the Weyr before. She had not been properly prepared for how big it would be. Practically unlimited room compared to what she was used to. Sleeping in a traveling wagon had nothing on this.

Of course, there was far less in the way of privacy, both in sleeping quarters and in bathing, but despite having the wagon to retreat to, Sehrael was used to being in close quarters with many people – enough that this was not too uncomfortable an adjustment. It was only for a few Turns, anyway, and then she could get something more like the crafters got.

In these first few days, she meant to start building her connections. Meeting the right people meant meeting everyone and sorting it out later.

"Ho, there!" she said to the first folks she saw.
"Heyla," Raelah answered back, looking up from what she had been
doing. Namely, oiling the pair of green flits draped across her.

Sleepless Night Att: Andronda/D'jarin

Jerzy Tobin

Another night, another nightmare. It was impossible to say just how
long Andronda had tossed and turned in her bed, but one thing was
clear: she would not be getting back to sleep. Besides being still
too hot and sticky to be comfortable, it seemed that every time she
closed her eyes she was once again trapped in that crowd, and
everywhere she turned there were knives there waiting for her. Shard
it all, *she* hadn't even been the one to be attacked! So why did she
have to suffer nightmares from it?

'Because you could be next,' she thought to herself savagely. She was
a gold rider, after all. Well, lying there wasn't getting her
anywhere, so Andronda pushed herself out of bed. If she couldn't
sleep, she might as well go for a walk. And since it was night time,
she decided to bring Pochi with her. A walk would do the little
wherpup some good as well.

Outside, the air was still hot and humid, but at least there was a
slight breeze. Overhead heat lightning flickered in the clouds, but
it brought no relief or hint of an actual storm that might help cool
things off.

((Person come!)) Pochi declared, the blue wherpup placing himself in
front of Andronda. ((Pochi not know person.))

"Hello?" Andronda called out. Perhaps it wasn't as late as she had
thought, if she wasn't the only one about. Then again, hot as it was,
there were probably plenty of people who couldn't sleep.

"Well, we wipe out half their apprentice stock most Hatchings. They should be used to it by now," R'tal said pragmatically as though K'ren hadn't occasionally complained of exactly that. "Besides, they occasionally get one that the craft doesn't suit for whatever reason. But if that worries you, by all means try the Candidates. Or the staffers even."

"Basics," Kashara said. "I'm recovering from a broken leg and while I was still in the Infirmary I decided I wanted to switch to the dragonhealing craft from beastcraft. So I have a lot to learn. What's your craft? Where are you from?"

"Ah, sorry to hear that," said Sehrael with a wince. Broken leg seemed like quite the kink in the works. And switching to an entirely new craft? Well. She supposed there had to be some overlap there. "I'm a trader and a distiller," she said. "From a fair-to-middling-sized Hold a ways down the road. You might have seen us at the Gather last, though I suppose if you were laid up with that leg of yours, you might not have gotten out our way, eh?"
