Re: Party: Things Are Different Here. attn Kashara / Ronhim

What did he want to talk about? Yeah, that was the hard part. Ronhim had trouble putting his jumbled thoughts into words. For a long moment he pondered that and then studied Kashara for a moment more. She seemed nice and he was grateful for her time. How best to sum up what he needed to know?

"I guess guys like that can be accepted here," he said with a nod. Truth be told that suited him just fine. While he wasn't attracted to men himself he had never really understood why others mistreated the men who did. Maybe he was just more understanding since he too had been generally neglected and mistreated.

"So I guess...I hope...that everyone is accepted? Even if they aren't so smart or can't always find the right words?  Can somebody like me really find a dragon on the sands? And make a place here doing something important?"

Deep down, though he didn't have the words to express it, Ronhim was just looking for acceptance and a chance to better himself. He just didn't know yet how to get that and all the new things he was seeing here made his head spin.

"Well, we wipe out half their apprentice stock most Hatchings. They should be used to it by now," R'tal said pragmatically as though K'ren hadn't occasionally complained of exactly that. "Besides, they occasionally get one that the craft doesn't suit for whatever reason. But if that worries you, by all means try the Candidates. Or the staffers even."

Kashara nodded. "Very true. There's competition, but it seemed to happen more as they got older than when they were real young. Or so I've heard. Obviously I wasn't there to witness what happened when they were in their Weyrling classes and all."
"They ended up with more of a rivalry than anything," Yeha commented.
"Not outright fighting, mind, because the WeyrlingMaster and
Assistants, not to mention the Weyrwoman, would have shut that down
right quick. But, there are other ways of having a rivalry. And
golds, being golds, think that they're the most important, and that
what *they* want should be what goes. It was an interesting time, and
will be for this next lot, too."

As much as Foreth needed her, especially with the eggs, Kassia had to get out of the Caverns sometimes. The Caverns were hot and claustrophobic and even distracted by the eggs, Foreth was still being a pain in Kassia's rear end. Plus Brogan needed to get out now that he couldn't play on the Sands any more. So Kassia took a walk every morning. The bronze was obediently at her side when he spotted the man and his baby blue.
~Twolegs and other wher~ he alerted, though Kassia could see them, too.

"Hello?" she called out. <<

Petiner paused at the voice glancing down at the little blue to make
sure he paused too, but that had seemed to be one of the easier
lessons to get the little wher to learn. Refocused on the voice though
it took him a second longer than he liked to recognize the Weyrwoman
and her wher Brogan before replying. "Good morning Weyrwoman Kassia,
and good day to you Borgan." he offered the pair formally before
turning his attention to the little wher "Say hello to the Weyrwoman
and her wher." he instructed.

The little blue wiggled in place hunger temporarily forgotten in the
face of new people (('lo!)) He greeted the bronze and woman happily
((Shin')) he added focusing at the much larger wher fascinated. The
bronze was so shiny! He had spotted a couple of the little things his
Pet called Firelizards that were that shiny and there were some around
the place they lived, but he lived seeing new shiny things. Though he
had quickly learned he couldn't bring the shinies back to his Pet when
they were so big much to his sorrow didn't mean he didn't still
consider it.

Petiner inwardly cringed at the loud greeting, was it actually /that/
loud no, but to Pet who prefered to go as unnoticed as he could it was
far to loud "Sorry Weyrwoman, we are working on volume." he explained.

It seemed like a good idea at the time! {Petiner, any}

Kouga

(ooc: set 28.07.20)

Petiner couldn't help just watching the small bundle of blue hide. The
little blue would be a month old in six days and he still didn't know
what he was doing, or at least felt like he didn't.

He had promised himself that the little wher wouldn't suffer because
he suddenly wasn't so sure about his idea, but what seemed simple in
words seemed so hard in practice. He could feel the blue's hunger in
his guts, hear the tiny voice in his head, taste the raw meat as it
was chewed only just enough and swallowed. These were not pleasant
things and while he had been reassured a couple of times it would get
easier to block these things out, and that he should be glad the tiny
thing wasn't a dragon as it was worse with them this was far more than
he knew how to cope with.

In truth Pet couldn't help wondering if 'impression anxiety' was a
thing you could get with more than just dragons and if it was how you
fixed it. He wasn't going to hurt the little bundle of hide over his
issues. At the same time though the playfulness and giddness were not
things he enjoyed. These were not normal states for the young guard
and he didn't like them. How could he properly stand guard or patrol
if he was /giddy/ all the time?

In short he didn't like the /very/ forgen feelings the little wher was
forcing him to feel no matter how muted they may be compared to a
dragon bond. It also meant he was very happy he had managed to escape
impressing a dragon all those turns ago. He had done his duty and been
a candidate when he was needed, now he was what he needed himself to
be a guard. Even if he was currently a guard questioning his own
choices.

Little eyes blinked open and a blue head cocked his direction. It
looked like it was waiting for something, or maybe looking for
something, Pet wasn't sure honestly. What he did know was that colour
in those eyes and the gnawing in his insides, the little wher was
hungry. He glanced behind him before nodding, yes he should be good to
get the blue out and to the food. He had intentionally made it so they
had to walk every day after the first seven to get food to try and
help with control. He knew staving off hunger was not going to be the
best, but he thought it was good patience training which the little
bundle of hide of need as the partner to a guard and he had been
advised that as long as he didn't push it he should be good.

Once the little wher had gotten to his feet Pet quickly secured a
leash to him and they were off out of the guards barracks and just a
short walk away where he had stashed the little wher's breakfast.

ooc: anyone wanna come meet the little guard with his baby wher? His
baby wher that he is trying hard to decide why he thought it was a
good idea to get while know said wher will be good to have as a
guard....

She didn't take offense at his confusion which Ronhim greatly appreciated. He didn't mean to offend anyone or to seem too confounded by the ways of the Weyr but they were most surely different than what he had known back home. Then again, life back home hadn't been so kind to him. Maybe it was time he learned some new ways and tried to fit in here.

"Learn more? Yes, I want to learn more," he agreed in a sheepish tone."

He watched the two men as they made their way out of the crowd and then turned his attention back to Kashara.

"I don't want to be a burden or keep you from the party but I do want to talk. And not just about that. Everything seems different and confusing here and I want to fit it. I just don't know how yet."

The confession came out in a mini torrent of words. His confusion was apparent in the tone of his voice and, despite his protests that he didn't want to interrupt the party he hoped Kashara could spare him a few minutes to get it off his chest.

"My name is Ronhim by the way. New candidate from Arolos Hold."

Re: Party: Pardon My Clumsiness attn Miacca / Ronhim

She didn't seem offended by his bumping her which relieved the big fellow a great deal. It also made him a bit self conscious though. He wasn't the sort of person most folks talked to. No, from his experience he was generally treated more like the furniture:  quiet and off in a corner till somebody needed something lifted out of the way. His Harper friend had been trying to teach Ronhim to be more out going and sociable but the lessons weren't coming easy to him.

"I'm glad I didn't hurt you," he said in a quiet tone raising his eyes to look at her and almost immediately blushing. She really was very pretty and that fact flustered him even more and made it harder to find the words he wanted. "I'm kind of clumsy some times."

He gave her a bit of a timid smile when she said her name.

"Miacca. It's a very pretty name."

Kashara raised an eyebrow. "You want them to attack each other? That's a horrible thought. You could have two dead golds. They tried showing their dominance other ways."

Re: Browns Are Always Best ((Attn: K'sway, Calyse))

Calyse smiled wryly at his mention of northern water, nodding in agreement even as she began wringing out the hem of her tunic. "Little colder up there, y-yes. I'll take the lake here any day over the pools in Benden. Shame about the towels, I-I'll warn you next time."

As the soapsand hit her shoulder, Calyse regarded the helpful green with a bark of surprised laughter. "Oh, you sweet thing," she giggled, brushing it off with the back of her hand. To K'sway's idea, she agreed immediately. "I don't think I'll take too long to dry, n-not in this heat."

Without waiting for him to lead the way, she turned toward the shore and waded quickly out of the water, still shaking it free with each swing of her arms. "Don't be sorry, it-it's fine. Really. No harm done."

Oh so helpful, PrettyGirl chirped and dumped a tiny pawful of soapsand on Calyse's shoulder. "Hey!" K'sway scolded, then motioned to the shore. "You want to sit and sun on the shore a little? Maybe dry off? Sorry about that."

Re: Golden Gifts or Twin Troubles? ((Attn: Calyse, Heersofali, Ozfini, Yeha, Miacca))

"...Oh," Calyse replied, sounding slightly disappointed to hear there hadn't been much drama on the Hatching Sands. She had been expecting, well, something more exciting, at least. They both made it sound so tame. "Well, I suppose that's good. I-I guess I thought they would be more.. more ferocious with each other or something. Stressful, though, that doesn't surprise me. Guess Where I Was Yesterday? (Attn: Dytha/Mendl)

Laurie

Mendl got back to the Candidate Barracks tired, dirty...and elated. She would happily miss every party in the future if she got to experience this type of thing every time. Imagine! She saw all of Foreth's eggs laid. She saw the two gold eggs! She got to hold (well, briefly) one of the two gold eggs.

Granted, she wouldn't wish this on Foreth ever again, but, well, shards and shells!

She went into the bathing pool in the Barracks to wash off the dirt and fluids. She felt so grubby, but she didn't care.

The pool in the Candidate Barracks was always the perfect temperature, but when Mendl fell asleep and fell under the water, spluttering her way back to air, she decided it was time to sleep. Some candidates were quietly talking; some were still at the party. She just wanted to go to bed.

The next morning, the first thing she did was seek out Dytha. Her friend had to be dying to know what Mendl experienced!

Re: So, I Have An Idea... Att: R'tal/N'yx

So, there's something things that I was thinking about, both short
and long term, that tie into each other.  Obviously, I'm not flying
Fall, nor will I be for quite some time."  There was an ache in his
voice that said just how badly that weighed on him; that it might
before forever was something he didn't want to consider.  Not yet.
"But, I'm hoping that maybe we can work out some sort of solution down
the line that can see us back in active duty, in some capacity at
least.  And, in the meantime, there are still regular duties, like
sweep riding and the like that even one handed I could still do.

But - and this is the first thing I really wanted to ask you about -
is that even sweep riding and non-combative duties require maintaining
flight gear and straps, something I am going to have more than a
little trouble with.  I was wondering if it's allowable to...well,
take on an assistant, I guess I would call them?  Someone to help me
out with straps, and harnessing Ostibeth, and maybe going out with us
on sweeps and the like?"

He had briefly thought of the idea of having a partner to help him
during Threadfall, but both he and Ostibeth had tossed that idea out
just as promptly.  It was all a rider could do to keep track of his
dragon and himself; if a second person with them got hit, there'd be
no real way to keep track of it the way Dragon and Rider did through
their bond.

R'tal was quiet for a minute, thinking that through.

"I've not got a problem with that," he said after a long moment. "But you are going to need to find the right person. Anyone who has a personality that doesn't quite gel - it's going to become more abrasive very quickly." He paused, considering it. "Why don't you start by asking for help with washing Ostibeth?
