Rionnon waited while the rider drank the juice, her head cocking slightly when Yeha finished it in one go. "Makes sense. I don't really have that much experience with heat, it's my first summer away...from...Bitra Hold. So feeling baked is a bit new to me."
"Ah." That made sense. "I was born and raised here in the South.
So, while heatwaves like this aren't common, they're not unheard of by
any means. One rolls through every so often. Hopefully it won't
linger."

Mendl splashed oil on her hands and arms, and generously around Foreth’s cloaca. “This is going to hurt, but then again, you may not notice considering all the hurt you’ve been going through up until now.”  She eased a hand up the canal, feeling the egg.

“Oooh, it’s a big one. There’s going to be a big bronze, I’ll bet. But the problem is, it twisted and he’s trying to come out sideways, the silly boy.” Gently she eased her other hand in, glad that dragons were so large. Hands on each side of the egg, she gently but quickly rotated it.

“Now let’s see if this will come out on his own, or if I need to pull,” Mendl said, quickly withdrawing her arms.

Foreth screamed as Mendl rotated the egg and Kassia ducked as she just missed getting swatted by her tail. The scream died off into loud pants and a groan. For a minute nothing seemed to happen, then the egg advanced close to the entrance, Foreth’s breaths coming harder and harder. Just short, the egg stopped again.

“I think we need to pull,” Kassia said after a moment. “Let me get this side, you get that side.”

“I promise. I won’t hurt your egg. I took care of you for the past sevendays, and didn’t hurt you, did I?” Mendl asked, keeping up a stream of chatter to distract the gold.

Down by Foreth, she carefully gave a wide berth to the eggs which had already been laid. She’d lost count, but was sure it was more than twenty. “You’ve done so much work today, you deserve a rest. I think your body’s overly tired. I know you don’t eat a lot after laying these eggs, but I’m sure you’d like a nice small herdbeast or something to snack on, wouldn’t you?”

She stopped just short of Foreth’s cloaca and rubbed the dragon’s abdomen. Yep, there was an egg stuck there. For firelizards she could make them sit in warm water, but she doubted that there was a bowl big enough for Foreth. So she did the next best thing, and pulled out a large bladder of oil from her med-bag.

“I know you’re scared, but Kassia said you’ve been through this before. So you know that if you don’t let me help you, your egg could be in more danger. I’d call Master Larsin, but I’ve got small hands and believe me, that’s what you want in this situation.”

Kassia came around to the other side while Foreth just groaned uncomfortably up ahead. “Let me know if I can help pull,” Kass said. “Let’s just hurry.” She watched her lifemate with a concerned eye. If this went wrong, the loss of the egg would be the least of their problems.

Re: (Clutching) Why Kassia Missed Her Party atten: Foreth/Truenoth/Talith/Mendl #clutching Part 18 #clutching

“She knows when she’s at the last one?” Mendl asked, then almost slapped herself. Of course she did. “Sorry, stupid question.”

A good fifteen minutes went by. She watched for a moment longer, her brows knitting together. “Isn’t this one taking longer than the others?” she asked.

“She just laid a couple pretty quickly back to back, let’s give her a minute to catch her breath.” Kassia was relieved that Foreth seemed pretty sure they were close to done. She wasn’t surprised that Foreth needed a break.

Another fifteen minutes went by and Foreth was starting to look stressed. She got up and twisted circles, laid down, and then got up over and over again. Kassia could feel the stress ramping up at the back of her mind.

“Mine?” Kassia called tentatively. “You okay?”

((I’m...fine...)) the Queen said, her normal refrain sounded very strained as she arched into position, but nothing came.

“She needs help,” Mendl said with surety. She didn’t like to give orders to--oh, who was she kidding, she loved giving orders to most people. Not the Weyrwoman, though. But something was obviously wrong. It had been almost 30 minutes of straining, and nothing was happening. It could be as simple as Foreth’s muscles being tired. But she couldn’t keep that egg inside her--there was a reason they needed to come out.

“Foreth, I’m coming down,” she said, gathering her things, though most likely she’d be arm-deep inside Foreth. This would be both easier and harder than with a flit.

((NO!)) Foreth protested, the word fast, but tired and missing some of the vigor of usual.

“Love, we have to help you,” Kassia soothed, moving ahead of Mendl. If Foreth repeled her too much, then Mendl would never get close enough, better to try first. “There might be a stuck egg. You need to get it out.”

((You might hurt something!)) Foreth’s voice was tinged with fear now. Even awkwardly positioned for the next egg, she started scrambling around to pull her eggs closer under her body, the gold the highest priority.

“You keep your eggs up there. I’ll come with Mendl and we won’t go near any of the other eggs. And as soon as the egg seems to be moving on its own, we’ll leave it. Okay?”

There was a long stand off before Foreth lowered her head. ((Be careful. Don’t hurt my egg.))

Kassia turned to Mendl. “Hurry.”

Re: (Clutching) Why Kassia Missed Her Party atten: Foreth/Truenoth/Talith/Mendl #clutching Part 18 #clutching

Foreth was losing energy again, but she dutifully settled her eggs under her before she took a break. Kassia was content to sit there with Mendl and just watch the Queen for as long as it took.

Sunlight gave way to the light of the full moon coming in from outside and the glows that stood around the Caverns. The feeling became a lot more intimate as the lower light shown off the Sands.

In time Foreth was at it again and after some grunting another egg laid on the Sands. In the lower light, it was hard to see what was going on in the mess of dark colors, but Kassia thought she saw the glint of sharp teeth.

The next egg came immediately after and ended up in a spot highlighted by a glow. The outside was light green and looked almost like sparkling water.

“Surely she’s done now,” Kassia whispered only to be proven wrong about ten minutes later when another dark blue, watery looking egg came out.

((One...more...)) Foreth panted as she took care of the last egg, her movements belabored.

Re: (Clutching) Why Kassia Missed Her Party atten: Foreth/Truenoth/Talith/Mendl #clutching Part 17 #clutching

A second load of ice came in about that point and at Kassia’s urging Foreth took a little bit more to cool her body and give her some liquid before settling down to regain herself. The sun had gone down by that point and things were beginning to slowly cool down. The general feeling was calmer.

After a bit she started up again and Kassia wondered how long the Queen could keep at it but soon two more eggs appeared. First came out an egg with a clawed foot painted across the front and then one covered in feathers.

“They look like they’re related,” Kassia murmured.

When two more followed a short time later, those eggs looked related as well. One had the look of an algae covered lake while the other seemed to peer down into the depths of deep ocean water.

“Okay love, take a break,” Kassia urged.

Re: (Clutching) Why Kassia Missed Her Party atten: Foreth/Truenoth/Talith/Mendl #clutching Part 16 #clutching

M’gal was at Kassia’s party, wondering what was keeping her. About the same time that the news of Foreth’s Clutching began to circulate, Kashara found him and requested him to get ice for Foreth. A bit pale, he immediately called Oz. They stopped by the infirmary for some large empty oil drums to fill with ice from the mountains, grabbed a wandering candidate, and they were gone.

Maybe he should have waited for T’rifoshe, but the rider knew what to do, so why wait? For all he knew, T’rif had already gone.

It was cold, but worry kept him warm as he and the candidate filled the drums. He didn’t even ask their name. But with two of them, they made short work of their ice-haul. Another short hop, and they were at the Caverns.

Word was sent as soon as they arrived. By then Kassia had done the heavy lifting in convincing the laying Queen to let the help arrive and the ice to be brought in.

“Let’s help them bring it in, Mendl,” Kassia said as way was made for Ozayith to drop off his load and Kasheth who was only a few minutes behind.

Finally. Something to do! Mendl followed Kassia and grabbed one side of a drum, bringing it down to Foreth. Too bad the dragon wouldn’t let the bronzes any closer, but she wasn’t even sure the queen would allow Kassia by her.

“Will she let me help her out?” Mendl asked. “She wouldn’t let me come down before, but you weren’t around and she’ll probably be more amenable with you  here.” Maybe.

M’gal stopped Kassia and gave her a quick kiss. “Word is circulating that the eggs are coming,” he said. “Everyone’s excited. Is everything alright here?” It wasn’t every day that ice was fetched for a clutching queen.

Kassia hugged M’gal tight. “She’s rushing herself and she’s not in the best of shape after being grounded so long. I think she just needs to give herself a break. The ice will give her something to chomp on and maybe make things a little more comfortable. T’rif is coming with more, or he’s supposed to be.”

She turned back to Mendl, “Let’s just offer it to her and see what she does.”

Kass led the way as they started bringing in the drums. They set the closest one within reach of her but left plenty of room between them and her and her eggs.

Foreth was already part into laying the next egg, but she reached out and greedily crunched down some of the ice, soothing her dry throat.

Well, Foreth was smart. Instinct would take over. “That works. It’s just hard to watch her, and not be able to do anything.” But watching the dragon chew on the ice, she was heartened. Part of her problem might also be dehydration, and the ice would definitely help that. Plus, whatever she didn’t eat she’d most likely drink. Yes, this was good.

“Good, it’s helping already. Not exactly what I envisioned, but she knows what she needs.”

“Let’s just settle in and watch and see if she needs anything,” Kassia said. “The boys can keep bringing ice for her.”

Foreth seemed to have a revival after the ice and after a few more moments she got up and started anew. She laid three eggs in quick succession. The first looked like black wings, the second may as well have been a stone Foreth had unearthed from the Sands, and the third was a mesmerizing tangle of greens yellows and browns.

"Hmm."  Rionnon soon came to a stop beside her, humming thoughtfully as she examined the dragons, her gaze intently sweeping over the light blue colored dragon before moving onto the muscular green.  "Come on, if we're going to be staring we should greet them properly too."  She said while she began moving forward again working her way more toward the front of the crowd.

Mendl wanted to go down by Foreth, but knew she shouldn’t. It was hard though--any other dragon that was hurt, she wouldn’t have any qualms about. Well, any other color than gold, that is. But a Clutching anything was not something anyone should just walk up to. She’d learned that when she first apprenticed to the beastherder, so many Turns ago.

But, a dragon could be asked!

“May I come down there?” she asked, fully expecting a negative answer.

((No one comes down here,)) Foreth told her, but it wasn’t as sharp of a rebuke as one might have expected. Still, she spread her wings and arms and draped herself over her eggs so far, including the golden egg. ((Nothing hurts my eggs.))

“I wouldn’t hurt your eggs. Or you,” Mendl said automatically, but she stayed put. Considering the things that had happened over the Turns, she understood Foreth’s concern. Of course, when the ice came back she’d have to either insist, or, well, Kassia would know what to do.

“All mothers want to keep their babies safe,” she said, instead. “Just let me know if I can do anything.”

((I just need rest.)) Foreth curled up around her stack of eggs, her breathing slowly returning to normal as they waited for Kassia to come back.

“Fair enough,” Mendl said, searching the Sands for any signs of blood. If she started bleeding while Clutching, that could be bad. But, she suspected it was because Foreth was nearing the end. She hoped.

“No way could a dragon have laid 50 eggs without serious damage,” she muttered. Even so, a part of her was impatiently waiting for the next egg to drop.

The Caverns was quiet again with just the two of them while Kassia was still outside presumably arranging for the arrival of ice for a few minutes. Then Foreth groaned again and got to her paws wearily as she worked herself back into position. She looked tired, but determined.

Where was Kassia? Mendl didn’t like the look of events in the Sands right now, but because Arolosian queens were so healthy she’d never been exposed to a dragon that was egg-bound before. She didn’t know the signs. Firelizards weren’t usually susceptible, and the Wherhold took care of the whers, so she’d never seen it happen.

Kassia returned a few minutes later. “They’re coming, don’t worry.”

With the flit hanging around, T'rif wasn't entirely surprised when Andreya came to find him. He smiled as he spotted her and then turned serious at her news. "We're on it. Thank you, Andreya."

T'rif slipped away to let the other ACMs know where he was going and then he was rushing to meet up with Kasheth so that they could run the errand.

Re: In Need of Ice ((Attn: T'rifoshe, Andreya))

It was the bronze who found T'rifoshe at the party first, and at spotting his 'target' and T'rif talking to him, 'Zar gave a chirp of 'yes' before the bronze looked around as if for his person. But, while keeping an eye on his 'target' just in case T'rif moved, the bronze also sent Andreya an image of T'rif surrounded by a lot of blurry figures: T'rif was at the party. Getting confirmation that he was actually there, Andreya raced into the party not far behind Trifali, looking for her bronze flit who would surely lead her to T'rif.

Even with her bronze, with his very distinctive coloring, hovering a bit over people's heads, it still took a little time for Andreya to make her way through the party enough to spot the flit. When she did, with the crowd of the party slowing her movements, she was no longer breathing as heavy by the time she *thought* she spotted T'rif.

As she got closer, and saw it *was* him, Andreya breathed a sigh of relief and when she abruptly stopped at his side, her hair a bit messy from her run, Andreya breathed out (making sure to use all proper titled even as she hurried to relay the message) "ACM T'rifoshe, I'm sorry for interrupting. the Weyrwoman says Foreth needs ice, she's clutching right now."

In Need of Ice ((Attn: T'rifoshe, Andreya))

(Snipped from 'We're off to see the Weyrwoman' thread)

At Kashara's reassurances, Andreya still looked at the other girl with concern, putting her excitement over the clutching to the wayside for worry about Kashara.

And then Kassia was outside the Caverns with them asking why they were there. When Kashara replied for them, Andreya saw the frown on the weyrwoman's face as she said we should have stayed away. But then, Kassia asked them to do some things for her, find specific people to bring ice. Nodding her head at Kassia's direction, Andreya was already reaching out to her flits, pulling 'Zar away from the green he was trying to cuddle with and Ellysetta from the soft bundle of blankets she'd been curled up in on Andreya's bed. Already directing her flits to find T'rifoshe and then let her know where he was, the pair of flits (with the image of Trifoshe she had provided them) began going between looking for her father.

As she sent the flits off looking, she pulled herself back to what Kassia was saying to hear that there was a gold egg already. Tramping down on the excitement, Andreya couldn't help herself from smiling as she offered to Kassia "I'll find T'rifoshe. And congratulations to you and Foreth on another gold!" With that, Andreya slipped off her shoes (easier to move while not wearing those tall heels) and began to run from the Cavern just slightly slower than Trifali (being barefoot now), hoping her flits would soon find T'rifoshe and provide her with a direction on where to go, but she started with heading toward the party, thinking the best chance of spotting him would be there.

“Foreth!” Mendl cried as the egg was laid. Briefly she wondered if that egg had zapped the queen, but that was impossible. “I can get some cold water for you--it sounds like there’s some swelling going on!”

She’d send both fathers to get buckets and buckets of snow for Foreth. “Kassia!” she called, not wanting to take liberties, but poised to take action.

Kassia came back out of the temporary weyr looking a little pale.

“Is everything okay?”

((It hurts,)) Foreth admitted, sounding tired. ((But nothing will stop me from laying my eggs.))

“That last one really hurt her,” Mendl said. “I was thinking that someone should go to the mountains and get some snow--I’m sure she’s swollen, and it would help bring the swelling down.” She thought a moment. “I’d like to give her numbweed, but if something went really wrong we wouldn’t know. The cold would help though.”

((Neither of the sires leave,)) Foreth said, laying down and catching her breath.

“I could send someone to find Ozayith and Kasheth,” Kassia said. “Let me go talk to one of the guards to send a note on.”
