"We need to get out of here. They know we were with a goldrider- we're suspects now. R'tal *knows* me and now these guards do too." V'rex fretted, tried to pull away. "Need to get to Muikoth- get out of here."

"I want to go home." Bl'by said under his breath once they were safely heading away. The alcohol that had added to the fun earlier was roiling around his stomach now. Finding somewhere quiet to throw it back up at some point would probably be a necessity. "If-- shells, if she dies, it's going to-- we need to not be here." He took a breath, trying to calm himself, trying to make the words come out in some kind of logical order. "Home -- High Reaches -- it'll, it'll be safe there."

Gather: Why in the world would I sell to YOU? JP (Ysolde/Sorho)

Nutmeg

IC Date Reference: Set first day of the Gather, IC date 8.28.6.1, later in the day after the Arolos Cup.

So far, the day had been looking exceptionally prosperous. Now that the races were over and more than a few people had some extra marks to burn, that was when people seemed to be inclined to look at things as frivolous as jewellery. Her father was looking exceptionally pleased as he wrote down another sale in their ledger. She had sold several of her own pieces which meant that she was several marks richer as well herself, as per her and her father’s arrangement that she would give him fifty percent. The rest went into her own pocket and she wasn’t complaining in the slightest.

“Enjoy your Gather, sir!” she called out to a gentleman who had just bought a very lovely, but simply elegant bracelet for his sister. Her father was curious at the popularity of Ysolde’s style of jewellery but saw instantly how it appealed to a much wider market. The different materials - the use of carefully woven waxed threads and not metal - kept the price down and made the prospect of fine trinkets far more accessible. That meant he could focus his traditional, metal work style to one market and she, with her style, could address another. They weren’t crossing niches and it upped the profit margin as well as allowing his daughter, and Apprentice, to develop her own skillbase.

She was busying herself with tidying up the stands, gently and deftly untangling some of the pieces and was looking through their stock box to see if she needed to put anything else out to replace what had been sold. Whilst she had the rest of the Gather to herself, whatever was sold of hers, she still saw her share of the profit. She had her eye on a Callamere bronze and if she was lucky, with a bit of help from her father, maybe she’d be able to afford one this Turn. And if not, well, she could tuck the money to one side and wait until the next Gather. Ysolde knew how to wait for what she wanted, that was for sure.

As luck would have it, it wasn’t a callamere bronze that happened upon Ysolde that Gather, but one born in the ruins of an ancient Weyr succumbed to the fury of nature.  Sanji appeared from between, literally out of nowhere, and dropped into the the stall, rolling over a few bracelets and necklaces, entangling them along his wings and neck and claws.  Bouncing up, the energetic firelizard hopped from side to side, tilting his head to and fro, trying to get a baring on his surroundings before suddenly stopping--there was a human form before him.

Slowly, Sanji raised his head.  His multi-faceted eyes immediately started swirling with color, going from blue to green to pink to blue, completely enamored of the female before him.  He hopped over to her with a happy trill.

There, the table was nice and tidy again. It was just the nature of things that things got moved around constantly but keeping on top of it was just part of the day. Ysolde had stepped back to admire her handiwork when the bronze had suddenly appeared. “Oh, oh no, no no come away… no, you need to stop…” For all that she was trying to stay incredibly calm, internally Ysolde was trying to go into absolute panic. But if that flit betweened and took the gemstones with them, that was profit down the drain. And she didn’t want that in any shape or form! As the bronze hopped towards her, Ysolde tried to project calmness and stay very, very still. “Hello there, I need you to give all of that back…” Keep it calm, keep her voice nice and soft, even rather friendly.

The bronze noticed that she seemed nervous but didn’t understand why she would be.  He opened his wings wide, as if about take off, but instead just hopped over to her, sunlight reflecting off of the gemstones that had wrapped themselves all over his body.

Not too far away a young, blonde candidate was stomping from stall to stall.  “Sanji!” he called out in annoyance, still too far from the flit for the bronze to hear him, though it was doubtful he’d obey his master.  He was going to wring the little creature's neck as soon as he caught him!  “Sanji!  Get your butt back here!”

Okay, so he seemed friendly. That was always a good start. Concentrating on keeping her voice light and friendly, Ysolde made herself a little smaller, being mindful to keep her fingers out of the way. She wasn’t going to lose a finger to a firelizard, thank you very much. “Yes, you’re very handsome but will you let me have those back?”

The new voice made her start slightly and inwardly she cursed, praying that the bronze wouldn’t vanish. Her eyes flicked up, recognising the male as another Candidate. By the sounds of it, he was the owner - but, that tone was destined to cause trouble, not help.

Sanji, even if he had heard Sorho, was much too interested in the girl in front of him.  Handsome?  Him?  Of course he was, and of course he would let her pet him if she wanted to.  The bronze chirped and hopped just a bit closer to the girl, trying to nuzzle one of her hands.  He needed attention, and he needed it now!

The sudden movement towards her hand certainly hadn’t been anticipated. But maybe she could use it. “Oh so you want a bit of attention do you? Well I can certainly do that… You’re ever so handsome aren’t you…” It was soft, mindless babble as the fingers nuzzled by the bronze moved over his tiny head whilst the other hand slowly moved towards him in order to try and pluck the jewellery and recover it safely.  That was the goal at least.

He began to croon almost as soon as her fingers made contact.  He leaned even more into it enjoying the touch, not even noticing that the jewelry was coming off of him.  Yes, he was very handsome, and she was very pretty, and pretty deserves handsome as much as handsome deserved pretty--he communicated this in a series of unintelligible chirps.

It was about this time that Sorho arrived, “Hey, have you seen… Sanji!  What are you doing?  You!”  Sorho pointed at the girl with his fire-lizard.  ‘What do you think you’re doing?  Trying to steal my flit?”

Another piece… and another… and… and… yes! She had gotten them all! The relief swept through her and Ysolde wanted to let out a whoop of jubilance as she carefully moved the pieces away from the bronze. Now that she had reclaimed her goods, she relaxed more and was content to stroke the silly thing, laughing a little at his obvious enjoyment. She didn’t have a firelizard of her own but she could see why there was so much appeal for them. They all seemed to have their own characteristics.

The voice that cut in broke the reverie and her green eyes had narrowed slightly at the accusation. Theft was something she abhorred, so to be accused of it, struck something of a nerve. So when she spoke, there was an edge to her words. “Actually, I was attempting to keep your firelizard calm enough that I could recover all of the jewellery he got himself tangled up in by rolling about on the table.” Her hand gestured to the pile she had removed. “Because otherwise, if he had disappeared with it, you would have been facing a repayment invoice of about twenty marks. And I don’t think you have that, do you?”

Sorho gave her a hard stare; twenty marks?  Who sharding had that kind of money!  “Hey, it’s not my fault that your stuff is easy to steal!  And Sanji is not a thief, he’s a…” he was about to say pervert but the blonde candidate held back, lest he get blamed for that, too.  Damned, disobedient lizard!  “Look at it all on the table without a cover or anything… flits like shiny things, you know!”  Sanji didn’t care, in fact he climbed up the girls clothing and perched himself on the girl’s shoulders, wrapping his tail around her neck.  “Fecking traitor,” Sorho mumbled to himself.

“And yet out of all the hundreds of firelizards over the Gather, only the poorly trained one is here causing trouble.” Although her tone was light, there was definitely an edge veering on slightly snide as she regarded him coolly. “Even if,” she spoke directly to the firelizard that had suddenly scampered up her shoulder and made himself comfortable and reached to tickle under his chin. “You are extremely sweet. It’s not your fault that you weren’t taught the rules.” Her eyes flickered back to Sorho, “As your firelizard it is your responsibility to ensure he is under the proper control and behaving in a suitable manner.” She sounded like an adult chastising an errant child. There was the same slightly patronising undertone to it.

“You obviously have no idea how hard it is,” Sorho replied with a low growl, annoyed by the fact that she was berating him.  Sanji was old enough to have been trained, and as much as Sorho tried the flit was as rebellious as his owner… and whenever a pretty girl was involved any little training Sanji had went between.  “Sanji, let’s go,” he told his flit but Sanji hunkered down, much preferring the girl over the boy.  He leaned against the girl’s cheek, happily crooning and chittering, enjoying every ounce of attention he received from Ysolde, which only annoyed Sorho more.  “”Pff!”

“Clearly much too hard for you. Such a shame to have wasted such a gorgeous creature on someone not even willing to train him properly.” It was a good thing her father wasn’t at the stall, else he would have chastised Ysolde for her attitude and then likely sent Sorho away with a stern word as well. The irony was, all it would have taken was an apology. But the attitude, the refusal of acknowledging his own part in not controlling the firelizard had grated against her. Manners didn’t cost anything and this boy’s creature - for all that he was probably the same age as her - could have taken a large proportion of their stock in the blink of an eye. Part of her knew that she should send the little creature away, but the fact was, she was actually enjoying the silly thing’s attention and for a moment, she saw how they were so popular in the South and she let her fingers run over the soft hide.

Sorho glared at her, and then at Sanji.  Honestly?  He felt a little hurt that Sanji would betray him like this--it was one thing for the flit to be all over girls, another to do so while that girl was talking down to Sorho.  The flit perked his head up at the surge of emotion coming from Sorho and squeaked softly at the boy, slowly loosening its tail from around her neck, but not taking off just yet.  He liked getting petted too much to leave her just now.

As for Sorho, he had no idea what to come back with at the girl, she’d hit a sensitive spot, but he’d never show it.  “Just shut up and go polish your dumb rocks.”

As the tail loosened, she saw an opportunity to get the firelizard to return to its owner, however undeserved and she jostled her shoulder slightly. “Go on, you should go back you know.” Ysolde inspected the Candidate, derision crinkling her nose slightly. “These dumb rocks that you will never be able to afford. Good thing you haven’t got anyone you’re trying to impress.” It was a low blow, normally she was always willing to barter but now she just wanted this horrible male to go away and leave her alone so she could tidy up the devastation his bronze had caused.

“At least one day I *will* impress, and not just sell dumb, expensive rocks forever,” Sorho snapped back.  He lifted his forearm, noticing Sanji about to take off.  The bronze did so and flew over to Sorho, who immediately greeted him with a loving grin and a head scratch, “You perverted little beast,” he said to him and pulled out a little dried up meat snack for the flit.  His attention returned to Ysolde a moment later, “You suck.  Bye~”

And with that he started to head off, really not caring if she had a reply to that or not.

The only thing she was sorry to see leave was the little bronze, nuisance creature that he was for demolishing her carefully laid out stall. She didn’t have a chance to respond but it didn’t stop her glaring furiously at the impertinent boy until he was lost into the crowd. Ysolde had glared several moments more for good measure before remembering she had the table to tidy. Her father would be furious if he returned and it was in such a state of disarray. That and who would buy their trinkets from a messy stall? No one, that was who. And they had marks to earn.

Bl'by licked dry lips and made the effort to find his voice. "Bl'by. Of blue Traynth. But he can't-- they won't question Traynth, will they?" That question was addressed to Andronda direct and had a note of panic in it, barely suppressed. "Traynth can't, he doesn't take questioning well."
"No, Bl'by. No one will try to question Traynth. There's no reason
to," Andronda said, before the guards could open their mouths. "You
and yours did nothing wrong, and did a great service in seeing me
safely back to my guards. Without your help, I would have been easily
knocked to the ground, likely ran over. This is all just protocol, I
swear it."

Mion and Tofin looked less than pleased, but they didn't argue with
Andronda. Since they had the names of the riders, they could do some
quiet background checks back at the Weyr, and follow up if need be.
But for the moment, Andronda's safety came first, and that meant
getting her back to the Weyr. Reluctantly, Mion nodded in agreement.

"Mion, *please*!" Andronda set herself besides the other three riders,
at least momentarily.  She held her hands up to keep the guards from
advancing on T'barand for his attitude.  She understood that they were
just doing their jobs, but at the same time, inducing panic in what
were, by and large, most likely innocent people was uncalled for.

"These good gentlemen kept me safe from being trampled, Mion.  None of
us saw what happened, only heard the screams and the call to clear the
floor."

Then she turned to T'baran, Bl'by and V'rex.  "I apologize that my
presence has caused you good gentlemen trouble.  All I wanted was a
chance to dance as just another person, and not as a gold rider.  It's
rare that we have the chance to enjoy a gather just as *ourselves* and
not as someone to be approached with some future goal or favor in
mind.  My guards were on the sidelines to keep watch - as they were
asked - while I danced.  Keeping their eyes on me is their job; the
Weyrwoman has her own guards to watch her."

Why they hadn't seen an incoming attacker was a question for them, not
the ones here.

Apparently the guards weren't able to just accept the fact that they had done them a favor, and were going to push all the wrong buttons. He knew that Bl'by wasn't going to take questioning well because of how forceful they had been with him and Traynth after the goldflight tragedy, and from the looks of it V'rex was turning into a nervous mess--he remembered the bluerider from Fort, so he wasn't surprised. Strangely, T'baran didn't feel panic. He fell into a position he'd fallen so many times before, at Fort, when his fellow blue or greenriders had accidentally run into a bronzerider or other ranker. He put himself between the guards and the blueriders, holding both hands up in a relaxed posture, "Calm down, sirs. We are all dragonriders, we would never harm another dragonrider," he began, looking from one to the other and then finally over to Andronda. "We were just trying to help. I'm T'baran. These are Bl'by and V'rex. Your boss can vouch for them, right?"

Now would be a good time for Andronda to prove she wasn't another crazy paranoid goldrider, T'baran thought to himself. Either way, he wasn't moving, he wouldn't let the guards touch the blueriders. "We didn't see anything," he added. "We heard someone scream, then we got the order to clear the dancefloor... and so we did, keeping Andronda safe." His eyes narrowed, "Where were the two of you? What are your names? What did *you* see? We can keep being suspicious of each other or accept that we both did our best in the chaos and go home."

V'rex stared at the strangers- both strong, both armed- before his gaze flicked to the woman and then back to the guards. No. No, no no no.... Not like this. Not this all over again.

He hadn't done anything wrong. There was no need for this. "Leave me alone." he managed to speak out, however, voice shaking. At least only his hands were trembling along with him. He was too scared to be polite now.

Bl'by's mouth opened and shut again, but no sound came out. This was how it started, this was where it went wrong, this was the path you headed down which ended in another gold questioning Traynth and Traynth couldn't, wouldn't take that kind of questioning again.

"We need to get out of here now!" V'rex insisted, eyes wide and in the middle of a not so fun panic attack, the presence of the guards only heightening his stress, T'baran's words only partially registering. Just because no one was dead yet didn't mean there wouldn't be. They needed to get away. Needed to get safe.

Muikoth's eyes whirled faster. ((I need to go get my rider. He's scared. He doesn't feel right.))

Andronda had been alarmed when the one rider had recognized her;
someone had stabbed one Weyrwoman, who was to say there weren't riders
involved, and without her knots and everyone panicking, was he
*looking* for her specifically?  She couldn't manage to squeak out a
response, nor pull herself away from Bl'by's vice-like grip to slip
away.  Instead she was pulled along with the other two, towards the
edges of the crowd.  The mention that there was no keening of the
dragons did help calm some of Andronda's fear.  No keening meant
Kassia was alive, if not well.  But that didn't mean safe, by any
means.  Especially if gold riders were being targeted.

The more the crowd thinned out, the easier it was to scan the edges of
the dance square, and just as they spotted her, Andronda spotted her
guards as well.  A pair of large men, both tall and strongly built,
came striding over quickly to intercept the group of riders.

"Lady Andronda, are you hurt?" asked Mion.

"Sir, please unhand Gold rider Andronda," Tofin said, looking at Bl'by
sternly.  Not threateningly, because he didn't yet see a threat, but
there was an authoritative tone to his voice that would brook no
argument from anyone.

Bl'by hadn't been listening, hadn't really absorbed what T'baran had said before, was not in any way ready for a pair of guards to approach them. It was fortunate that his automatic action if approached by guards, well-trained by Fort, was to raise both hands into view releasing both Andronda and V'rex. He'd already been verging on panic, now he just stared at Andronda in utter shock because really he'd had nightmares that went this way.

It helped. It helped because T'baran sounded calm and had a clear idea what to do at a point where Bl'by was caught between getting away and pushing back through to find Cuylar. Just..get out, work out what was happening.. and then maybe run. He nodded and swallowed back on the panic, starting to push Andie and V'rex forward again until they were out of the worst of the crowd, keeping a sharp eye to make sure T'baran didn't somehow vanish on the way.
