He rubbed the back of his neck, glancing toward the animals in the pen beside him as he considered his response. "Probably a team. It depends on what I can get for the marks I have, though - I'll take young if it means they shave a bit off the price, but I'd prefer it if they could work right away. I don't know how much time my folks have to break a pair of draybeast themselves." Then, after a moment's thought, he reconsidered: "A breeding pair could be good for them. They won't be plowing fields forever, so something to make a bit of barter on the side, you know, when they're not pulling up stumps and stones."

"Well, first off, what are you looking for?  A single draybeast, or a team?  Youngsters to train but will be a few Turns before they're really useful, or grown ones?"  Shalia knew that these would all make a difference, especially in the price.

"Great!  Let's get going.  Gleam, sorry, but you'll have to stay here," Mathern apologized to the wher.  She could sometimes be brought along with advance notice, but being a gold it was generally preferred that she not visit the Whercrafthall, and especially not when unscheduled.

((Hmph.  Gleam stay, but want meet new whers,)) she acquiesced, if a bit grumpily, and went back to her nest.  ((Dim glow,)) she added, which Mathern chose to interpret as a request rather than an insult.

"Yes, I promise to set up a time for you to visit and meet them while we're there," she soothed, closing the lid on the glow basket even more so that the two humans could just barely see to make their way to the door.  Fortunately, she kept the area between the glows and the door clear for precisely this reason, and made her way to the door with the surety of long familiarity with the area; even if Kianna hadn't wanted to risk it, there was plenty of light coming in from the hallway once opened to make it easy.

Well he'd done good in the races, and had a pretty decent nest egg besides. The parents were on the larger side, and had really good lines, and Trometh was in favor. After a moment's thought he decided to look them over a bit more carefully, and decided on the red egg. There really was something about it.

"Alright, I'd like this red egg here. There's something about the color that my dragon and I both like." D'vik reached into his belt pouch and counted out the four marks, extending his hand to the man behind the stall.

A Helping Hand (ATTN: Kassia, Trifali)

Jessica Freise

Trifali was growing used to her new life. Compared to her old one, it was paradise. This morning found her in the dining cavern, weaving her way through tables. She nearly joined Rennitz, but spied the Weyrwoman, looking far less well than usual, and veered in her direction.

"You don't look so good," she commented boldly. "Can I do anything to help?"

GATHER: Shopping is Good for the Soul (Attn: Dytha, Mendl)

Laurie

Mendl had been having nightmares. Not screaming ones, but ones that woke her up with a jerk, or that if she did wake up, she couldn't get back to sleep. All these dreams featured dead embryos in eggs coming to life and chasing her calling, "Save me! No, save ME!"

She knew that what had happened needed to be done. The look of relief on various faces when they determined it was the quake that killed the eggs and not the parentage was proof-positive of that.  And so what if one was still alive? She still was.

It still bothered her though.

But all that was the past. Over and done with. Now there was a Gather in town, and she had a good friend who would help her spend the mark she got from Master Larsin. Since said good friend also received the same amount from him, they could go on a fun shopping spree.

So, she walked up to Dytha's weyr to see if she and Ponth wanted to go shopping. And maybe she would talk to Dytha about her nightmares...

How to Mistreat a Dragon (Attn: Foreth, Kassia, Mendl)

Laurie

Another apprentice came flying into the Dragon Infirmary in tears and threw down their supplies. "She's insufferable. I'm not going back in there!"

Mendle looked at the supplies and sighed. Yet another promising dragonhealer wannabe who just couldn't handle a dragon with a forceful personality. She picked them up and headed out. Obviously no one else was going to do it, so she would go and check on Foreth's broken leg.

Why couldn't people understand how to handle her? Foreth was fine, as long as you treated her with the respect she thought she deserved. If you exuded an air of belief in said respect, even better.

She entered the Hatching grounds and started talking right away. "Foreth," she called in a sing-song voice, "I know you missed me but you didn't have to make Nallya cry. You know you can always call me if you want me to attend you."

It wasn't until she got closer that she thought she heard shouting. Was Kassia in a fight with someone?

Some are just like whiskers in that they carry the vibrations to their face, but the thicker ones are appendages unto themselves. So I'm not sure a hood will work, unless it's slender and we use straps to fasten it. I wouldn't want to hurt them, you know?"

Even as she spoke, her mind was racing. "Maybe instead of a full-on hood, we have something like a screen?"
Mathern frowned thoughtfully, trying to picture this; the use of the word 'whiskers' suggested to her that they were concentrated on their muzzles.  "Well, I wasn't talking about a full hood.  The ones Ma made left their muzzles clear, just covered their eyes and heads, and strapped under the neck."  She demonstrated by tracing the outline on Gleam.  "Of course I wouldn't want to hurt them either, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by a screen."  She gave a small chuckle.  "Actually, I think first thing is I need to actually meet these tunnelwhers so I can see what we're working with.  You up for a field trip to the Hall?"

Re: GATHER: Where's a Wher? Here's Five! (WHERSTALL)

Ren

After the event with the poor blue watchwher, N'met had found his heart hurting for the little beasties in a newfound empathy. He talked it over with Abartth (and Sojourner, once he woke from a nap) and found the browns had interesting points. N'met needed to get out more- a wher needed exercise. N'met felt bad since he couldn't wash Abartth all on his own anymore, a wher was much smaller and easier to care for. N'met could use someone nearby in case anything happened, the wher could be there. Just not in the Dragonhealing offices. No, Sojourner would have to do there, but a wher could do anywhere else.

Convinced, N'met looked about the Gather for a place to buy whers. Not knowing of Callamere, he didn't head immediately there but instead went to aa wagon he saw advertising eggs at a very decent price.

"Hello there, brownrider!" Viraletor greeted N'met upon approach. N'met smiled back and nodded.

"Good Gather, trader. Has the day been treating you well?" N'met replied kindly.

"Smell of those bubblies is killing me, but yes!" Viraletor laughed. "Thinking of having one of my whers guard the stock and nipping over for a bit to get some. But what brings you to my humble wagon? Were you thinking of buying a wher egg today?"

"Aye, I was," N'met agreed. "My Abartth and I have been talking about it after we helped out a watchwher who was being tormented the other day."

Shock colored the trader's face that N'met felt was actually real. "At a Weyr?! I thought people knew better here?"

"Oh they do," N'met hurriedly clarified, "But children sometimes can be cruel. And it was children, throwing in glows to hurt the creature. We got a healer there to take care of the poor blue and he's fine now. But since then I've had this bizarre empathy for whers and my dragon suggested getting one. I see you have some eggs here yet, can you tell me anything about them?"

"Well I can tell you their parents are my very own green and brown. There's one egg that's bigger than the others so I reckon that's a brown, too. Can't be a bronze, you know, greens don't lay those."

"I didn't know that, but it makes sense," N'met nodded. "Hm, A brown... Ha! My dragon and firelizard are brown, may as well go with that. What can you tell me about brown whers?"

"Excellent choice!" Viraletor grinned back at N'met. "Bit biased myself. Browns are loyal fellows, though they'll stop and ask you if an order you give them goes against what they know as the rules. They're patient and easy to train but they do need stimulation. Walks are great as are big bits of wood to chew. Driftwood, like. They'll get about.... almost four feet tall and pretty heavy, though with your dragon you shouldn't have a problem. What do you think?"

N'met's eyes unfocused a minute as he spoke with Abartth, relaying what he'd learned. It took a few minutes until the man blinked and smiled, gaze settling on Viraletor. "I'll take the big egg, then. Here's hoping it's a brown."

"Wonderful, sir! That'll be four marks, then, brownrider." N'met passed over the bits and, after counting them to be sure, he slid the pot to N'met. "Keep it warm and it'll hatch within a sevenday. If it's a dud, have your dragon talk to me and I'll refund you, no problem. When it hatches, give it meat and love and you're set for life."

"I appreciate the policy and information," N'met said, hefting the pot. "Thank you, sir, and have a Good Gather."

Re: Gather: Callamere Whers Stall Atten: F'liau/Revai

Ren

F'liau had no idea what had Scarleoth so interested in whers, but he absolutely was. He had been insisting on his rider getting one to the point that F'liau had sat down square in front of the blue's nose and had a heart-to-hearts talk with him about exactly why the dragon wanted a wher. Scarleoth pointed out that all important riders had one for protection, but since no one was as likely to attack F'liau, his would certainly be more along the lines of a status symbol pet. When Scarleoth said "status sybmol", F'liau immediately thought of Callamere and then had to explain that to the blue. Yes, it must be a Callamere, but nothing higher than his hide color. So a green then.

Not opposed to the idea but instead rather interested, F"liau found himself entering Callamere's wherstall and waiting for his turn to speak with Revai.

(Gather) Come One! Come All! Atmadja has it all!

Jerzy Tobin

Atmadja of GreenLeaf Trading Caravan had set her stall up in the same
spot she had set it up in for the many turns that she had been coming
to the Arolos Midsummer gathers. The tent that her tables were set up
under was brightly colored, and festooned with garlands of flowers in
a myriad of shapes and colors. Behind ithe tent stood her wagon, its
paint just as bright, having been touched up for the gather. Her two
Callamere whers, bronze Bronny and blue Noha were resting underneath
the wagon, watching the people stoll by, relaxed, but ready to come to
Atmadja's defence if it was needed. Her brown flit, Zydeko, was
perched on top of the wagon's roof, getting as much of the sun's
warmth as he could.

.Inside the tent were a number of tables were set up. Like always,
there were all manner of goods, all arranged by what type of goods
there were. On one side there were hides, expertly tanned and dyed
in all manners of colors, ready to be used for new shoes, boots, or
even leathers for harnesses for dragons, if any riders cared to buy
some. Next to the leathers there were bolts of cotton and linen
fabric, both dyed and undyed, ready to be made into shirts and
trousers and the like. There were also skeins of yarn and ribbons, as
well as some prettily woven
shawls. There were also hanks of thread for sewing and embroidery, in
different weights for different tasks.

On another table there were cakes of dye. The cakes were arranged by
color, with everything from green and blue to orange and scarlet. Dye
that was guaranteed to give firm colors that wouldn't fade for years -
under normal use, of course - or to change into less desirable
colors. There were a few cups of the dye set up with bits of scrap
fabric to demonstrate with as well, should any of the buyers ask.

There was some crockery and glaze-work, plates and cups in sets, some
sets of plain cutlery and a few pots and pans of various sizes.

Dangling from a wire connected to the two front poles that were
holding the front of the stall up were different types of necklaces
and bracelets, arranged from what there were made out of. There were
some that were made of brightly colored woven thread, others of wooden
beads that had been carefully painted, ones with beads made of carved
bone, and others made from shells.

"Come one, come all! Atmadja has it all! Step right up and see the
treasures I have for all you gather goers, all at a fair price! Step
right up, don't be shy!"

OOC: Come on, all you folks. Atmadja has pleanty of stuff for you to
gander at, and this trader loves a good bargain. Please put your

It was nice to be out of the winter cold of the North, and living as he did near a desert, his summer clothes were thankfully appropriate for an Arolos summer. Glossith certainly appreciated the opportunity for a warmer sun.

Re: Have Something to Tell You atten: Ko'ssen/Kassia

When the guard said the Weyrwoman was waiting, Ko'ssen gave him a respectful nod and headed inside.

Heading up to where Kassia was sitting, Brogan of course next to her, at her gesture and words Ko'ssen dipped his head low in respect before taking the seat she'd offered. As he settled himself, Ko'ssen greeted her saying "Good evening, Weyrwoman Kassia. I hope both you and Foreth have enjoyed the day. How may I be of service?"

There was just a hint of surprise in his voice because they'd just spoken a couple days ago and hadn't planned to meet for another sevenday to go over ideas. But he didn't at all think that she'd request a meeting if it wasn't quite important, knowing he'd still be swamped with getting things sorted out.
