"Aye, sometimes my dragon's a bit of...an interfering sort. Then Q'yon here and I got to talking, and well. I once knew your mother Yovalle. Rather well in fact. But she never told me...well about you." J'hen flushed a little and looked down at his grandson, whom he was very proud of and waited to see how that revelation would be taken.

What have I done? (Alyx/Insera)

Alyx

The new schedule was wearing on Alyx a bit. Ever since the quake, and impressing Cremmie she’d been trying to get used to being up at night rather than during the day. It wasn’t easy though. Once all the paperwork had been settled, she’d found herself on the way to the wherhall to get proper training for her new brown. Tonight she was supposed to meet with Insera, who at least could help her get settled and give her more of an idea what to expect from here on out.

Now that she was unpacked, and things put away properly, she slid Cremmie’s collar on with the leash and headed to Insera’s office, Cremmie in tow. He was wary of the new place, and everytime he saw someone he didn’t know, he put himself between them and Alyx. Guarding her. Even though he was still small. Alyx knew it wouldn’t last long however and wanted to make sure that he was well trained before he could become too dangerous.

She stopped outside Insera’s door and pushed her black curls back into some semblance of neatness before knocking on the door.

“Come in,” Insera called. She was behind her desk with her head down, her golden curls covering the side of her face torn up by the whelp turns ago.

Laying in the bed by the desk was the red-bronze Sorrel who rumbled, alert but relaxed.

Alyx pulled the door open, silently telling the little brown whelp by her side {Behave now.}

Cremmie by her side, merely butted his head against her leg and followed close, looking at everything around him with intelligent curiosity. Once inside he glanced at Insera for a moment, then looked over at Sorrel. He took a step towards the other wher, cautious, but mostly friendly. [I Crem, this my ‘Lyx]

“Ah, you must be Alyx,” Insera said, “I’ve been expecting you. Come on in. Have your wher sit next to you.”

Sorrel, well trained, gave one quick curious look at the new wher, but otherwise ignored him.

“Uh yes, I am. I kind of figured you’d be expecting me. Since, well I wasn’t expecting Cremmie at all.” She sat in one of the chairs by the desk. Cremmie, kept his eyes on the other wher, but sat next to Alyx’s chair without a fuss. After another minute of being ignored he turned and laid his head on her foot with a sigh.

Insera watched the interaction of handler and wher as they talked and nodded with approval. It was a good start. She liked what she saw so far.

“We’ll make sure that you get everything in line for your handsome little surprise here. Looks like you might be on the right track already. What have you done with him so far?”

“Oh well..not much. He hatched during that quake. I was on an errand delivering medicine to one of our more elderly riders, and I always bring him lunch when I take his medicines up. Then the quake happened and I was, well caved in. Cremmie hatched while I was stuck, and he was just...so hungry. So I fed him our lunches, and he’s been glued to my side since.” Alyx stopped a minute, thinking things over, that had been a very long day.

“He helped me dig out when my rescuers came. I started to push on a rock and he pushed me away from it and showed me where it was safer to dig. Not sure really how he knew but he did. He’s very protective of me, puts himself between me and people he doesn’t know. He hasn’t tried to bite anyone. Not even my flits. He even accepts Asheran. Seems to think of him as uh..’my bronze’.” At that she flushed a little.

Cremmie, after a moment stretched out, he’d been growing fast. So he interrupted Alyx, [‘Lyx I itch.] Without even thinking about it Alyx reached down and scratched his back where the itch spot was.

“Okay, tell me what you could have done differently just now,” Insera said, nodding at the two of them. “With the scratching.”

Alyx blinked and looked down at the little wher sprawled across the floor at her feet. “I suppose I could have made him wait, or asked where he itched, but, I..just knew where it was itchy.” Cremmie turned his head to look up from one person, to the other then just laid his head back down, unworried.

“Right, you’re going to know what he needs,” Insera said. “And if you’re not careful, he might start taking advantage of that. You want to establish now that all good things good come from you and they come because they say they do. Not because they want them. So you ask him to do something for the scratch. A sit, a ‘please’. Make him wait a moment. Something to enforce that you’re in charge. I don’t know your wher. Some whers need this more than others, but all need it to some extent and when they’re young is when you need to practice it the most.”

“I...see. That’s why I wanted to come here. I never intended on having a wher, but now I do, and I want to make sure he’s trained the absolute best he can be.”

[Crem good boy. Crem listen, ‘Lyx.] The little brown stretched again, stubby little wings flaring open before folding with a rustle as he relaxed again.

“And that’s what we’re here for,” Insera said with a smile. “Yes, Crem is a good boy. Good boy, Crem. We’ll keep making sure Crem’s a good boy with regular classes. Since you’re staying here, you can live in the apprentice quarters and you’ll go to all of the training classes we have, as well you’ll get private lessons since I know you’re on a schedule. We’ll try to get you out of here as fast as possible. If you’re here to work hard, hopefully this won’t take long.”

“That sounds like it will work good. I want to make sure he’s well socialized, and that he can be left alone without everything being destroyed while I am at work. Though...with him I’m not entirely sure where I am going back to. He’s caused quite a bit of trouble for me. Though, I wouldn’t change it for anything.” She smiled fondly down at the brown wher, whom knew he was being talked about.

[Crem good. Make ‘Lyx life better. More fren. Less work. More happy.] Like some of her friends and teachers, Cremmie thought she had worked too much in the past. He wasn’t even wrong.

“I’ve been...thinking about what to do now. I..don’t know what all is involved in whercraft. I was thinking though, maybe with search and rescue type things, you could use some medics along?”  Since Cremmie’d come into her life she wasn’t sure that just being a straight healer was going to work anymore.

“We could certainly talk about that idea once he’s trained up,” Insera said. “What are you struggling with the most so far? You said he gets protective?”

“He does. He hasn’t growled or tried to bite. But he puts himself between me and others. Especially if I don’t know them.” Alyx said, looking back at Insera.

[Crem Protect.] Was all the wher had to say about it.

“That’s...going to be inconvenient for a wher,” Insera said. “Even guard whers aren’t trained that way for a reason. We’re definitely going to have to redirect that. Ideally we would have wanted him closer to...pet is not the word I like to use, but a non-working wher, but it seems he got more of a working wher mentality, so we’ll definitely have to work on it from that angle.”

Alyx wasn’t entirely sure what to say about that, but she did look down at Cremmie, laying across her feet, happy with his world for the moment. He was well fed, well bathed and oiled. It was obvious he was being well cared for.

“How do we work on that? He wants to be with me, well pretty much all the time right now, and I know that’s important while the bond sets. I...think maybe once his basic training is done I would like to do something where we can work together.”

“We’re going to work on him getting to know that other people aren’t always a threat, for one,” Insera said. “We’re also going to bolster his trust in you so that he knows when there’s a difference between when when he can just watch and when you really want him to be on guard and protect. We’re not going to Train him on real protection work. I don’t think he needs it and I think that will make things worse. But we will teach him to defer to you to know when something is a threat or not and when to back down when everything is okay again. That way he’s not always getting in the way. Does that make sense?”

“It does. I’m good with that. I don’t want him attacking someone just because they annoy me.” She was only human after all. Sometimes other people were annoying, especially coming to the infirmary. But was she going to continue that? Would Cremsden even take her back? Well now wasn’t the time to be worrying about it.

“I..don’t think he will be too hard to work with. Compared to the other’s I’ve seen...his temprement is much, uhm, milder?” She wasn’t sure that was quite the right word but she didn’t have a better one at the moment.

“That bodes well for you,” Insera said. “They all have their quirks. We’ll work with him and see what we can come up with. For now, let me show you to the apprentice quarters and get you checked in.”

She rose to her feet and came around slowly, stopping a distance from Alyx to see what the whelp would do.

Cremmie raised his head as Insera got up and rolled onto his belly so that his feet were beneath him. Ready to move if needed but making no signs of doing so. Alyx wasn’t worried so he was merely alert and watching.

With Cremmie now off of her feet, Alyx stood up, she held the leash firmly, but not tight and didn’t tug at him to get him to rise. After a moment of consideration, Cremmie got to his feet and stood by Alyx’s side. Head pressed against her knee.

Insera nodded to herself and then stepped closer as if to approach, holding her hand out to Alyx.

Alyx reached out to shake hands, keeping half an eye on Cremmie. Cremmie knowing he was being watched, for...something, kept still and watched as the two shook hands. His eyes shifted to the other wher for a moment, then back to Alyx, after a moment he slowly sat by her side.

“Good boy, Cremmie. Good, wher.” Insera reached into her pouch she always wore of treats and tossed him a piece of cured meat.  The she stepped back. “Let’s get you settled.”

Cremmie sniffed at the meat a second, then ate it and decided that Insera was a good person. [Crem good. Crem listen.]

Alyx couldn’t help a small chuckle at the way he inspected the treat then gobbled it on down. She’d taken to keeping a belt pouch full of distractions herself.

“Follow me.” Insera led the way out and then down a path towards the apprentice quarters which were empty for the moment. She took them to a cot in the corner that was unusued.

“This is yours,” she said. “The apprentices should be back soon and they can show you around. You want to introduce everyone Cremmie meets to him slowly tell them that it’s okay. Make him sit next to you and then give him a reward. Discourage him from getting in between you and others. We’ll work on it starting tomorrow, but for today just try to get him used to people. Also, watch to make sure he’s not biting anyone.”

Alyx followed along, Cremmie at her side, looking around curiously. Once they were at the cot, she noticed that her bag of things had beaten her here and was sitting on the bed, alongside her two flits. Ardy was sitting on the headboard. Quiet and calm, Lair was laying on the pillow but popped his head up and creeled hungrily when people showed up.

Cremmie ignored the two flits, in favor of looking around the area and finally settling himself by the cot, again resting his chin on top of Alyx’s foot.

“I think I can manage that. I’ve been sure to keep him well fed so he doesn’t get hungry and snap. But he’s not been bad so far about it. Just the guarding.” Alyx said, currently ignoring the hungry sounding blue.

“We’ll work on it,” Insera promised. “You’re doing the right thing to come here. We’ll get you trained up and then take advantage of those skills later. I have to get back to work, but the apprentices should be along soon. Anything else I can do for you before I go?”

“No, thank you, I think I am alright. I’m not quite...used to his schedule yet, so I may lay down for a bit. He’s never left my side while I sleep so I imagine that will stay the same here.” Alyx said as she freed her foot and sat down on the cot, shoving her bag of belongings onto the floor, which was promptly claimed as a pillow by Cremmie.

“Feel free. Have a good evening, Alyx,” Insera said.

Even send pretty girls up with my medicine and a nice lunch so I don't get lonely. Of course, having family around will help a lot. I look foward to seeing what you accomplish young man."

"Well," Fali breathed, astonished at the audience she'd accidentally garnered. Shoving her chest closed, she sat on it and studied the firelizards; gold, bronze, brown, blue, green.

"I think I have some jerky on me," she murmured, offering the Queen a piece.

Checking the Distance (attn: Borriga, Nevena)

Mya L. R.

There were normally Guards patrolling...well...most place in the Weyr, following pathes set to ensure the best protection for Weyrresidents.  Admittedly they didn't always walk in the exact same footsteps as the ones before them.  Nevena did her best sticking to them though.  She had a smile on her face, born from not having seen any potential problems in a while.  It was always nice having a quiet walk where people could see that there was someone who'd protect them nearby.

She wasn't that far from the Candidate Barracks when she caught sight of someone leaning against the Weyrwall.  His gaze was directed toward the sky, seeming like he was staring off into the distance.  Her own brown eyes followed his gaze, seeing dragons, sky, and more sky...nothing that'd indicate he was looking at anything in particular.

Still it wouldn't do to potentially overlook anything.  She adjusted her course wandering over somewhat closer to where he was leaning.  "You look like you've got a lot on your mind?"

Trifali gulped, hard. For a moment, she appeared torn between a bow and a rough curtsy, but settled for sticking out her hand as she entered the office.

"Good to meet you, Weyrwoman. I like Fali for short," she said with a quick flash of a grin before glancing at T'rif. "I thought I'd stop by and spend some time with you."

Re: [Hatching Feast] I'm So Proud! (K'el, Vofali)

K'el could not have been more pleased by her praise, though he never was quite certain how to respond. It meant a great deal to him, her use of his new title, and it inspired the unbelievably broad smile that stretched across his blocky face. In his mind, there wasn't a snowball's chance on the Red Star that he would ever get used to that! To hear her prediction about where his future might lead made his eyebrows shoot toward the ceiling, a possibility he had clearly not yet even considered if the look on his face was any indication.

There was perhaps a moment of hesitation where K'el was fearful whether Alberith would object, but the little bronze was as deeply asleep as he could be, and that solidified K'el's choice. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Vofali, scooping the smaller woman up into a tight hug. If she didn't object, the new bronzerider held her there for several long seconds, his eyes squeezed shut against the tears that threatened to spill in turn.

"Thanks," was all he managed, his bass quiet and shaky.

K'el tilted his head at the implication behind Lerian's words, and he wondered what sort of food scarcity the boy had experienced. The times when K'el had been forced to go hungry were few and far between. He accepted the cloth with a goofy grin, wiping crumbs and fruit preserves from his face abashedly. Another laugh left him, tired and breathy, but delighted nonetheless.

Re: Because now it's getting on my thoughts. (Ysolde/Tolfast)

Tolfast smiled fondly to watch her interact with the kitten; it warmed his heart to meet young people who felt for beasts as he did. A wince crossed his features to hear the baby's cry, but it was fleeting, a quiet laugh following Ysolde's observation. "Aye, I imagine she'll be quite the loud talker as she gets bigger," he nodded, but didn't envy the thought of being awakened by hungry screeches in the night.

Hearing her speak of the plans she had made in order to best accommodate the feline's needs, Tolfast's smile only broadened into a wide grin. He liked this girl. "These are good ideas," his head dipped in a nod. "The more time you spend with her, the more she'll learn to trust you and won't be afraid to explore. It's smart to get her accustomed to the basics early on; there are some hand signals I can teach you to use with her, but you may have to resort to a good, holdfashioned foot-stomp to get her attention from time to time."

Lifting a hand to wave a passing apprentice over, he continued. "You've a good head on your shoulders, Ysolde. I can tell you've put a lot of effort into how you'll take care of her and she's lucky to have you. --Ah, yes. Please go to the storeroom and retrieve one of the spare harnesses off the wall - we'll need a small one." The boy took off at a run with his new orders, and Tolfast turned back to the redhead before him.

"You'll want to keep her on-leash and in a harness at all times when she's not safely in your future weyr," he shared an encouraging smile, "or in the Kennels. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how much danger a deaf kitten can get into in a Weyr by herself. I'll help you fit her for this first one, and show you how to know when she's ready to size up."

As the kitten was handed to her, Ysolde kissed the top of Lovely's head. "That would explain why she's so loud. She can't hear herself so she shouts louder." As if on cue, the kitten let a loud "MEOW" as she fidgeted herself into a comfortable position. What Tolfast had had to say didn't distress Ysolde, she had started to have similar suspicions - her biggest concern was whether the kitten could survive and have good quality of life. "It's why I'm leaving her in the kennels so much but I'm planning to ask the Candidatemaster if I can move into one of the rooms on the second floor and then put up shelves and things for her to climb on. I've already decided that when I have my own weyr she's going to have everything she needs to play and be safe but also interested and happy."

It was blatantly obvious that Ysolde adored the little creature in her hands and her serious expression suggested she had already been putting a lot of thought into how to accommodate the kitten into her life. "I've been getting her used to brushing and letting me look at her - so checking her feet, eyes, ears, that sort of thing."

She's a good weight for her age, you've been feeding her appropriately and by her sweetness, you've obviously done a good job socializing her." His expression lightened as he began to praise Ysolde, knowing that some might be devastated by what he had to say next. "My fear is that your darling may be a bit deaf."

He offered the feline back to her owner, suspecting both would be comforted by one another. "Now, I don't want you to worry and I don't want to spook the other beasts, but there's only one real way to test *how* deaf and that's by making noise. You won't want to do that until you have her fitted for a harness, in case she tries to run. If she can hear, you may scare her, but it won't hurt."

Tolfast's eyes were soft for the helpless creature, protector instincts always on overdrive for vulnerable things. "She has what we call the 'lethal white' coat because of the troubles that tend to accompany her color. Animals are often blind or deaf, or both, if they survive long after birth - which isn't always a guarantee. However, given that she appears to be thriving, I would say she's one of the lucky ones."

He paused, glancing down at the notes scribbled on the hide he carried, Tolfast was quick to add. "You know, I might have a harness just her size in the storeroom."

She watched him critically, watching for the slightest suggestion of cruelty in his grip. But there was none. "I think it was within a sevenday or so of finding her. At first I wasn't sure if her ears had developed properly yet which is why I waited until now rather than come rushing because otherwise, she was eating, playing, putting on weight and so on."

Lovely had started purring the moment Tolfast took her, a deep and rumbling noise that seemed to make her vibrate. Her head followed the man's movement but was quickly distracted by a ficker of light on the wall, a reflection from the water troughs put down for the canines, oblivious to the snapping fingers behind her

Tolfast could always tell when someone genuinely cared about their animals, and it instantly endeared the girl to him. His smile remained in place to listen to her talk, waving her apology aside with a quick hand. "Never mind that, I'm sure you candidates have plenty to keep you busy." He didn't need first-hand experience to imagine their hectic schedules.

When Ysolde began to speak worriedly, he offered her another of his smiles meant to be reassuring. "You made the right choice," he spoke soothingly, bending to take the feline from her hands with a gentle touch. "I always say, it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to our beasts. We are responsible for them, so we ought to do our best. Hello, little one." Tolfast turned the kitten this way and that for a quick inspection with his eyes before peering into each of her small ears.

"When did you first notice her not reacting to you? Has she responded before now?" He had seen cases like this in the past, but wanted to be sure he had all the information. Close to the kitten's ears, but not within her line of sight, Tolfast snapped his fingers behind the kitten's head in the hopes of provoking feedback.

The smile was reassuring and her own joined him, albeit there were smudges of worry in her face as she took the hand and shook it in hearty greeting. "Candidate Ysolde, sir. Apologies if I've not said hello before. I keep Lovely here because she's so small and most of the time I'm running in and out before I have to rush back to classes."

Holding up the kitten for the man to see, Ysolde had beamed at his compliment of the creature. "Aren't they just the most amazing blue? And her eyes are so dark around the edges! But..." she faltered away slightly, looking uncomfortable. "... I'm sure it's just me being an overly fussy worrier because she's my first feline. But it seems like she's not always that... responsive."

Tolfast spent as much time around the animals as possible, both because he preferred to work hands-on and because he felt most at ease around the beasts. Clean-up had mostly been completed by this point around the kennels, but there was still evidence of the damage in small, new cracks that stretched across the foundation.

At the ring of a new voice in his ears, the beastmaster looked up from the messily scrawled hidework in his grasp. "...Hm, felines?" Tolfast spied the kitten she carried and a small smile emphasized the light wrinkles on his cheeks. "Well, isn't she darling. What eyes! Yes, I know some about them. Is there something in particular you need help with?"

As if realizing belatedly that he had forgotten to offer his name, he stretched an open hand out to the young candidate. "Master Tolfast, pleasure to meet you."

OoC: Fuzzied to a couple of days after the earthquake.

IC: After repairing as much as she could of the broken shelf that had come down in the quake and assisting in "The Great Barracks Clean Up" that had followed, Ysolde had realised she was paying more and more attention to Lovely's behaviour.

The feline had been on her cot just a few days prior - and before the earthquake - when Ysolde had accidentally dropped a block of wood she was using and it had clattered noisily to the ground with a bang that had even meant she jumped. And Lovely had just... well.. sat there. She hadn't moved until Ysolde had and had peered at the Candidate quizzically with her gorgeous blue eyes.

After speaking to one of the kennelhands, they had told her that there was a new Master who might help and to keep an eye out for him at the kennels. So Ysolde had done just that. The same kennelhand helpfully pointed the man out and Ysolde had trotted towards the dark haired man.

"Excuse me, sir? Are you any good with felines?"

"Good." Insera nods. "Because when you're a part of whercraft you don't get to get new whers unless it's a part of the program. I hope you remember that. As for now, you are suspended for a sevenday without pay and a note is going in your file. I hope you will take the time to reflect on how a person of your rank should act in the future and that you will make sure that your bonds with your current whers is strong. Do you understand?"

"I do, Master," Diagir nodded. "Whers are a commitment like dragons."

Insera relaxed a little, though she had no wonder that Northern whers were so illy behaved if they were trained like that. "You understand that we don't take training and getting whers so lightly here, correct? Whers are for life here. When you get one, it is a privilege and lifelong and not to be taken lightly."
