Re: Jewels In Their Setting (ATTN: Diagir)

To say that Diagir was shocked was beyond. This small timid girl had sad that whers weren't ugly! A wide smile cracked and spread over his face and he gave a laugh. "You don't, eh? Well! You're absolutely in a minority among people, especially young ones like yourself. Most people, like you said, call these creatures ugly and monsters. But while they're not as smooth and graceful as dragons or firelizards, they're downright critical."

Reaching out a hand to his queen, Diagir ran his palm over her muzzle almost tenderly. "It's why I helped star the Whercraft, honestly."

Ziya purred under Diagir's attention and was inclined to give the girl more positive consideration. Vainglory came up to directly sniff the child with a little wag of her tail and genuine curiosity, while Diagirsk kept his distance.

"No, I haven't. I typically only Stand when there's a gold egg. If you can guess, there's not many of those. I've seen only three since coming here- Zivath, Valkath, and Razelth. I stood for their hatchings, but they wouldn't have me." Rennitz sighed softly but lifted her chin. "But I won't give up. I'll keep standing until I get too old. Although.... if I get old enough that I won't be able to stand, then I'll open my heart to a blue or green. Nothing against them, of course, but when you grow up in an isolated hold and hear the stories..."

"I've heard," she started timidly, watching as the whers approached, "that many think them ugly. But I don't."

had she dared? She had. She had voiced her own opinion, a thing that she'd only done once or twice in her lifetime and that had always resulted in a swift and heavy retribution from her father. She gazed on each wher, seeing the differences, the confirmation, the beauty.

Ziya snorted through the water in happy agreement and stood to her full height. Looking over her shoulder, Ziya trilled at the brown and green behind her before proceeding towards Diagir and Yiyu. {Who girl?} Ziya asked Diagir.

"This is Yiyu, my dear. Yiyu, this is Ziya, my Callamere gold queen wher. Coming up now are my first wher, Northern brown Diagirsk, and Ziya's daughter, green Vainglory."

Diagirsk grunted as he emerged from the water, his massive size a testament to his origin. Vainglory, meanwhile, was quite tiny next to the brown, which showed off her Callamere genes.

"You...haven't Impressed yet?"

The question was so stupid, so obvious, that Yiyu blushed furiously and glanced down and away. Her heart turned over at the thought of not Impressing, then lifted a little. Obviously she could stay, could try again. Not that they hadn't told her that. But she was so secretly hopeful it hurt inside.

She let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Her glance found the approaching gold and her mixed fear and awe showed plainly on her face, though hope blazed in her dark brown eyes.

"Could I?" she asked, voice a little louder, but still soft.

Hearing her human talking to someone, Ziya looked over to see Diagir talking to a young girl. Re: (Razelth's Clutch) The Ground Rules (Attn: Any Candidates)

A Clutch meant there would be Candidates more eager than some of the others.  Mainly the younger ones, or those who'd not stood before, Qioyon qualified for both and he couldn't keep from bouncing in his seat, rather excited over the situation.  There were several people asking question, and he kept swinging his head around looking in their direction, listening, but kept his own month shut for now.  At least waiting for the Goldrider to answer those people as he didn't want to cause her to be swamp with various question.

----

The whole Clutch situation wasn't new for Myatka, being Weyrborn meant he'd seen various Hatchings before turning 12.  It was, however, his first clutch since becoming a Candidate so it surprised him how interested he was in the rules Delysia listed, even though most weren't all that surprising for someone familiar with Arolos.  He nodded after each thing Delysia listed off and, once she asked for questions, he looked around in silence to see who'd ask question.  He expected that it'd be more the non-Weyrborns asking questions, expected they'd have more questions than Weyrborns, so didn't want to interrupt those that needed the information.

Why, Ysolde? Just why?

The comment about pets on the sands had Rennitz nodding. Aranck was already interested in the clutch and, Rennitz knew, would be more than happy to run errands for Razelth if she wanted. The brown would be delighted to bring her fish or trinkets and if the gold firelizard wanted anything too, well he'd oblige in an instant. From his perch nearby but out of sight, Aranck sent his agreement eagerly.

Jewels In Their Setting (ATTN: Diagir)

Yiyu saw the trio of whers first. Her gaze was caught by the glint of the gold, then shifted to the awe-inspiring forms of her two companions: one brown, one green.

Forgetting herself, she stepped closer to the lake. Inch by inch she, moved focused only on the trio splashing at the edge of the lake. Freezing when a heavy hand dropped on her petite shoulder and made her look up -- and up.

Gulping hard, she studied the imposing figure beside her. Automatically, her hands moved to clasp before her, as if she were silently saying 'see, I didn't do anything'. Swallowing again, she threw another awe-filled look at the whers, then refocused on the scarred man.

"H-h--h-hello," she managed.

Yiyu startled slightly as the other young wooman appeared in front of her. The bright, welcoming smile wasn't unfamiliar; the Weyr had done nothing but welcome her. Still, she took a step or two back, clasping her hands before her in a nervous gesture.

"I'm....new," she all but whispered in agreement. "My name is Yiyu. I don't come from a  famous hold or anything..."

Yiyu closed her eyes and breathed. Excitement was almost so thick within the Weyr that you could have cut it with a knife. Her heart beat hard in her chest, her palms sweat. She couldn't imagine, if this was how things were on clutching day, what it would be like on hatching.

Eyes still closed, she rubbed her damp palms on the thighs of her outfit, then trailed them in the water of the lake where she knelt. She had never imagined she could be Searched, never thought she would amount to anything. A little voice inside her mind snidely remarked that she had yet to amount to anything, even now.

A candidate was not guaranteed Impression. That thought made her breath catch, her heart ache. She wanted to Impress, and badly. No more, she supposed, than every other boy or girl sent to stand, but in her heart she feared not doing so might break her.

Rising to her feet, she turned away from the lake and began to walk.

{{Razelth is laying.}} The phrase was stated calmly, but Vofali knew her green well enough to hear the underlying eagerness and excitement in Seisilth's tone. {{He will have his first chance soon. I am excited.}} Seisilth's eyes whirled happily at the thought of her partner's son finally being able to Stand for a dragon of his own. {{He will be a good rider, and I'm not just saying that because he's yours or I like him.}}

"Sure, sure, and the sun isn't warm," Vofali teased, laughing when that drew an indignant snort from her dragon. "No, no, dear, I understand what you mean. Surely a Searchdragon would indeed know good rider material even inside her own Weyr." That compliment had Seisilth's chest puffing up quite happily in placated pride. "Honestly? I'm nervous. I know I've seen hundreds of Hatchings if I've seen a single one, but..."

{{This one is with your own hatchling,}} The green provided softly, eyes whirling a soft blue as she put her head next to Vofali, who answered with gentle scratches to Seisilth's eye ridges. {{I can't wait to see what happens.}}

{Lyn Stand too?} came an excited query from the box in the corner where a pale green snout stuck out. Falisk's own eyes whirled an eager light blue in the dusk of her little den. Vofali laughed and sent her wher thoughts of love.

"Not yet, sweetheart. She's still got a few Turns to go before she can Stand for her own dragon."

Vofali could swear that she heard a pout from Falisk. {Fine. Lyn just no see 'Laisk long time anyway.} The green wher shuffled and turned around in her den, still definitely pouting. Vofali chuckled and turned back to her dragon.

"It's a shame H'son won't be able to see him Stand for the first time," Vofali admitted almost wistfully. "Sure, Kl'ryn will likely be there, but the boy's father said he wanted a part in the lad's life, then he goes North before he can Stand."

{{Mm. Markath's always seemed odd to me, but I like Sengroth's better anyway.}}

"Do you like Sengroth's rider, or just Sengroth himself?" Vofali teased her dragon with a grin. The huff she received in reply was enough of a victory that she let it go. "Ah well. We'll see what happens, eh? Sounds like Razelth is still in the process of laying the eggs and won't even let people see them for a while yet. He's got time."
