Ishkana was over on one side of the group. She couldn't see her cousin, and she wasn't really friends with anyone yet. She thought she'd wander through the group and see if everyone had paired up or not.

At least she'd redone her braids the night before so she didn't look scruffy.

"I know - I've been to them before. A couple times now. I even raised a paper hatchling, in one of my lessons. It's not that I'm afraid of getting hurt, it's really not that at all," he persisted, unsure how exactly to explain it. It was the loneliness, maybe. He wasn't sure.

He trailed off to shuffle forward again, and this time he was at the front of the line, accepting a hot cup of klah and a bit of bread with a grateful nod. Then, stepping to the side, he focused on the bronze rider again, attentive and respectful.

"How was it for you? If I can ask."

"Could do that.  But then we might get put on something that really
does stink," L'eo said with a shrug and a grin.  This wasn't so bad a
job, and he'd hate to get put on something worse if it sounded like he
was complaining about this task.

"Ah, well, they needed volunteers, yeah?  Kinda boring, stuck in the
Weyrling Wing all the time."

One of the downfalls of Impressing at a young age; you couldn't just
graduate to one of the actual Wings until you were at least 16, and
L'eo had another turn to go before that happened.  At least he'd have
plenty of basic experience before then.  And, though he wouldn't say
it out loud, and certainly not to R'tal, it was a chance to spend time
with his dad, however indirectly.  Being assigned to the same chore as
him at least gave L'eo a chance to chat with R'tal.  At least here he
would be noticed, even if just a bit.

Though R'tal was giving him looks that suggested he at least vaguely recalled that he *should* remember him even if he couldn't quite remember why.

"You one of the kids they've got helping the Healers then? I remember K'ren saying something about there being more of them about after that clutch of little dragons."

He'd been sent to the infirmary with a basket of clean linens, after
pestering all morning that he wanted to do something to help his
foster mother, who had been working in the laundry.  She'd finally
given him one of the baskets of dried and folded sheets and sent him
off, just to get him out of her hair for a little bit.  And really,
how much trouble could a ten turn old get into delivering sheets?  So
now Ataylan was standing in the waiting room of the Infirmary, basket
covering most of his body as he looked around for someone to tell him
just where he was supposed to set the thing.

"Sheet delivery?"  Cremsden smiled at him. "Good, we're running short. Dump them through in the store room, good kid. Someone can put them away later." He gestured, indicating one of the siderooms."

Aryn held her hand up “This tall, blond hair, age eleven and her name is Roryn.” Aryn rattled off. Her attention shifted to a dark corner momentarily and she scowled “she may be hiding out here. “Does this place have a weyr ledge with a fence up?

Cremsden called back over his shoulder to the nearest apprentice. "Sionel. Any eleven turn old girls in today?"

The boy stood still to consider. "No girls. Had a little boy in earlier who jammed his finger in the door," he offered. "And a baby who fell out his highchair."

"I think the lady was looking for a specific girl, not the closest possible replacement," Cremsden said mildly. "Right. Well, it sounds unlikely she's injured so there's one worry put to bed. We're looking for a runaway then?"

Re: What's the Number? (Qioyon, Candidates)

Asheran pursued his lips, looking over at Kirene, perhaps aware now that she'd hemmed him in to a very specific guess, where before he'd had the lower end to rely on. But she was also a girl, so he didn't mind.

"My next infirmary chore work," he countered, which in his mind upped the ante even further.

Re: Queuing for Breakfast - Second Day of the #medhunt (ATTN: Anybody!) #medhunt

mglady3@...

"Well," Asheran began, then used the shortening breakfast queue as an excuse to shuffle forward and gather his thoughts. "Yesterday, heading to the cook line for dinner, I took a shortcut, and there were a couple there in the bushes who were coupling, ah, you know." He made an okay sign with one hand, and poked the index finger of his other hand through the circle his thumb and index finger made, looking at the older man with what he hoped was a very knowledgeable look. Then he turned his head to the side, eyes slanting upward in thought.

"...and it made me think of home -- not in that way, I didn't have a girl or anything, I wouldn't dishonour any of the girls back home like that without a promise out of it, but just... I started thinking about my family, and how it's been awhile since I've seen them. It had me feeling a bit low and lonely." He chewed on the inside of his cheek, then nodded and continued, as if self-reassured by his own response: "And we'd had a lesson a couple days before about our fears and that, and it must have just weighed on me. So I had a bad dream about being on the sands again, about maybe getting injured... But I'm not afraid of being hurt, I don't think, so I don't know why I'd dream that."
_._,_._,

~~~~~~
The description of the couple in the bushes elicited an raised eyebrow from Kyn'dras. He wasn't body shy - riders generally were not and Kyn'dras had been...fond of bedroom sports even before he'd impressed. Even so, public exhibitions were not, as far as Kyn'dras knew, par for the norm, at least when there was no flight involved. But what other consenting adults got up to in their free time was none of his business, so he shrugged off the thought and focused instead on the rest of what Asheran was saying.
And in, what was for him, a rare fit of sobriety, decided to give a serious answer. "Well, accidents do happen on the sands." And somehow more often and more spectacularly at Arolos than at any other weyr. Kyn'dras didn't quite see the need to add that part. "But that's why you have candidate lessons. So that you know what do when the time comes. So that you can keep both yourself and the hatchlings safe."
Kirene listened to what the other Candidates were saying.  All their guesses were sounding kind of large given the situation they'd been having up until Razelth rose, plus the guesses were pretty close together so it would be easier to win a bet with a smaller number if others also went for the betting game.  "Yes the Golds seem to have been having...some troubles lately.  It is also the gold's first time rising at all, right?  So I'm going to say it'll be something more like 15 eggs, no queen.  With an hour of chore work as a bet."
Re: I'm not lost exactly (Ishixi/T'od)
An amused snort came from her as she took his arm, her gaze wandering over him before she snapped it back to the hall in front of her.  Hopefully he didn’t notice the slight flush that touched her cheeks.  Part of her couldn’t help but ponder how many times he had hit his head on his dragon but she wasn’t going to ask because that would be rude.  “Why thank you kind sir.” She smiled up  at him.
"That's it exactly!" T'od told her good-humouredly. "Please allow me, T'od of bronze Awsonth, to escort you to your meal. I'm probably just as hungry as you, and my dragon won't get any sense out of me until I have filled my belly. Of course, that works both ways too." He treated Ishi to an outrageous wink, even as he offered her his arm.
Tilting her head she rolled her eyes, then listened with her head tilted to her side.  “Exactly what am I meant to be hearing other than the fact that you probably have rock hard abs…and you are hungry maybe?”  Ishi was so going to get herself in trouble here if she didn’t learn to shut her mouth.  She had a good bedside manner she really did but she also didn’t know when to shut her mouth and he was a bronzer.  Yep he was trouble.
"Ahh now I understand," T'od was definitely amused, "Well no, I'm not hurt. It was a reaction to the collision, that's all. I'm pretty tough." And he thumped his stomach area to prove it. "Wait though... you hear that?" And he thumped his stomach again, waiting to see what her response would be.
Ishi groaned, “no I meant checking you for injuries.  I’m normally steady on my feet.”  She grinned at him, “my name is Ishixi, but people call me Ishi,” she licked her lips and a flush touched her cheek.  “You don’t have to go with me Sir, I mean, I’m sure you have better things to do.”  She paused and tried to not look up at him.  He was good looking but she wasn't going there.
She still looked a little dazed. T'od was pretty sure it wasn't his good looks that had shocked her, then her explanation made things plain. "So you run into people on a regular basis do you, journeyman?" he mused with a raised eyebrow, although the grin on his face indicated he wasn't annoyed. "By all means, as I'm headed there myself. It's this way." And he bowed to the healer, gesturing for her to walk in the direction he was originally going.
“I’m fine thanks.”  Ishi sighed and flicked her gaze to his knots before she snapped to attention.  Awesome she would have to bash straight into a bronze rider.  From her, albeit, very limited experience around some of the Weyrs she knew you had to be careful around them.  Egos and all that.  Her gaze drifted over him and she shook her head, “sorry Sir, I’m a newly transferred healer. I doubt me running into you would hurt you but it’s a habit.” She stepped out of his way so he could keep going where he was going to. “Umm do you know how I get to the dining hall? I seem to have gotten myself turned around.”  Maybe he would help her before he left.
"Yeouch!" T'od rocked back on his heels as he collided with someone. That was always the problem with corridors, there was no easy way to see round corners. The someone apologised and he looked down, seeing a woman. "Hey, my fault as well. The glows are a bit dim here aren't they?" He grinned at her; she didn't look familiar. "Are you alright?" He knew that Turns of riding Awsonth and woodcrafting before that had made him pretty solid. Perhaps not as painful to run into as a wall, but still.
Ishixi sighed as she walked through the corridors.  Apparently, this was MEANT to lead her towards the dining hall but she had an awful feeling that she had made a wrong turn somewhere along the way.  Ishi had only just moved to Arolos Weyr and was still trying to work out where she was going.  She had successfully worked out how to get to her ground weyr to the healers but other than that she was going blind.  Normally she wouldn’t even try and head to the dining hall but she was hungry and she hadn’t made herself anything.
“This is stupid.”  She muttered to herself as she rounded the corner and felt herself running into something very solid.  Well someone very solid.  “I’m so sorry.”  She flushed as she stood back and looked upwards.  Why was everyone taller than her?
Washing and oiling a dragon wasn't a small task, and finishing it was always satisfying.
Now they could go back to their weyr and he could work on that bit of jewellery he'd been fiddling with for months. It was almost done, after all.
He heard someone yell out and turned to look just as a wave of water splashed over them.
C'fer stood still as Panic panicked and clawed her way under his sodden tunic, her light green tail sticking out as she huddled into the pocket he'd had sewn for her there.
Abelindath turned to the Brown, eyes whirling her displeasure.
((MY BEAUTIFUL IS WET!!)) She complained.
Sengroth snorted, not really caring that someone else got wet.  {{Better than it bein' on *ME*.}}  The brown scoffed unhappily.  Though the brown was unrepentant, the brownrider waded over to the shore with a scowl shot toward his brown.  "Sorry.  He is always like that once he's allowed out of the water."  Kl'ryn said to the greenrider.
Re: What's the news? (attn Ok'lin / T'od)
Cassandra <dragonmagic16@...>
“At least she cared right?” Ok’lin pointed out, “I mean sure that would of annoyed me as well but at least she cared.”  His mother had died very young and his father had never really cared so he had missed that parent figure in his life.  “I’m glad she was wrong as well.”  He nodded because he believed everyone needed a dragon in their life and he didn’t understand anyone that refused the search tokens that were given out.  “Takoda huh? I never knew your name before you impressed.”
T'od's laugh was rueful. "Much as I loved my mother, she did love to rub it in if I fecked up, especially if she'd advised me not to do something. I can still hear her voice sometimes 'Takoda, I warned you that would happen... Didn't I say it?' and other such things like that. Really pisses a young man off, y'know? Especially one who's old enough to marry or be a Senior Apprentice by that time. Clearly she thought because she had *told* me it would go wrong, that would be enough to stop me doing it. I don't really think it ever occurred to her that I would want to find out for myself." His gaze was distant as he spoke, but then he focused on Ok'lin's face. "The one time she didn't get to say she told me so was after I was Searched, and came here to Impress Awsonth. She thought it was all a waste of time and I'd never Impress. I'm glad she was wrong."
Ok’lin looked at him curiously, “what hard way?”  Admittedly when he was younger and he had never gotten to really know the other riders, even the Weyrlings in his own hatching group, but as he got older he realised people were actually….interesting.  Each story was unique and he was enjoying puzzling it out.  Why not start with a friend?
T'od chuckled in agreement. "Same here, the more someone tells me no... Well you're right. From what I understand that's pretty much all you can do as a parent - give advice and be there. And try not to tell them 'I told you so' if they don't take your advice and feck up." Slightly quieter, he concluded, "I learned that one from my mother. The hard way." He returned the salute, taking a deep gulp of his klah. "Well we try, but there are some things they have to learn for themselves."
Ok’lin shrugged his shoulders, “just have to hope it doesn’t come to that.  I can’t tell him what to do now.  He grew up as Weyrbrat so it’s not like I can go oh I want you to not do that.”  He frowned a little.  “The more my father,” he said the name with some distaste, “told me to do something the more I dug my heels in.   Besides even if he stands it doesn’t mean he’ll impress.  Either way all I can do is give him advice and be there for him.”  Picking up his klah he gave T’od a salute, “besides that means he’ll have good guidance in people like you yeah?”
T'od concurred. "I guess you can't. It's not like he's not aware of the risks. But... I don't know... I think if I had a child I would prefer them to be in a less dangerous occupation. And of course there's the possibility of ending up dragonless, and only half-alive..." A far-from-cheery thought but one that had to be faced. There were a few dragonless folk around the Weyr and T'od couldn't even begin to comprehend his life without Awsonth in it.
