Re: Bath time (attn Teyra / T'od)

Gesturing to Teyra to come nearer, T'od cupped his hands and poured water over the worst of the muddy bits, leaving her face. "You'd better cover your eyes before I sort the rest out," he grinned, "I think 'mud in your eye' is an ancient expression, but we don't want it in this case." He chuckled at what she'd said regarding the flit, he was pretty glad he didn't have one right then and there.

Stakarth, well she had no such reservations and splashed right into the lake. Proud as could be. Once she was mostly submerged, a smallish blue flit appeared above the pair, chittering at both of them in a most disapproving fashion. If a dragon could be said to roll her eyes, the skinny little green did so. She ducked her head under the water and blew air out as bubbles at the scolding blue.

Teyra, who actually could, did roll her eyes, then looked over at T'od. "Yea they have all kinds of scents, even some kinda piney ones. And don't mind Lali, he's been my protector for ages and doesn't much like when Stakarth and I go getting all dirty."

Awsonth was happy to follow, although he knew that if he started splashing about there would be some very wet people due to his size. That would be inconsiderate of him, to say the least.

Teyra grinned a little and waved towards the lake. "Come on then Stakarth let's get you rinsed shall we?"

The spry little green raised her head high, not the least bit ashamed of her mud, and walked into the water with high splashy steps. ((Oh as long as I want, or as long as I am allowed. They aren't always the same, you can come join me if you want.))

You never itch afterwards? The bronze's mindtone was thoughtful. It definitely sounded like it had exfoliating or moisturising effects. I will ask my rider to take us there sometime. The green's mind filled with a small dock, a wide floodplain, the river with many channels heading into the ocean, and the spot with her special mud, three sandbars away from the town nearby. Awsonth looked Stakarth over carefully. It is possible that such deep, fine silt is extremely good for the hide. Softening and cleansing properties, perhaps. I believe that there are some ladies who would want to try it for themselves. Will you show me pictures of where it was?

T'od couldn't fault his logic, which was no surprise,so he agreed and the pair winged their way down to the lake. One of their preferred spots was already taken by a number of splashing and cavorting young dragons, so they went a little further than normal. Coming down by a green pair, whose names T'od wasn't sure of, he waved anyway as he removed Awsonth's harness.

"Lovely day for it, isn't it?" he called across to the green's rider.

Ishkana thought for a moment before answering. "Perhaps a slate hung above your bunk that says 'ointment' on it? And an outdoor bag with a hat, a light-coloured shirt and a smaller jar of ointment in it? To take everywhere you go." She shrugged one shoulder, "It takes a while to learn new habits I think, so have you got a friend in the next bunk, or that you see every day, who could remind you too?"

She stopped so Maithera would know she was waiting on confirmation for what she'd said.

Then I got distracted and by the time I felt the burn it was too late, so I came straight here."

Ysolde was matter of fact about it and didn't display any signs of self pity. Later on, when the pain really set in, that would probably change a bit. She offered a sheepish smile at the other girl. "I do know better and I'm not always so scatter-brained. I just get distracted really easily if I'm concentrating on something."

Ysolde nodded, she was used to this and besides, it wasn't nosiness, it was professionalism. There was a difference. She waved at Ishkana, offering a small smile in return.

"Ysolde here hails from the North, as is very evident by her fair complexion and hair colour - not something that is as common here in the South." As she spoke, Maithera gestured to to the body parts in question. "So we do have a burn risk already, however as you can see, Ysolde already has substantial burn scars on her back, these travel from her nape of her neck to almost the small of her back with some extension onto the tops of her shoulders and top of her arms. These burns are significant and still susceptible to sun damage, as is evident here..." Maithera pointed to the angry sunburn on Ysolde's arms and neck.

"Ysolde is provided with protective lotions and given a strict regime in order to prevent further burn.. such as?" And here she looked pointedly at Ysolde who took the cue. "Wear a hat and cover up," she mumbled but loud enough to be audible.

The voice of the Healer coming through the curtains was exasperated, as though they had given this particular lecture many, many times before.

"If you're not going to use the ointments we make for you, we'll end up stopping making them altogether, or give them to someone else."

The voice that followed was morose and feeling more than a little sorry for itself.

"I know. I just.. I was looking for raw gems near the Lake. I didn't realise I had been out so long."

"That's all well and good, but now I've got to sign you off outdoor lessons for at least a sevenday so this burn can heal. You don't want to  be making an enemy of Candidatemaster Nayari, she's stern enough without you being in her bad books as well."

A loud sigh followed, chased after by a pained yelp.

"No, don't try and do it on your own." Maithera stuck her head out of the curtains and spotted a passing Apprentice. "Ishkana!" the Journeywoman smiled at her, beckoning her in. "Ysolde here could use a hand, she's sustained some very nasty sunburn on existing scars, would you be so kind to come and help? She needs a hand putting this ointment on."

And inside the cubicle, sat on the bed with a vest on to preserve her modesty, was a very sulky looking Ysolde, bottom lip thrust out as she awkwardly tried to remain comfortable.

Ishkana definitely was uncomfortable with the subject, but as a new healer apprentice it was stuff she needed to know about. "Mam," she said immediately once they were in the smaller room, "I know what's meant to happen to a woman's body when she matures, but..." She gestured at her relatively flat chest and lack of curves. "Nothing's happening, and I've fourteen Turns! Is something wrong with me?"

There were some things though that she really wasn't sure of - one of them being her. And learning healing meant she knew a little more than before. Enough to know that something wasn't quite right.

When she found a relatively quiet time, she approached one of the more senior healers for some advice. "Vashinta, mam? Do you have a little time so I could speak with you please?" she asked tentatively. This wasn't going to be easy, but it needed doing.

Teyra nodded, the movement dropping a few bits of mud from her face and hair. Once they were in to the water a bit, well it didn't take long at all before the rather slight woman couldn't touch the bottom anymore. She ducked under the water, scrubbing her face and hair rapidly. Emerging, though still  a few mud splats were visible, her blonde hair, and freckles were now rather evident.

Re: Despair on the Wings of a flit. (Alyx/ Cremsden)

Alyx

Alyx couldn't help a chuckle at Cremsden's delivery. And in a way she did agree with him, some of the riders she knew really didn't think much of other kinds of pain. She'd seen riders with broken bones in their hands, who hadn't come in when it happened cause 'eh it's just a little pain' Then of course, things had to at times be rebroken and set straight, which lead to more pain, and more recovery time. And sometimes even some loss of feeling.

"Yea I've seen some of that too Cremsden. But I've also seen crafters do some of the same kinds of things, so I think it's just a people thing. They don't want to admit to needing a healer. Heck I've done it when I was younger, and I ought to know better!" Alyx was willing to admit her failings in that way at least.

Then there was a little poof of air behind her, and her bronze flit Ardy was there. As she turned to greet the flit, her face went from happy and enjoying the conversation, to worried. Ardy was quite upset, and it took her a moment to get him to land on her arm. There was a message tied to his collar. Once he landed, and she removed the message, the flit, who wasn't normally too affectionate while they were in the infirmary, pressed himself up against the girl's side. Alyx didn't stop him either. She rolled open the note, reading it, the color drained from her face. This couldn't be right, it couldn't...

"That's a really good idea. We do get more than our share of burns sometimes. It's even worse in some of the riders, have you noticed? I wonder if it is because when they aren't flying a Fall they dress like the rest of us, but are up where there's no shade. Nothing but clouds between them and the sun. I had one in the other day asking for cream for a burn, and you could just tell they had done this several times before. There were scars from blisters. So I gave them a large bottle of sun cream." This was something that she had been looking into for a while. There were sunburns nearly everyday around the weyr. And these people, most of them ought to know better.

Cremsden laughed. "You might have a point with them being higher up, but I'm betting a large part of it is riders being riders," he predicted. "They expect Fall to be what kills them off eventually, so they consider themselves basically immune to everything else. They might not think it consciously but you dig under the skin of most riders and they consider Thread to be about this dangerous--" he waved a hand about shoulder-height "and everything else to be about this dangerous--" this time just above the table "and thus not a risk even worth spending time thinking about." He grinned ruefully. "You might think the pain would stop them but eh. Riders. Doesn't hurt as much as a score, not worth bothering about."

Ishkana beamed at him. That was a nice clear information request. "I can read well, write okay and do numbers. I know numbweed is generally used for skin or muscle pain, and fellis for inside pain. Redwort is to make things clean and stops the effects of numbweed on a healer's hands. I can make klah and fold bandages, and I don't really have a problem with blood although if someone's sick on me I may throw up too. I generally only got to watch bits and pieces in the Hold, and not do anything except tidying, stirring numbweed kettles and sweeping the floor. Oh, and I'm quite fast at picking and packing needlethorn."

We can work to fill in gaps but my life is a lot easier if I know that the gaps are there and need to be filled than if we proceed assuming that knowing how to do a certain thing is standard and end up with you lost." He smiled at her. "Conversely, particularly if you've done any work at all in an Infirmary, there's no point wasting everyone's time by teaching you basics you're already solid on."

Re: Planning Escape Attn Lerian, Lesal, Kel

Alyx

Lerian, unlike some of the other candidates who had been recruited, had actually volunteered to come on this excursion. Since arriving in Arolos he'd not left the weyr much at all, and wanted to familiarize himself with the area as much as he could.  He had just about wandered the entire way around the camp, and was looking for something to do. He was a bit small for his age and many people didn't take his willingness to help seriously. So he'd grabbed a small bag, and filled it with food, mostly snacky stuff that would be easy for boys to eat. He was accompanied by two flits, the bronze Sandy, and the tiny blue Star who was riding his shoulder.

Then he spotted someone who seemed to be in pretty much the same boat as him. Then as he walked over, he recognized the other boy. That made him happy, not only that he knew another kid here, but that Kel had been allowed to come when he'd been so sick. A few paces out Lerian greeted the pair with a grin.

"Hey Kel, Gavorth. I'm glad to see you guys out. How you feeling? I know I'm pretty bored just sitting around camp. I came here to see things!"

On Fri, Aug 17, 2018 at 2:06 AM, Laura Walker <shewhoguards@...> wrote:
An outing was great, but only if you were allowed to actually explore.

It was the first time Kel had been allowed out since his bad brush with measles. The twelve turn old had lost very quickly the weight he had managed to build during Weyrlinghood. He was fragile-looking just now; pale and skinny, as though a strong breeze might knock him over. And Evrand had judged that a bit of fresh air might do him good, and besides there were likely to be more Healers on the expedition than in the Weyr and so Kel had been allowed out with a weight of instructions. Stay close, be good, don't over-exert. For a boy used to slipping away to clamber up the nearest tree it was an unsatisfying prospect.

He was slumped with Gavroth now, watching people scurry about busily. Occasionally he sneaked a look back to see how much attention Evand was actually paying and whether sneaking off was a possibility.

"You mean R'tal?" It was the only one she could think of, and the young woman reached out to Stakarth who was sunning on a sandy  spot near the river. (Stakarth, speak to Talith, please. Ask him to have his rider call of his wher?)

Stakarth, barely awake for the message, yawned greatly and sleepily passed on the request, with some additional information. ((Talith? Your's wher had my rider up a tree. She is...afraid of them.))

"Oh, you don't need to do that. D'vik is just fine." The big man said with a smile. He was beginning to feel more relaxed than he thought was normal after such a day, but that was alright.

"You're welcome to share my shade. Sun is brutal today. Glad the day's about over myself."

Perhaps a brownrider or even a bronzer.
She didn't have all the rankers memorized like she had at Fort. Perhaps she needed to do something about that, she thought, blushing a little as she took in the very nice view his short being off gave her.

D'vik was idly watching people walk around, getting stew and finding spots to sit, mostly out of the glare of the sun. He'd spread his shirt out on the ground as a sort of picnic blanket. Of course being a large man, this meant his shirt took up a nice chunk of space. He leaned back slowly against the tree, stretching his neck from side to side. It was more than warm, it was hot. With a tired groan, D'vik brought first one foot, then the other up, taking off his boots, and tossing them next to the truck of the tree. He found himself, still uncomfortable, but for the moment put up with it. His eyes seemingly of their own accord followed Chasser as she came, and sat down near where he was. She didn't say anything as she did so, but he felt a burning need to gather her attention.

"Evening. Hot working today, wasn't it?" He called out, keeping his voice pitched softly so as not to startle her.

"On no sir, never seen anything like it. It was so bright, I am surprised more people didn't see it but I guess most folks aren't out so late. They're in eating dinner and all." Lerian paused a moment, in thought, knowing he really ought not criticize a rider, but also being a bit young and impulsive still. "Why d'ya call him Becky?" He didn't realize it at the time, but they were getting pretty close to the man's weyr. That was good cause Lerian really wanted to know what it was that he saw. Sandy rode quietly on the boy's shoulder, looking around with great interest.

Maark'l thought on the images that the little bronze was showing him. A moving bright light that just disappeared. Even that was something new. "I'm not sure what that could be little one. I don't think I've even seen something like that before."

As he was falling the flit, he watched to see if he could find the owner. Maybe he might be able to fill in some more information about what it was that was seen. ((Not sure, Beckarth, but it looks like a fireball.))

----------------

Lerian spotted Sandy, and the rider he'd found just ahead of him, and still down hill on the path. He tried to slow down, he really did, but running down the Rim path full speed, left him too little time and space to adequately react. Putting his left foot down to try and stop, since he had stopped looking at his footing it came down in a pile of loose rocks, that combined with momentum launched the boy right off his feet, and towards the rider.

Sandy gave an alarmed squeel and grabbed ahold of the boy's hair trying to stop the inevitable tumble, unfortunately all he ended up with was a clawful of Lerian's hair

She was unsure which base would work best, and slowly becoming aware of just how long Ardy had been gone. It never took this long for her Grandfather to write a reply note. Since she'd gotten Ardy used to Betweening, they hadn't really bothered writing long letters. They wrote back and forth several times a day.

"If you're wanting to specialise in skin, I'd keep an eye out for sunburn cases," Cremsden suggested. "They're fairly endemic around here, particularly in Northerners who move over without appreciating that the difference is more than wearing lighter clothing a lot of the time and I don't believe there's really that much monitoring done in terms of how many of our cases end up with longer term issues. There's some interesting work to be done there if it would appeal to you."

T'od's laugh was rueful. "Much as I loved my mother, she did love to rub it in if I fecked up, especially if she'd advised me not to do something. I can still hear her voice sometimes 'Takoda, I warned you that would happen... Didn't I say it?' and other such things like that. Really pisses a young man off, y'know? Especially one who's old enough to marry or be a Senior Apprentice by that time. Clearly she thought because she had *told* me it would go wrong, that would be enough to stop me doing it. I don't really think it ever occurred to her that I would want to find out for myself." His gaze was distant as he spoke, but then he focused on Ok'lin's face. "The one time she didn't get to say she told me so was after I was Searched, and came here to Impress Awsonth. She thought it was all a waste of time and I'd never Impress. I'm glad she was wrong."

Ok’lin shrugged his shoulders, “just have to hope it doesn’t come to that.  I can’t tell him what to do now.  He grew up as Weyrbrat so it’s not like I can go oh I want you to not do that.”  He frowned a little.  “The more my father,” he said the name with some distaste, “told me to do something the more I dug my heels in.   Besides even if he stands it doesn’t mean he’ll impress.  Either way all I can do is give him advice and be there for him.”  Picking up his klah he gave T’od a salute, “besides that means he’ll have good guidance in people like you yeah?”

T'od concurred. "I guess you can't. It's not like he's not aware of the risks. But... I don't know... I think if I had a child I would prefer them to be in a less dangerous occupation. And of course there's the possibility of ending up dragonless, and only half-alive..." A far-from-cheery thought but one that had to be faced. There were a few dragonless folk around the Weyr and T'od couldn't even begin to comprehend his life without Awsonth in it.

To Work, Ducklings! Attn Baby Apprentice Healers #medhunt

Laura Walker

It was afternoon on the second day before Cremsden even had time to pull the younger apprentices off the work they were doing on fellis and numbweed and gather them into a group.

When had they managed to get such a group of youngsters, anyway? He had been vaguely conscious of more kids arriving one at a time but it took seeing them in a group -- a veritable herd of small eager faces -- to realise just how many there had been lately, and just how young they all were.

Well, work out what to do in terms of training them later. There was work to do first.

"First things," he said firmly. "*Someone* decided it would be funny to spike some of the food with passionberries last night." He glanced over the young faces, looking for signs of guilt or humour. "I understand that might seem a funny prank at this stage to some of you, but the Hall has other phrases for that kind of behaviour and they involve nasty words like "theft", "abuse of medicinal substances" and if you get really unlucky and accidentally dose someone with a pre-existing condition, "murder". We might be handling substances that have occasional comedic side-effects but it's our job to know better."

He eyed them again, still looking for the guilty flush. "Everyone gets to feck up *once*," he said. "If someone decided to develop an inappropriate sense of humour last night find me later and we'll have a quick chat. In the meantime we have work to do." He produced a piece of hide from his pocket with a flourish. "Things are moving well now, so we have time to go searching for extra herbs which might be useful. I want you all to take a good look at this and then I can free you to spend the afternoon exploring and see if you can see any sign of it." Apparently what they were searching for was a plant with small yellow flowers -- otherwise looking like fairly ordinary greenery.

"Now, there are rules," he said. "We're out in the middle of nowhere here so no-one gets to go off alone. At the very least I want you in pairs if not more and if either of the pair has a firelizard that's all the better. You come back by dinner time and if you don't we'll have search parties out for you, and they're likely to be a bit displeased if it turns out you just took a nap. Be careful and I don't care if you think you find something that you grew in your own garden at the hold since you were toddling you do not put anything in your mouths. Don't even go absent mindedly chewing your nails after picking berries. There are a lot of things out there which might look familiar and have unexpected side effects. I do not want to spend the afternoon treating an unexpected poisoning, are we clear? Take water, don't spend too long in the sun and try not to get yourselves eaten by anything, please. Any questions?"

OOC: If you have a Healer apprentice of 15 or under assume they're in this group.

Cremsden blinked, but it wasn't as though parents getting agitated if they thought their children were hurt was an unusual Infirmary event.

"Name, age, any kind of description?" he prompted. "And do you know what happened? I don't think we've had any little girls brought in this morning but I can check."

The hides were interesting, and she traced her fingers over the words, mouth moving as she worked to memorise as much as possible. She wished she had the hide to copy it down but that would be far too much of a giveaway where she was going.

She wanted to keep reading her stolen, er, borrowed apprentice notes- they were more interesting then the stuff that they kept getting her to read in the crèche by far.

It was perhaps to no ones surprise, least of all her own, that she kept reading well past the time she was supposed to have been safely back in crèche.

Aryn was, to say the least, frantic. Roryn was missing- shards knows when or for how long. She did the only thing she could think- she pulled a harness and goggles onto Stoppit, the green wher and sent her out looking.

It was perhaps to her own benefit that, even with her handlers worry thrumming through the bond, the green wher stopped before going into the weyr infirmary.

((Ryn pup in. Stoppit Stop ere. No wher place. Stoppit gud gurl)) the green crooned, snuggling against Aryn before making herself as unobtrusive as possible against the wall.

Aryn practically stormed into the infirmary, eyes focussed as she looked around for anyone in charge. She approached one person, eyes steely. “Where the feck is my daughter.”

Ooc: I’ve just realised- Stoppit May have told her wher she was.....but Aryn doesn’t know that she isn’t hurt.
