"That's a really good idea. We do get more than our share of burns sometimes. It's even worse in some of the riders, have you noticed? I wonder if it is because when they aren't flying a Fall they dress like the rest of us, but are up where there's no shade. Nothing but clouds between them and the sun. I had one in the other day asking for cream for a burn, and you could just tell they had done this several times before. There were scars from blisters. So I gave them a large bottle of sun cream." This was something that she had been looking into for a while. There were sunburns nearly everyday around the weyr. And these people, most of them ought to know better.

Cremsden laughed. "You might have a point with them being higher up, but I'm betting a large part of it is riders being riders," he predicted. "They expect Fall to be what kills them off eventually, so they consider themselves basically immune to everything else. They might not think it consciously but you dig under the skin of most riders and they consider Thread to be about this dangerous--" he waved a hand about shoulder-height "and everything else to be about this dangerous--" this time just above the table "and thus not a risk even worth spending time thinking about." He grinned ruefully. "You might think the pain would stop them but eh. Riders. Doesn't hurt as much as a score, not worth bothering about."

"On no sir, never seen anything like it. It was so bright, I am surprised more people didn't see it but I guess most folks aren't out so late. They're in eating dinner and all." Lerian paused a moment, in thought, knowing he really ought not criticize a rider, but also being a bit young and impulsive still. "Why d'ya call him Becky?" He didn't realize it at the time, but they were getting pretty close to the man's weyr. That was good cause Lerian really wanted to know what it was that he saw. Sandy rode quietly on the boy's shoulder, looking around with great interest.

Maark'l thought on the images that the little bronze was showing him. A moving bright light that just disappeared. Even that was something new. "I'm not sure what that could be little one. I don't think I've even seen something like that before."

As he was falling the flit, he watched to see if he could find the owner. Maybe he might be able to fill in some more information about what it was that was seen. ((Not sure, Beckarth, but it looks like a fireball.))

----------------

Lerian spotted Sandy, and the rider he'd found just ahead of him, and still down hill on the path. He tried to slow down, he really did, but running down the Rim path full speed, left him too little time and space to adequately react. Putting his left foot down to try and stop, since he had stopped looking at his footing it came down in a pile of loose rocks, that combined with momentum launched the boy right off his feet, and towards the rider.

Sandy gave an alarmed squeel and grabbed ahold of the boy's hair trying to stop the inevitable tumble, unfortunately all he ended up with was a clawful of Lerian's hair

T'od's laugh was rueful. "Much as I loved my mother, she did love to rub it in if I fecked up, especially if she'd advised me not to do something. I can still hear her voice sometimes 'Takoda, I warned you that would happen... Didn't I say it?' and other such things like that. Really pisses a young man off, y'know? Especially one who's old enough to marry or be a Senior Apprentice by that time. Clearly she thought because she had *told* me it would go wrong, that would be enough to stop me doing it. I don't really think it ever occurred to her that I would want to find out for myself." His gaze was distant as he spoke, but then he focused on Ok'lin's face. "The one time she didn't get to say she told me so was after I was Searched, and came here to Impress Awsonth. She thought it was all a waste of time and I'd never Impress. I'm glad she was wrong."

To Work, Ducklings! Attn Baby Apprentice Healers #medhunt

Laura Walker

It was afternoon on the second day before Cremsden even had time to pull the younger apprentices off the work they were doing on fellis and numbweed and gather them into a group.

When had they managed to get such a group of youngsters, anyway? He had been vaguely conscious of more kids arriving one at a time but it took seeing them in a group -- a veritable herd of small eager faces -- to realise just how many there had been lately, and just how young they all were.

Well, work out what to do in terms of training them later. There was work to do first.

"First things," he said firmly. "*Someone* decided it would be funny to spike some of the food with passionberries last night." He glanced over the young faces, looking for signs of guilt or humour. "I understand that might seem a funny prank at this stage to some of you, but the Hall has other phrases for that kind of behaviour and they involve nasty words like "theft", "abuse of medicinal substances" and if you get really unlucky and accidentally dose someone with a pre-existing condition, "murder". We might be handling substances that have occasional comedic side-effects but it's our job to know better."

He eyed them again, still looking for the guilty flush. "Everyone gets to feck up *once*," he said. "If someone decided to develop an inappropriate sense of humour last night find me later and we'll have a quick chat. In the meantime we have work to do." He produced a piece of hide from his pocket with a flourish. "Things are moving well now, so we have time to go searching for extra herbs which might be useful. I want you all to take a good look at this and then I can free you to spend the afternoon exploring and see if you can see any sign of it." Apparently what they were searching for was a plant with small yellow flowers -- otherwise looking like fairly ordinary greenery.

"Now, there are rules," he said. "We're out in the middle of nowhere here so no-one gets to go off alone. At the very least I want you in pairs if not more and if either of the pair has a firelizard that's all the better. You come back by dinner time and if you don't we'll have search parties out for you, and they're likely to be a bit displeased if it turns out you just took a nap. Be careful and I don't care if you think you find something that you grew in your own garden at the hold since you were toddling you do not put anything in your mouths. Don't even go absent mindedly chewing your nails after picking berries. There are a lot of things out there which might look familiar and have unexpected side effects. I do not want to spend the afternoon treating an unexpected poisoning, are we clear? Take water, don't spend too long in the sun and try not to get yourselves eaten by anything, please. Any questions?"

OOC: If you have a Healer apprentice of 15 or under assume they're in this group.

The straight forward approach of the newcomer was appreciated. Ysolde hated faffing around. Maithera nodded at the apprentice, acknowledging the correctness in her presumptions. "You're absolutely right there, Ishkana, well done. What suggestions would you recommend for someone in this situation and how would you consider putting them into practice?"

Then I got distracted and by the time I felt the burn it was too late, so I came straight here."

Ysolde was matter of fact about it and didn't display any signs of self pity. Later on, when the pain really set in, that would probably change a bit. She offered a sheepish smile at the other girl. "I do know better and I'm not always so scatter-brained. I just get distracted really easily if I'm concentrating on something."

"Ysolde here hails from the North, as is very evident by her fair complexion and hair colour - not something that is as common here in the South." As she spoke, Maithera gestured to to the body parts in question. "So we do have a burn risk already, however as you can see, Ysolde already has substantial burn scars on her back, these travel from her nape of her neck to almost the small of her back with some extension onto the tops of her shoulders and top of her arms. These burns are significant and still susceptible to sun damage, as is evident here..." Maithera pointed to the angry sunburn on Ysolde's arms and neck.

"Ysolde is provided with protective lotions and given a strict regime in order to prevent further burn.. such as?" And here she looked pointedly at Ysolde who took the cue. "Wear a hat and cover up," she mumbled but loud enough to be audible.

The voice that followed was morose and feeling more than a little sorry for itself.

"I know. I just.. I was looking for raw gems near the Lake. I didn't realise I had been out so long."

"That's all well and good, but now I've got to sign you off outdoor lessons for at least a sevenday so this burn can heal. You don't want to  be making an enemy of Candidatemaster Nayari, she's stern enough without you being in her bad books as well."

A loud sigh followed, chased after by a pained yelp.

"No, don't try and do it on your own." Maithera stuck her head out of the curtains and spotted a passing Apprentice. "Ishkana!" the Journeywoman smiled at her, beckoning her in. "Ysolde here could use a hand, she's sustained some very nasty sunburn on existing scars, would you be so kind to come and help? She needs a hand putting this ointment on."

And inside the cubicle, sat on the bed with a vest on to preserve her modesty, was a very sulky looking Ysolde, bottom lip thrust out as she awkwardly tried to remain comfortable.

She didn't want to get her hopes up when she saw the girl making her way towards her. Ysolde didn't even realise she was holding her breath until she let it out in a whoosh of air. It was reassuring to see that the girl looked about as awkward as she felt. This went against her principles on so many levels. Normally, she preferred to sit in the corner, quietly feeling everyone out and then making a decision from there. This felt much too.. disorganised.

Never the less, it was a relief for someone to have answered her literal call and she smiled in relief. "I'm Ysolde," she said, swinging her bag up onto her shoulder. "You're the first, which means by my reckoning, you get first dibs."

She didn’t want to push her way in but she also knew that if she didn’t get out more she was going to end up much more lonely than she was now.  She needed friends and this was one way to do it right?

When no one replied directly to her post, Ysolde tried to quell the disappointment and told herself that people probably just hadn't been paying attention. Instead, she trotted along to the main meeting point. She really wanted to go out on this adventure but at the same time, didn't want to lie to her father and go out on her own. Not to  mention, that just wouldn't be any fun at all.

Finding the gathered troops, flanked by various seniors, Crafters and Candidatemasters, Ysolde decided to be brave and just go for it. Cupping her hands around her mouth, she shouted over the group. "Anyone want to team up and go searching together?"

She had no idea what they were even meant to be looking for but maybe the Healers would fill them in on that. She had heard someone say something about numbweed and other plants that the Healers use, but her knowledge about plants was about as comprehensive as fresh snow before someone walked on it. In other words, blanker than a new slate.

When she had told her father that she had signed up to go on this exploration to the ruins with the Healers, he had been less than enamoured with the idea.Even less so when he decided that the Candidates were going to be allowed to practically run riot. Not true, of course, but that was fatherly paranoia for you.

Eventually, after sending a stern letter to Nayari enquiring about the matter, Ysolde had been given his blessings to go. Sort of. But only under strict instructions that she was to find a buddy and that she wasn't going to be going ANYWHERE without them. But it was a compromise at least. After the lecture about keeping covered up, carrying plenty of water and wearing a hat.

The afternoon before they were supposed to set off, Ysolde set up a notice on the main message board at the front of the Barracks. There was no way that it wasn't going to  be seen by at least someone, you had to pass it every time you left the Barracks.

Looking for an adventurer!
Are you joining the Healer hunt?
Looking for someone to stick with?
Meet me here after breakfast tomorrow!

No, it wasn't exactly award winning prose, but hopefully it would catch someone's eye. Truth be told, the more she thought on it, the more she thought that having someone to go with was probably the best thing to do. Didn't someone mention a wher attack the last time?

So there she was after breakfast, her bag packed with all the essential supplies she could think of, waiting nervously by her notice. Well, if push came to shove, she would just join the group and hope for the best, but hopefully it wouldn't come to that.

Cremsden thought for a moment. "He likes hunting tunnelsnakes?" he offered. "Eh. Could be looking for food? Not other firelizards so much, he doesn't tend to hang out with any but his two." And they definitely were Bitey's two in Cremsden's mind -- he was just the guy who happened to feed them.

Tyne was just about to ask how Bitey had felt the last time Cremsden had seen him before she remembered that the Healer had a different relationship with his flits than most. In fact, most of the time it was almost like he couldn't really hear them at all. "Do you know where they are now? They might be able to give some idea of where Bitey might be, or even what Bitey was thinking.Bobbin could help with that too."

Planning Escape Attn Lerian, Lesal, Kel

Laura Walker

An outing was great, but only if you were allowed to actually explore.

It was the first time Kel had been allowed out since his bad brush with measles. The twelve turn old had lost very quickly the weight he had managed to build during Weyrlinghood. He was fragile-looking just now; pale and skinny, as though a strong breeze might knock him over. And Evrand had judged that a bit of fresh air might do him good, and besides there were likely to be more Healers on the expedition than in the Weyr and so Kel had been allowed out with a weight of instructions. Stay close, be good, don't over-exert. For a boy used to slipping away to clamber up the nearest tree it was an unsatisfying prospect.

He was slumped with Gavroth now, watching people scurry about busily. Occasionally he sneaked a look back to see how much attention Evand was actually paying and whether sneaking off was a possibility.

Re: Hi, hi, hi! Wanna Play?(Teyra/Tyren/R'tal) #medhunt

Laura Walker

Teyra clutched at the tree as it creaked and groaned under the assault. This tree wasn't sturdy enough to climb further up, to where Stakarth could pick her up, and there was no where open enough for the green to land. And the wher's person was 'busy' great..just great. Teyra took a deep breath, trying not to panic, panic didn't solve anything. But she really wished the wher would just go. Wait...Tal?

"What's your person's name again?"

((Tal!)) Tyren proclaimed happily. ((Tal and Ren. Busy with smells-bad.)) He wrinkled his nose in remembered disgust. ((Said 'go play Ty'.))

Re: Fancy Seeing You Here Attn Zy'fen

Laura Walker

Zy'fen and Nerenth took wing after thr younger pair, and circled in a different direction, seeking a place to go that was away from the other activity. They turned when Robith pointed out the lake, ((We see it....Do you think I need a bath?)) Nerenth didnt think so, his Zy'fen had been good about removing all the dust from his hide. But maybe....
They circled toward the lake the others had found, and Nerenth mentally queried Zy ((Do you think I need a bath?))

Of course Robith passed that back to his rider and J'lin was laughing; the hand over his face not entirely hiding it as they landed.

((You shouldn't tease.))
((Anyone normal would have known I was joking!)) Robith protested as J'lin attempted to look a little more sober. It didn't work; little snorts of laughter kept escaping.

Rhosgen looked at the dead face of the wherry for a moment before nodding.
It wasn't a fish but if it got the wher to get him un-lost then he'd do it.
He picked the dead wherry up and let the wher guide him, trying not to think about how the wherry felt in his grasp.
_._,_._,_

And Tyren led him back to camp, stepping calmly over and between sleeping partially dressed and undressed bodies that in some cases were still curled around each other. ((Find Tal?)) he suggested brightly.

Re: What will I be? (Attn: Cremsden, Jerronila)

“Hmm.” Off the top of his head Cremsden could think of multiple reasons someone might not want their kid at the hall. Some were most definitely better than others.

“Any conditions or recent illnesses?”

Re: Surely That Is What Numbweed Smells Like Attn Any #medhunt

"Dunno," L'eo replied, watching his own pot.  "I only ever handled the finished stuff."

When he'd been assigned this job, the young blue rider had been as annoyed as anyone would be, given all the stories about how bad it smelled, but this?  This wasn't too bad.

"Maybe we should have asked more questions." R'tal got up to stir the pot, getting the numbweed a half-hearted prod before he sat back down. "So. What got you all the way out here?"

Ishkana was starting to settle in to her new life in the Weyr. It still had its very odd moments and she still wasn't entirely comfortable with some of the things that went on, but it was quite possibly a normal reaction from someone holdbred as she was. She didn't know that for certain, but she knew she had to get used to it.

There were some things though that she really wasn't sure of - one of them being her. And learning healing meant she knew a little more than before. Enough to know that something wasn't quite right.

When she found a relatively quiet time, she approached one of the more senior healers for some advice. "Vashinta, mam? Do you have a little time so I could speak with you please?" she asked tentatively. This wasn't going to be easy, but it needed doing.
