Re: Out Of Tune Attn Apprentice Harpers/Candidate Harpers
Cameron Stanley
It was bad enough that Rennick had to sing at all. Just thinking about it made him break out in a cold sweat and caused his jaw to tighten until he could barely force it open, let alone produce anything resembling music. Nervousness was foreign to him when he sat down with his guitar, and he didn't mind the other instruments either, but singing... singing was the one thing he absolutely couldn't do. Back at Harper Hall he'd gotten out of any singing through various means, usually going to play his instrument instead. But here, at least for the time being, he could not rely on such tactics to escape the choir rehearsals. Rennick thought this was foolish at best, but once his superiors heard how horrible his singing voice was, they'd be forced to acknowledge that he wasn't cut out for that particular line of work. Still, it hadn't been long since his arrival, so he supposed maybe that hadn't had enough time to sink in. Nor was Rennick one to stand out if he could help it, and taking the initiative to get transferred out of lessons was beyond him, especially while he was still trying to navigate the choppy waters of Arolos. So for the time being he went along with it, even if he was thinking every single class, 'Please hear my voice. Please hear how unskilled I am. Please decide that I would be better off elsewhere.'
Near the end of one particularly dreadful rehearsal, where he'd finally managed to unstick his jaw and sing along softly with his neighbors-- if he was slightly off-key-- he was confronted quite unexpectedly, by some kid a few rows ahead of him. It wasn't even like Rennick was singing a particularly notable part; he had been stuck with one of the background melodies, which suited him just fine, aside from the fact that it was still singing at all. But apparently his ineptitude had not gone unnoticed by everyone.
He found a slow flush creeping into his cheeks as the boy turned around and berated him loudly. Rennick wasn't sure of what to say. In the first place, this kid was probably half his age or so, and he wasn't used to hearing such critical words from children that age. Rennick's younger brother hadn't been so acerbic at that age. Rennick himself certainly hadn't. A quick glance to either side showed that his neighbors weren't immediately prepared to offer support. And why should they, he realized glumly. After all, he HAD been off-key. Whenever Rennick sang it was off-key. He was so tense, and his vocal cords so rigid, that sometimes he could hardly squeak out a note at all. But still, to be confronted in front of the entire group was humiliating. "I-- I'm sorry," he stammered. He didn't have much of a defense, especially not when he himself didn't even want to sing. "You're right." Something quiet stirred in the back of his mind. He wasn't a waste of time, he thought helplessly. But singing, well, yes that was certainly a waste of time.

Rin gave Diagir a nod in response, a half-smile on his face. He was astonished that the man was acting friendly, but happy as well. Despite his natural dislike for authority, he rather liked and respected the wher handler.

Vofali had indeed been about to make that assumption when Dekel clarified. She offered him a smile before nodding. "I see. Well, before my dragon Searched you, why did you want to Stand? Is it just because that's what weyrbrats are expected to do, or do you truly want to be a rider? Also, if you weren't born at Arolos, where are you from?" Dekel frowned, "no. I want to be a rider because I love dragons and I know how important dragonriders are." The young lad was suddenly very still, and very serious. "I know first hand how dangerous fighting thread is, both my parents have been injured, one time seriously injured." He said it softly, the memory still scared him, he drew up though, "some people know though right? They know what they are meant to do to and I am meant to stand. I want the chance to be like my parents more than anything in the world. To be like you. To help defend Arolos Weyr." The breath whoosed out of him and he again came like the small child he still was. "I... I'm not sure." He said, ducking his head so she couldn't see his face. "My parents found me at the mid year gather, I was like four or five, I had a note saying I was four." He told her, "I don't remember before them."**

Re: First Step, Chat with WW ((Attn: Kassia, Kinara))
Rosiegirl
As Kassia began speaking and said she needed to be blunt, Kinara's head came up in concern about what the WW might say. As her eyes lifted, Kinara did see the sympathetic expression on the other's face and felt just a little more at ease about discussing this with Kassia. As the concern was voiced, a concern Kinara had had herself many times before, a relieved expression crossed Kinara's face at Kassia saying something she'd considered herself. Nodding her head, Kinara replied honestly with "Ma'am, it's that exact worry and not wanting to hurt any dragon that's caused me to take so long before trying to become a candidate again."
Taking a breath, hoping she wasn't about to give too much in an answer, Kinara said "At Fort, when I stopped being a candidate it wasn't just because of having my daughter. It was because not only did I not think of myself as worth a dragon, as worth anything, but I also couldn't...well I guess it would be easiest to say I couldn't function. I panicked and had flashbacks and nightmares all the time. But, then I made a few friends and they helped get me out of the very worst of it. Things were still bad, but not *as* bad, and gradually they got a little better at a time. And then I came here, and there were more people to help. I still didn't feel like I could safely impress without hurting a dragon, but over the last 8 months I've gotten to the point where I think I've worked through my issues."
Nodding her head, Kinara continued with her reply saying "You're right Ma'am, those situations would be big triggers, and goldflights have been for me in the past. I've been through a few goldflights since the attacks, and while the first ones were bad they haven't all been. I know experiencing a goldflight is nothing like the Flight or Chase of your own dragon, but I wont know exactly what that's like unless I do happen to impress. All I've tried to do is prepare myself as well as I can and try to work through my issues so that should I impress I wouldn't panic and send my dragon between. That's been a big concern every time I've thought about impressing since after that first attack...and that's the last thing I'd ever want to do. And even now that the Mindhealer has cleared me, if I didn't think myself that I could handle my issues enough for when my possible dragon Flies to not hurt them I'd not have come to you asking to be a candidate; I'd have let myself turn 23 and be over the age for a candidate without ever thinking of being a candidate."
Her flits, feeling the turmoil of her emotions as she was deeply honest with the WW, sent their person reassuring thoughts as Alyss buried her small head in Kinara's hair to get closer, as if being even closer than just sitting on Kinara's shoulder would help the green reassure her person. Kinara reached up and stroked a hand down Alyss' back to calm her, while the brown just kept his same steady and stoic pose. As she touched the green's back a thought crossed her mind and Kinara's head came up again and she added "I know it's not nearly the feelings a dragon of mine would give me, but I have been through one of my green's Flights and I handled it well- without panicking or even nightmares after."

"Ha! That's assuming that I'd let them take me alive." Kyn'dras declared, wagging his eyebrows at her playfully. "I'll make a run for it - on foot if Padakth won't join me. Dyrina had been about make her own escape, having decided that she'd gotten all she was going to get from the tight-lipped young bronzerider, but there was really only one response she could give to the AHW's request. "Of course, AHW Larissa." She replied sweetly.
So instead of departing for green gossip pastures, she fixed herself more klah from the fresh pot and turned her smile on T'ryn. "Apparently I'm at your service, T'ryn of bronze Myholth. Can I get you anything?"

Palysso blinked. "Err...you did?" He asked blankly. He thought back to the conversation he'd had with his mother's maid. Now that she mentioned it, he did remember her saying something about an argument. Of course, he'd already started panicking and stopped listening by then. "You're really alright? You don't need a healer?" He asked quietly, just to confirm. His mother had been bed-ridden the last time he and Sarati had visited the Hold. A little extra concern was not unwarranted.

When C'id heard the announcement about crafters showing off their skills at the next gather he felt a small fire burning in him. It was just what he needed to kick himself out of the funk that he had been in.. A project as it were...But what could he do to prove his skill at smithing. It couldn't be just something ordinary , oh no! His mind was already at work.. of course it had to wait after all he was still a rider and his dragon always came first but as soon as he was able he entered the smithy and went straight towards the spot he claimed as his and began to figure out what to do. He had to let the metal speak to him so it was important to choose the right one!

{{I chase.}} Beringath announced as he brought his head up sharply, startling Zasaiya into dropped leather straps that she'd been about throw over his shoulders.
"What? Now?" Zasaiya asked, incredulously. Beringath merely gave her a look. "Oh, alright. If you're chasing, chasing. Go on now. Have fun." She sighed. It wasn't often that her blue elected to chase and she'd never understood what prompted him to choose one way or the other. She did, however, know that the only thing to do now is to go along for ride. She patted the large blue's shoulder in encouragement and watched as he dropped off the ledge and into a glide. Then, she turned to make her way to the flight room.

Fioxth liked it a lot at Arolos. Plenty of lovely lady greens, no one around to upset his too much. Yes perfect and when he heard the call of the green he couldn't resist. He did vaguely recogninze her from somewhere but that wasn't important he blooded a herdbeast beside her ((Fly fast and far lovely!)) he said. W'ufl felt the familiar feelings of lust soar in his body as he made his way to the flight rooms even with it he did notcie the green they were chasing was ridden by a male! It wasn't tha the didn't like males as much as females he just never admitted it and worse he felt like he knew the guy!

J'mich had an idea - sort of - for what he wanted to do for this... Crafter... show... thingie. Unfortunately, he didn't have a complete idea, or more accurately he needed to know what sort of thing the *Weyrwoman* wanted.
Which is why the greenrider found himself outside the Weyrwoman's office, trying not to look like some kind of psycho murderer to the guards. "Er, is the Weyrwoman available?" he asked one of them. Ever the gentleman, Tamalak went to get a chair from the corner at Kassia's direction. Margana and Karla sat; Margana holding the envelope her transfer papers were in. Unconsciously her hands were rolling them up, straightening them, and generally fiddling with them. Realizing that she would, in the end, ruin them, she handed them to Kassia. "I believe I need to give these to you?" she said, glancing nervously at the bronze where sitting by the Weyrwoman's desk. She was horrified to see Tamalak inching his way closer to the wher - a fascinated look on his face. "Tam!" she hissed. Realizing where she was, she turned back to Kassia. "My apologies, Weyrwoman. He seems to have an affinity for dragonkine. _All_ dragonkind."

When the other didn't move away or move closer, Kinara took a couple of breaths to relax herself as she listened to Yaranna's instructions. As Kinara relaxed while still keeping all but her hands still, she nodded at the other's instructions and replied with "Cutting away, I remember that cause it just makes the most sense." Kinara fumbled a little as the tuber was repositioned, but quickly got it in the position it was being moved to. Pushing with her thumb, which was not how Kinara had been doing it before, Kinara gave a small shake of her head as she said "That just feels odd, pushing with my thumb like that." Kinara was focusing on the tuber in her hands in order to not think about the closeness of another person, and the surprising closeness of Yaranna behind her was gradually not feeling so sudden and she was more able to relax.

Re: Just Missed Eggs, But Trying Still {{Attn: Do'zer, Kinara))

Giving a small shake of her head as Do'zer's first words, when he was finished Kinara replied with "Oh, you aren't being indelicate at all, Sir. It's a fair question. It's not like I'm a younger girl trying to become a candidate who doesn't have a child. Yes, she actually made it out of Fort before I did, and we met up here once I managed to be able to leave Fort. It was a very bad time, that is true, but she was cared for when we were separated and has since then been sufficiently reassured that a separation like that wouldn't happen again."
Pausing to consider his other worry about time management, Kinara nodded her head saying "Yes Sir, I believe I can. I don't have a craft to take up my time, only Melody, my daughter, who has another person in her life besides me who can care for her. She'll miss me, of course, during the possible weyrling separation that I know is necessary should I be lucky enough to impress, but she'll do ok until I can see her on breaks and rest days- she's got other family around her."
After another pause, Kinara said with a softer and more sincere tone "Ultimately I'm not just wanting to be a candidate for me or my possible future dragon, but also for her. To show her when she gets older not to give up on what she wants, even if the path to her goal is hard to follow and filled with sudden pitfalls."

Khezhar's eyes took in everything as he was guided through the Weyr towards Kassia's office. He had heard tales of Arolos and some of the things that had happened here. Quite the checkered past, even by his standards. Eventually they made their way to the Weyrwoman's office. His gaze darted for a split second to the Wher on guard. It only took that second for him to asses how well trained, and how dangerous, the creature was. An expression that showed equal parts of admiration and envy passed across his face before he took his seat. "Thank you Ma'am. It is very kind of you to receive me on such short notice. I'll not waste your time then. You expressed an interest in sponsoring craftsmen who had ideas that might help the operations of the Weyr. I've brought a couple of ideas I had to see if you would be interested."

(PROJECT) Ideas, Anyone? Attn Trainee/Candidate Kitcheneers
Laura Walker
Yaranna had quite naturally landed in the role of looking after the newer and younger members of the kitchens. While, at 23, she wasn't all that much older than them she'd had a childhood of helping with younger siblings that left her comfortable with them. She liked overseeing the time they spent in the small experimental kitchen off the main kitchens too. It was stocked with a good supply of all staples, and then, in addition, whatever needed using before it went off. At this time of the turn that was frequently soft fruit - it arrived by the wagonload and didn't last long in the heat. A few hours a week, and as much of their own free time as they wanted could be spent playing around in there creating new recipes which were frequently disasterous but occasionally wonderful.-- Blackadder: I mean, what about the people that do all the work? Baldrick: The servants. Blackadder: No, me; *I'm* the people who do all the work.
